{"id":44655,"date":"2020-11-16T12:01:24","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T01:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=44655"},"modified":"2024-10-01T14:43:19","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T05:13:19","slug":"tesla-powerwall-price-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-powerwall-price-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Tesla Increases Powerwall Price $800 After Announcing They&#8217;ll Halve Battery Prices By 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div id=\"attachment_44857\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44857\" class=\"wp-image-44857 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwall-bollards.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Powerwall price increase\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwall-bollards.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwall-bollards-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwall-bollards-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwall-bollards-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Despite promising to reduce energy storage costs, Tesla keeps increasing the price of its Powerwall home battery.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>On September the 23rd I woke up at 5:00 am to listen to Elon Musk&#8217;s Battery Day announcement where the world was told Tesla would cut the cost of batteries in half by 2025.\u00a0 We were told they would:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Lower the cost of battery cells.<\/li>\r\n<li>Lower the cost of battery factories.<\/li>\r\n<li>Reduce the cost of raw materials required.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>So I am feeling miffed that instead of lowering the cost of Powerwall 2 Tesla has instead increased its price by $800.\u00a0 This is a 7% increase and more than the $650 price cut they gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-powerwall-price-drop\/\">in July last year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s the price of a new Powerwall according to Tesla&#8217;s Australian site at the moment:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44732 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallnewprice.jpg\" alt=\"Powerwall pricing in Australia - November 2020\" width=\"665\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallnewprice.jpg 665w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallnewprice-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 665px) 100vw, 665px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>That&#8217;s not exactly how they present it.\u00a0 I added the red oval and Comic Sans type saying &#8220;New Price&#8221; myself.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s the price they used to have:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_price_cut.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Powerwall old price\" width=\"635\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_price_cut.jpg 635w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_price_cut-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Again, I added the stuff in red.\u00a0 Tesla never had a graphic up stating &#8220;Old Price&#8221; in Comic Sans.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>It seems to me that if Tesla is rapidly driving down the cost of batteries then they should be decreasing the cost of the Powerwall, not pushing it up.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Powerwall Price: Ups &amp; Downs But Mostly Ups<\/h2>\r\n<p>This graph<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-powerwall-price-increase\/#en-44655-1' id='enref-44655-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44655)'>1<\/a><\/sup> show how the Tesla Powerwall 2, despite existing in a world of rapidly declining battery costs, increased its price by 36% since its launch.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s after adjusting for inflation:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44797 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_price_graph.jpg\" alt=\"Powerwall price trends\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_price_graph.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_price_graph-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_price_graph-768x461.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The first figure is a little iffy, as Tesla didn&#8217;t give the price without installation; but if we use the same $1,000 price for &#8220;supporting hardware&#8221; they used a year later then its price was $9,000.\u00a0 Even after allowing for a little leeway on the first price it is clear the Powerwall 2 has done almost nothing but increase in price.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why Tesla increased the price so much, but I suspect it&#8217;s because the company found making home batteries is very difficult.\u00a0 The Canberra Battery Test Centre&#8217;s 7th report showed that, of the 18 batteries they had tested, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/battery-test-7th-report\/\">83% of were faulty<\/a> in some way.\u00a0 Faults ranged from requiring repairs or replacement to complete and utter failure to work from day one with no replacement or refund because the company went bust.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Battery Included But Not Installation<\/h2>\r\n<p>The now $12,500 price only covers the cost of the Powerwall and its gateway box and cabling that Tesla calls &#8220;supporting hardware&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_44749\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44749\" class=\"wp-image-44749 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_and_minime.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"326\" data-pin-title=\"Powerwall and gateway box\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_and_minime.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_and_minime-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Powerwall_and_minime-768x250.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of these images shows the Powerwall 2 and its gateway box. In a real installation, there will be cables between the two and they won&#8217;t look as neat.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Installation can easily add over $4,000 to the cost of a Powerwall, with the exact amount depending on how much work your existing switchboard and wiring requires.\u00a0 I know there are people who have been charged much less than that, but I&#8217;m not sure the installers doing rock bottom installations have a viable business model.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/consumers\/consumer-rights-guarantees\/consumer-guarantees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/a>, those selling and installing Powerwalls will be responsible for providing a repair, replacement, or refund for any that fail during their 10 year warranty period and potentially beyond that.\u00a0 If Tesla goes bust, or simply become uncooperative, installers could be on the hook for a hell of a lot.\u00a0 If in five years time President Musk goes mad from too much wacky weed, barricades himself in the White House, and then uses the internet to turn all Powerwalls into bricks &#8212; installers who sold the Powerwalls will be on the hook for a repair, replacement, or refund.\u00a0 This applies no matter what happens to Tesla.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_44752\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44752\" class=\"wp-image-44752 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/wackyweed.gif\" alt=\"President Elon Musk\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Nah&#8230;\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t do that.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Lower Tesla Battery Costs Don&#8217;t Apply For Powerwall<\/h2>\r\n<p>One thing I can definitely tell you about Elon Musk is the man has balls of steel.<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of them being thrown at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-cybertruck-reveal\/\">cybertruck<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44754\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cybertruck_oops.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"272\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>But &#8212; besides owning many actual, physical balls of steel &#8212; Elon is also ballsy in another way. \u00a0Just seven weeks ago he hyped a huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/elon-musk-battery-day-tesla\/\">Battery Day announcement<\/a> and stated to the world that Tesla would halve the cost of batteries over the next 5 years &#8211; and then in October raised the price of Tesla Powerwalls.\u00a0 Now that&#8217;s some chutzpah.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re wondering what chutzpah means its definition is killing your parents and then pleading for mercy because you&#8217;re an orphan.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In case you missed the Battery Day shindig, here&#8217;s a shot of Elon Musk and Drew Baglino, Tesla&#8217;s Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering, in front of a image showing how they plan to get a 56% reduction in battery pack costs:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_44777\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44777\" class=\"wp-image-44777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_batteryreductionlabled.jpg\" alt=\"Elon Musk and Drew Baglino\" width=\"1000\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_batteryreductionlabled.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_batteryreductionlabled-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/tesla_batteryreductionlabled-768x376.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;It&#8217;s agreed then&#8230; On Libertarian Mars, cars drive you!&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Again, I am responsible for adding the red Comic Sans giving the names of the areas they intend to lower costs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If you are thinking maybe they just happened to flash the wrong image up behind them, here&#8217;s a direct quote of what they said&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>DREW BAGLINO:\u00a0 In addition to the improvements we&#8217;ve just said on enabling additional range and improving the structural performance of the vehicle, it is worth another 7% dollar per kilowatt-hour reduction at the battery pack level, bringing our total reductions now to 56%, dollars per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>ELON MUSK:\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if they had Baglino say that to give Musk some kind of wiggle room if they fail to meet their stated goals, but Elon&#8217;s response wasn&#8217;t&#8230;.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>ELON MUSK:\u00a0 That&#8217;s utter bullshit, Drew.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>And he didn&#8217;t even say something sarcastic like&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>ELON MUSK:\u00a0 Yeah, sure we&#8217;ll cut battery prices by that much.\u00a0 Right after we finish our aerial pig project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Instead he, the CEO of Tesla, agreed with him at a presentation focused on how they are going to cut battery pack prices. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying that promising to massively cut battery prices and then immediately raising them with a Powerwall price hike is evil.\u00a0 After all, Elon Musk is a great guy.\u00a0 When I was six <a href=\"https:\/\/onegianthand.com\/post\/631501435875524608\/brain-implant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he pulled me from a burning car<\/a> seconds before it exploded.\u00a0 I trust him with my life.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But I do think it is bad business.\u00a0 You&#8217;re not likely to convince investors you&#8217;re about to slash the cost of your batteries if your first move after your big Battery Day announcement about it is to jack their price up.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also not going to convince competitors in China and elsewhere they shouldn&#8217;t try to compete with Tesla in the home battery market because it makes it clear the Tesla talk doesn&#8217;t match the Tesla walk.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Under 3 Years For $800 Powerwall Battery Pack Cost Decrease<\/h2>\r\n<p>At the Battery Day presentation Musk and Bagalino were referring to electric car battery packs, but nearly all their cost cutting measures should apply to Powerwall packs and so their cost should also decline by around half. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If we believe Tesla will lower the price of Powerwall battery packs by almost half over 5 years then they will have to manage an average reduction of 12% per year<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-powerwall-price-increase\/#en-44655-2' id='enref-44655-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44655)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 If it currently costs them $200 Australian per kilowatt-hour to make a Powerwall battery pack, as it&#8217;s 14 kilowatt-hours in total, it would cost them $2,800.\u00a0 So after one year the cost of the battery pack should be reduced by $336.\u00a0 After 3 years it would be $892 less.\u00a0 So it would take them less than 3 years of battery cost reductions for the savings to exceed the recent $800 price hike.\u00a0 Since Tesla would also be lowering the cost of the electronics and other components, the time required for an $800 decrease in Powerwall 2 production cost is likely to be much less. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>It Was A Sneaky Price Increase<\/h2>\r\n<p>I mentioned the Powerwall price increase occurred in October but I&#8217;m only writing about it now in November.\u00a0 This is because Tesla was charging more but didn&#8217;t increase the price on their site.\u00a0 This was a bastard move by Tesla that stunk to high heaven and I&#8217;d much prefer it if Tesla kept their stinky, high, bastards away from us.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_44790\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44790\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/remark.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"296\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Hey&#8230; I resemble that remark.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Their perfidy required installers to explain to customers that Tesla had increased the price while Tesla was still showing the old price on their site.\u00a0 It seemed that Tesla was willing to let installers take the blame for the increase.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not happy about Tesla increasing the Powerwall price, but if they want to do that it&#8217;s their business &#8212; quite literally.\u00a0 But this sort of behaviour makes me so angry I could just about suffer a thermal runaway and vent with flame &#8212; as they say in the battery business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Li-ion 18650 Cells in Thermal Runaway\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/24fYrV2vCPk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\r\n<h2>US Price Also Up<\/h2>\r\n<p>One good thing I&#8217;ll say about Tesla is they have never screwed us over by charging more in Australia for their products than they do overseas.\u00a0 This is the price currently up on the US Tesla site:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallus.jpg\" alt=\"US Tesla Powerwall price - November 2020\" width=\"650\" height=\"796\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallus.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/powerwallus-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>With our 10% GST the US Powerwall price comes to $12,356 Australian dollars.\u00a0 While that is $144 less than what Tesla charges here it&#8217;s only a 1% difference and I&#8217;m willing to let it slide.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>A strange thing I noticed about the US Tesla site is that if you tell it your electricity bill in New York is $81 US a month it recommends you get two Powerwalls.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty bizarre because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/regions\/new-york-new-jersey\/news-release\/2018\/averageenergyprices_newyorkarea_20180613.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electricity in New York<\/a> costs about around the Australian average.\u00a0 So by Tesla US standards the typical Australian home should have multiple Powerwalls.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not something I recommend unless you think Elon Musk should have all the money.<\/p>\r\n<h2>A Fair Market Price?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Most companies don&#8217;t charge what they consider to be a fair price for their products.\u00a0 They charge what they think they can get away with.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-2-review.html\">Powerwall<\/a> 2 seems to be a pretty good product.\u00a0 So if people are still willing to shell out for them despite the price increase, then they will be voting for the Powerwall with their wallets and Tesla will be rewarded for making a battery system that works well with extra money. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But all human beings respond to incentives and Australians do as well.\u00a0 With the price increase Tesla will sell fewer Powerwalls than they would have otherwise and people will buy more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">battery systems<\/a> made in China, South Korea, and other countries that aren&#8217;t the United States of Tesla.\u00a0 To me it seems clear Tesla is either unwilling or unable to dominate the home battery market and are positioning themselves as a provider of premium battery systems.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with a company doing this, but it doesn&#8217;t live up to the Tesla hype.<\/p>\r\n<p>But then if Elon Musk lived up to his hype, right now we&#8217;d probably all be smoking dope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G2NcxGkT5zQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">on the moon<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September the 23rd I woke up at 5:00 am to listen to Elon Musk&#8217;s Battery Day announcement where the world was told Tesla would cut the cost of batteries in half by 2025.\u00a0 We were told they would: Lower the cost of battery cells.
