In fact many refuse to install them.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason\u00a0is a fear of inverter failure. The reasoning goes something like this:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a solar system component is going to fail early &#8211; it will usually be the inverter.<\/li>\n<li>One thing that causes inverters to fail prematurely is heat, so your inverter should always be in a shaded position, ideally a cool garage.<\/li>\n<li>Microinverters sit under the solar panels where they can get extremely hot, over 80\u00b0C in summer in Australia.<\/li>\n<li>There is usually 1 microinverter per panel.<\/li>\n<li>For a 5kW system that is 20 microinverters sitting on a roof waiting to fail.<\/li>\n<li>If a microinverter fails, you need to get on the roof and remove the solar panel to fix it.<\/li>\n<li>If only 1 microinverter fails on an installation, the cost of replacing it can wipe out the profit on the system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To reinforce this fear, back in 2012 a lot of microinverters were failing (mostly cheap Chinese ones) and some installers were put off them for good.<\/p>\n<p>So why does anyone install microinverters at all. And why do I have 24 of them on my roof?<\/p>\n<p>All new technology has teething problems. Microinverters are no exception. But\u00a0in the last 2 years, microinverters have actually become very reliable. But even the cheaper Chinese brands like APS have worked really hard over the last 2 years to make their inverters more reliable. APS have told me that\u00a0their failure rates are down to 0.77% in the last 24 months from thousands of Aussie installations.<\/p>\n<p>The way I see it is this.\u00a0We&#8217;re in the is the 21st Century. If we can land a spacecraft on a comet, we can certainly make power electronics that can cope with extreme heat. There are millions of microinverters out in the field already. Most of them are reporting their temperature and output every few seconds back to the manufacturer via the web. This feedback loop has already enabled manufacturers to quickly\u00a0identify the weakest links in their designs. \u00a0They are continuously improving the reliability and have made great leaps in only a few years. In fact I\u00a0expect good microinverters to now outlast central inverters. The manufacturers believe this too, putting their money where their mouth is. \u00a0Twenty five year warranties have become\u00a0standard for most microinverters compared to 5-10 year warranties on a typical central inverter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting back to Sunpower<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week the manufacturer of the world&#8217;s highest efficiency solar panels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/sunpower-review.html\">Sunpower<\/a>, acquired\u00a0the manufacturer of one of the world&#8217;s best microinverters, <a href=\"http:\/\/solarbridgetech.com\/\">Solarbridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This has to be a huge vote of confidence in microinverters from arguably the world&#8217;s best solar panel manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>Sunpower panels are the world&#8217;s most efficient at 20.4% panel efficiency. From what I&#8217;ve seen you can expect them to produce about 8% more power per rated Watt than other brands.<\/p>\n<p>If you stick a microinverter on the back of one of these panels, then on an unshaded roof, you can expect to get a further 8% power increase because of the panel-level optimisation.<\/p>\n<p>So a solar system made of Sunpower + Solarbridge should give you a 16.6% power advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty impressive!<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0will everyone be rushing out to buy a Sunpower + Solarbridge system now?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately not!<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because Sunpower make the most expensive panels in the world, and Solarbridge make the most expensive inverters! So if you want the Ferrari performance, expect to pay for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/how-important-is-efficiency-when-choosing-a-solar-panel\/\">As I have written\u00a0before<\/a>, buying the most efficient solar system on the market is not necessarily the best option, as the extra energy produced may not compensate for the extra ticket price. For example you could easily pay 30-40% more for one of these systems compared to a regular &#8220;Tier 1&#8221; DC solar system.<\/p>\n<p>But if you have limited roof space, want a system with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/your-solar-panel-warranty-what-you-need-to-know\/\">proper 25 year warranty<\/a>\u00a0on every major component or simply want to own the best, the Sunpower Solarbridge option is definitely worth considering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of Aussie solar installers really dislike microinverters.
