Low Interest Rates Can Make That Happen."},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47371 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission-lines.jpg\" alt=\"Renewable energy and long distance electricity transmission\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission-lines.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission-lines-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission-lines-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission-lines-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Long-distance transmission sends electrical energy from where it&#8217;s generated to where it&#8217;s used.\u00a0 If we had more of it, electricity prices would be lower, and the integration of solar and wind farms would be easier.\u00a0 Thanks to record low-interest rates, more of it is exactly what we&#8217;re going to get. \u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Not only will transmission capacity be increased between the five, already gridded together, eastern states &#8212; we may even get an undersea transmission cable linking the Northern Territory to Indonesia and Singapore.\u00a0 Most bizarre of all, the eastern states may be connected to the far distant land of Western Australia where they drink swan flavoured beer, and the sun hangs around in the sky for an average of two hours and 20 minutes after it has set in Sydney.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Existing Electricity Transmission<\/h2>\r\n<p>Large generators &#8212; whether solar farms, wind farms or pollution-spewing coal power stations\u00a0 &#8212; all have a location problem.\u00a0 Unlike rooftop solar, they&#8217;re not located where their power is used.\u00a0 The solution used is long aluminium cables to send the electricity where it&#8217;s required.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The 5 eastern states are already interconnected to varying degrees.\u00a0 This happened on the Pacific side due to the higher population density that has resulted from these states being habitable.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying the Northern Territory and Western Australia aren&#8217;t habitable by humans, but I will say they&#8217;re not habitable by the Dutch.\u00a0 Not the sane ones, at least.\u00a0 Not unless there&#8217;s air conditioning.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Because the populated parts of the NT and WA are surrounded by inhospitable oceans of desert and\/or channel country, they have their own separate grids; one main one and two or three itty bitty ones.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a very different situation from the Eastern States where sunshine falling on an Adelaide roof can contribute to keeping Townsville refrigerators running.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s a map with a key that&#8217;s almost impossible to read, showing Australia&#8217;s existing high voltage transmission lines:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47299 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission_map.jpg\" alt=\"Australia's existing high voltage electricity transmission lines\" width=\"1085\" height=\"959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission_map.jpg 1085w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission_map-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission_map-1024x905.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/transmission_map-768x679.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1085px) 100vw, 1085px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Interstate Electricity Transmission Is Relatively New<\/h2>\r\n<p>Australia&#8217;s first interstate transmission<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/renewables-long-distance-transmission\/#en-44921-1' id='enref-44921-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44921)'>1<\/a><\/sup> came about as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowyhydro.com.au\/generation\/the-snowy-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snowy River Scheme<\/a> that linked New South Wales and Victoria.\u00a0 But this providing clear evidence states could swap electricity without catching cooties, it was well over a decade before any other state tried it.\u00a0 Despite the electric connection they could easily have had, states were very reluctant to hook up.\u00a0 I know this sounds odd in these internet-connected days. Still, you have to remember, this is a country that decided every state should be free to express its individuality by picking whichever railway gauge best suited its mood and we ended up with 3 of them.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/renewables-long-distance-transmission\/#en-44921-2' id='enref-44921-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44921)'>2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Australia has traditionally had much less long-distance transmission than would have made sense in retrospect.\u00a0 This is despite the fact there was massive over-investment in grid infrastructure early last decade.\u00a0 This mis-investment was less about long-distance electricity transmission and more about beefing up grids to cope with an expected increase in electricity demand that never occurred.\u00a0 Instead, grid consumption slowly declined.\u00a0 Electricity prices shot up to pay for the extra infrastructure, which caused people to use even less electricity.\u00a0 It was pretty stupid. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I think we have learned maybe 3% of what we should have from that experience, so here&#8217;s hoping things go better with the new build-out of long-distance transmission.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Popularisation Of Transmission<\/h2>\r\n<p>Electricity transmission between states didn&#8217;t take off until a group of publicly minded naughty schoolboys formed a band to popularize the idea through music.\u00a0 Their songs included:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nULs4JW3tPI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">It&#8217;s A Long Way To The Top Of A Power Pole<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lo2qQmj0_h4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">You Shook Me All Line Long<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cAk4OAAzZBs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Electric Deeds Done Dirt Cheap<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Admittedly, they didn&#8217;t have any real success until their producer made them change the lyrics, but at least they stopped him from changing the name of their band &#8212; AC\/DC.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Two Types Of Transmission:\u00a0 AC &amp; DC<\/h2>\r\n<p>There are two types of long-distance electricity transmission:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>\u00a0High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC)<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><strong>High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC):<\/strong>\u00a0 The most commonly used electricity transmission method uses alternating current (AC).\u00a0 This involves electrons in a cable all rushing one way and then altering their direction and rush back the way they came.\u00a0 This happens 50 times a second in Australia and most other countries, but in a few places, it&#8217;s 60 times because variety is the spice of electrical equipment incompatibility.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>HVAC\u00a0 has commonly been used ever since Thomas Edison lost the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_currents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war of the currents<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0 A failure that resulted in him dying with nothing but the love of his family and over $200 million in today&#8217;s money.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikola_Tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikola Tesla<\/a>, the genius who won the battle, had to make do with a nice hotel room and the love of a <a href=\"https:\/\/teslauniverse.com\/nikola-tesla\/quotes\/13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pigeon<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC):<\/strong>\u00a0 While <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Edison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Edison<\/a> was on the wrong track when he backed DC current for homes and businesses, developments in High Voltage Direct Current really have nothing to do with what he was on about and doesn&#8217;t vindicate his DC desire in any way what-so-ever.<\/p>\r\n<p>Direct Current (DC) travels in one direction in a loop.\u00a0 By using high voltages, it can allow long-distance transmission with minimal losses.\u00a0 This means it will be used for any extremely long-distance new transmission lines, such as Australia to Singapore or Australia to Australia if we ever connect WA to the Eastern States.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>HVAC versus HVDC<\/strong>:\u00a0 With HVAC transmission the current is synchronized with the grid.\u00a0 This means the electrons all rush back and forth in the same direction at the same time.\u00a0 Because of this, adding additional HVAC transmission to a grid can strengthen it and prevent blackouts by helping keep distant grid regions synchronized.\u00a0 Unfortunately, if something goes wrong at one end of the electricity transmission line, it can potentially cause a blackout at the far end.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>HVDC is unsynchronized.\u00a0 This means it only supplies energy and doesn&#8217;t directly contribute to the system strength of the grid.\u00a0 It also means problems can&#8217;t propagate.\u00a0 This is handy if we build an interconnector to Indonesia and Singapore, as we&#8217;d just piss each other off if problems could leap across the Java and Timor seas.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>How Extra Transmission Lowers Electricity Prices<\/h2>\r\n<p>Long-distance electricity transmission reduces the cost of electricity in four main ways:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Improved market efficiency<\/li>\r\n<li>Increased competition<\/li>\r\n<li>Shared ancillary services<\/li>\r\n<li>Integration of renewable generation<\/li>\r\n<li>Geographic dispersion and time-shifting.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><strong>Market Efficiency:<\/strong>\u00a0 If electricity is cheap in South Australia and expensive in NSW, consumers in the states can only benefit if there is available transmission capacity.\u00a0 More electricity transmission allows more low-cost energy to be sent where it&#8217;s needed most, reducing bottlenecks and lowering prices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Competition:\u00a0 <\/strong>We&#8217;re supposed to be protected from price gouging by competition.\u00a0 But there aren&#8217;t enough electricity providers to prevent a large supplier using their market power to drive prices higher than they would otherwise be.\u00a0 More transmission allows more suppliers to contribute, increasing competition. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Ancillary Services:<\/strong>\u00a0 These support the electricity grid in a range of ways to keep it stable and prevent blackouts.\u00a0 Improved transmission can allow different regions to share some of these ancillary services and reduce their total cost.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Integrating Renewables: <\/strong>Wind and solar farms are relatively inexpensive to build these days &#8212; provided there&#8217;s existing transmission capacity available for them to use.\u00a0 More transmission allows more large scale renewable energy be integrated into the grid and supply most of the energy they generate, instead of being forced to curtail output when electricity transmission capacity is congested.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>More renewable capacity helps keep electricity prices low, as wind and solar power have no fuel cost.\u00a0 While constructing solar and wind farms costs money, once they&#8217;re completed their operating costs are minimal compared to gas and coal power.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Geographic Dispersal<\/strong><strong>: \u00a0<\/strong> Imagine flat.\u00a0 Double it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s most of Australia.\u00a0 Being the least lumpy continent<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/renewables-long-distance-transmission\/#en-44921-3' id='enref-44921-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44921)'>3<\/a><\/sup> results in a lot of correlation between wind speeds in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania.\u00a0 But in northern Queensland, the wind does its own thing and can be blowing hard while there&#8217;s hardly a breeze in the rest of the country.\u00a0 It&#8217;s similar with solar; Some regions can be overcast while others have blazing sunshine.\u00a0 This geographical dispersion of variable renewable capacity allows for a more constant and reliable supply of energy from wind and solar power and is dependent on adequate electricity transmission capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Time Shifting:\u00a0 <\/strong>This usually refers to peak demand occurring at different times, which allows additional transmission to reduce the cost of meeting demand during peaks.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m also going to use it to refer to the fact the sun rises and sets at different times depending on where you are in the country.\u00a0 While it varies according to the season, on average, the sun in Perth sets around 2 hours and 20 minutes after it sets in Sydney.\u00a0 This means an electricity transmission line to WA could send solar power east for hours after the sunset in the nation&#8217;s largest city.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Low-Interest Rates = Much Cheaper Transmission<\/h2>\r\n<p>Long-distance transmission isn&#8217;t cheap to build, but it&#8217;s cheap to maintain and can be used for a very long time because it has no moving parts.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xcelenergy.com\/staticfiles\/xe\/Corporate\/Corporate%20PDFs\/OverheadVsUnderground_FactSheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One claim<\/a> says it can last 40+ years underground and 80+ years when strung overhead from transmission towers.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_47363\" style=\"width: 930px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47363\" class=\"wp-image-47363 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/electranet_transmission.jpg\" alt=\"Transmission towers - structures and voltages\" width=\"920\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/electranet_transmission.jpg 920w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/electranet_transmission-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/electranet_transmission-768x353.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transmission towers.\u00a0 (Image Source:\u00a0 Electranet, who got it from South Australian transmission structures and voltages.)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>This means the main costs of long-distance transmission are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The cost of actually building it.<\/li>\r\n<li>The cost of capital.\u00a0 Either the cost of interest payments on money borrowed or &#8212; if you just happen to have a couple of billion dollars lying around &#8212; what you could have made from an alternative investment.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Less than a decade ago, the cost of capital was the largest part.\u00a0 But now, with interest rates at around zero, this cost has mostly disappeared.\u00a0 You may complain that no one&#8217;s letting you pay zero percent interest on your home loan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theceomagazine.com\/business\/finance\/interest-rate-fixed-zero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as in Denmark<\/a>, but if you are breaking ground on a giant, government-backed, billion-dollar infrastructure project in Australia, the interest you&#8217;ll have to pay is next to nothing at the moment.\u00a0 This has massively decreased the cost of building electricity transmission capacity, as the graph below suggests:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47326 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/interest_rates.jpg\" alt=\"Interest rates - amount owed\" width=\"958\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/interest_rates.jpg 958w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/interest_rates-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/interest_rates-768x453.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 958px) 100vw, 958px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>I used a period of 20 years in the graph above simply because it&#8217;s a length of time people can wrap their heads around.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not how transmission projects are paid for.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t just borrow money for 20 years and pay it back as a lump sum.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little more complicated than that.\u00a0 But the graph does show how falling interest rates can massively reduce the cost of a project.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>When it comes to building the infrastructure we need to shift away from fossil fuels, whether it&#8217;s long-distance electricity transmission, solar and wind farms, energy storage, or factories that spit out electric cars &#8212; the cost of building these things has never been cheaper.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Return Of High-Interest Rates Unlikely<\/h2>\r\n<p>Interest rates have been trending down for 30 years and are unlikely to return to high levels any time soon.\u00a0 There may be a temporary increase after COVID-19 is defeated, but I&#8217;m sure low rates will be around long term.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_47350\" style=\"width: 766px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47350\" class=\"wp-image-47350 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/oz_interest_rates.jpg\" alt=\"Australian interest rates\" width=\"756\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/oz_interest_rates.jpg 756w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/oz_interest_rates-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has a cash rate that is now 0.1%. This is the rate at which they&#8217;ll lend money to large, trusted, financial institutions. The government bond rate has actually gone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/government-interest-rate-goes-negative-in-550m-treasury-note-sale-20201210-p56maq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slightly negative<\/a>.\u00a0 (Image Source:\u00a0 ABC News.)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Electricity Transmission Projects<\/h2>\r\n<p>A lot of new transmission capacity is going to be built within states.\u00a0 One example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-09-30\/electranet-upgrade-to-eyre-peninsula-gets-green-light\/12719048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eyre Peninsula electricity line upgrade<\/a> in South Australia, which will use transmission towers stronger than those that got bent to the ground in a storm 5 years ago.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_47329\" style=\"width: 872px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47329\" class=\"wp-image-47329 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windpower.jpg\" alt=\"Electricity transmission tower damage\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windpower.jpg 862w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windpower-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windpower-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some politicians blamed the blackout that resulted from this on renewable energy. Personally, I&#8217;m more inclined to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/australian-politicians-confuse-wind-power-powerful-winds\/\">blame powerful winds than wind power&#8230;<\/a> (Image Source: ABC News and they credit Tom Fedorowytsch.)<cite class=\"_21SmZ _3_Aqg _1hGzz _1-RZJ P8HGV _16dJg\" data-component=\"Figure__cite\"><\/cite><\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Rather than give details of smaller projects that only cost hundreds of millions of dollars, I&#8217;ll just mention the inter-state and international ones that cost billions.\u00a0 Below, are a list of projects at various points of their planning process.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve put them in rough order of how likely they are to go ahead:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Victoria to NSW Interconnector West (VNI West)<\/li>\r\n<li>Project Energy Connect Between South Australia and NSW<\/li>\r\n<li>Project Marinus Interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria<\/li>\r\n<li>The Australian-ASEAN Power Link (AAPL) by Sun Cable from the Northern Territory to Indonesia and Singapore<\/li>\r\n<li>Western Australia To South Australia<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Victoria To NSW Interconnector West<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Victoria to NSW Interconnector West, or VNI West to its friends, is expected to provide an additional 1.8 gigawatts or so of transmission capacity between the two states.\u00a0 While the exact plan isn&#8217;t finalized, the estimated cost will range from $1.3 to $1.9 billion, and it may be finished by 2027.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_47333\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47333\" class=\"wp-image-47333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/vni_west.jpg\" alt=\"Victoria To NSW Interconnector West - VNI West\" width=\"1000\" height=\"622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/vni_west.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/vni_west-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/vni_west-768x478.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proposed new VNI West transmission corridors.\u00a0 One of these coloured lines is expected to become an actual transmission line. (Image Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/aemo.com.au\/en\/initiatives\/major-programs\/victoria-to-new-south-wales-interconnector-west-regulatory-investment-test-for-transmission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEMO<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Note that a smaller, 170-megawatt interconnector also planned between the two states is simply called <a href=\"https:\/\/aemo.com.au\/-\/media\/files\/electricity\/nem\/planning_and_forecasting\/victorian_transmission\/2019\/vni-rit-t\/victoria-to-new-south-wales-interconnector-upgrade-rit-t-padr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VNI<\/a>, so it&#8217;s easy to confuse the two.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Project Energy Connect Between SA &amp; NSW<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectenergyconnect.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Energy Connect<\/a> is a plan to build an 875 km transmission line with a capacity of around 800 megawatts between South Australia and NSW.\u00a0 While SA has two interconnectors with Victoria, this will be the first with NSW.\u00a0 It&#8217;s expected to be completed in 2023, which is quick for a large project like this.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Projections are it will lower average annual household electricity bills by around $100 in South Australia and $61 in NSW.\u00a0 Because there are four and a half times as many people in NSW, that state will receive the greatest total benefit.\u00a0 At the moment it&#8217;s not clear how many years households will have to wait before they actually see a benefit on their electricity bills.\u00a0 The year 2030 is one date that was thrown around recently.\u00a0 (Funny how this delay wasn&#8217;t mentioned around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/sa-election-energy-policies\/\">election time in SA<\/a>.)<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/energy_connect.png\" alt=\"Project EnergyConnect\" width=\"1108\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/energy_connect.png 1108w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/energy_connect-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/energy_connect-1024x725.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/energy_connect-768x543.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The map above was clearly made by someone with a personal connection to Wagga Wagga.\u00a0 I can tell this because they called it Wagga, which is a social <em>faux<\/em> <em>pas<\/em><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/renewables-long-distance-transmission\/#en-44921-4' id='enref-44921-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44921)'>4<\/a><\/sup> unless you or your relatives live there.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The cost estimate has risen to $2.4 billion, but it still looks almost certain to go ahead &#8212; despite recent <a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/transmission-projects-in-doubt-after-aemc-rejects-financing-rule-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arguments over funding<\/a>. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Project Marinus Interconnector Between Tasmania &amp; Victoria<\/h2>\r\n<p>Tasmania&#8217;s only interconnector with the mainland is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basslink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basslink<\/a>.\u00a0 The folly of having only one was revealed in 2015 when it failed during a drought that lowered hydroelectric output in the Apple Isle.\u00a0 The electricity supply shortfall was so bad it contributed to blackouts in the Philippines.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I know that sounds odd because there&#8217;s no <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manila\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manila<\/a> interconnector yet. It occurred because diesel generators were shipped from there to Tasmania because Tasmanians were willing to pay more to not sit in the dark.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/renewables-long-distance-transmission\/#en-44921-5' id='enref-44921-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(44921)'>5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>The proposed Project Marinus will consist of a 750-megawatt connection by 2028 and a second 750-megawatt interconnector by 2032.\u00a0 This will give Tasmania 4 times its current interstate transmission capability, and 3 separate cables mean that if one fails it won&#8217;t be a serious problem.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>All the interconnectors will be HVDC, allowing Tasmania to remain out of synch with the rest of the nation.\u00a0 This is probably for the best, since I hear they&#8217;re so out of synch Tasmanians will soon start partying like it&#8217;s 1999.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Sun Cable &#8212; Australian-ASEAN Power Link (AAPL)<\/h2>\r\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/suncable.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed project<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/aapl-solar-agreement-mb1859\/\">may go ahead<\/a>, consists of a 3,750 km underwater HVDC transmission line from the Northern Territory to Indonesia and Singapore.\u00a0 The plan includes a 13.1 gigawatt solar farm in the NT with 33 gigawatt-hours of battery storage.\u00a0 This is an ambitious project, but given the Northern Territory has better solar resources than Indonesia and Singapore, as well as enough room to build giant solar farms, then &#8212; thanks to low-interest rates &#8212; it may proceed. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>WA &amp; SA Interconnector\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p>You may think the idea of sending an extension cord across the ocean to Asia seems far fetched. Still, I think the idea of an electricity interconnector between Western and Eastern Australia is even nuttier.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The international interconnector will have hundreds of millions of potential customers, while there are only 2.7 million West Australians.\u00a0 Also, instead of connecting an area of great solar resources to a not-so-great area, this will be connecting great to great.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But despite the problems, some people claim it will easily pay for itself.\u00a0 Provided they can convince enough other people they&#8217;re not nuttier than a lumpy chocolate bar; then we will eventually electrically connect all Australian states.\u00a0 Just don&#8217;t be surprised if it doesn&#8217;t happen until after we&#8217;ve plugged Japan into the end of a giant extension cord. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Alternatives To Transmission<\/h2>\r\n<p>So far I&#8217;ve written as though more long-distance transmission capacity is always a good idea. But it is possible to have too much of a good thing and there is the risk a long-distance transmission project\u00a0 to never provide enough benefit to be worthwhile.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Because a long-distance electricity transmission project is a long term undertaking that may require decades to pay for itself, it is possible changing conditions and improving technology could convert what looks like a sound investment now into an albino elephant that never manages to pay for itself.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>While large-scale renewables and long-distance transmission currently look like inseparable buddies, if the cost of solar and\/or wind farms falls far enough, it will start making sense to build less transmission capacity and start overbuilding renewable capacity.\u00a0 But a more serious threat is if the cost of batteries falls to a very low level.\u00a0 Energy storage done dirt cheap will greatly reduce the economic return from long-distance transmission.<\/p>\r\n<h2>A More Interconnectored World<\/h2>\r\n<p>Thanks to low-interest rates and the variable nature of wind and solar energy generation, we&#8217;re going to see a lot of long-distance transmission capacity construction around the world over the next 10 years.\u00a0 How long this boom in electricity transmission capacity continues will depend on interest rates and the cost of energy storage.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If batteries fail to fall much further in price, we may see a world where long-distance transmission has fat cables able to provide plenty of power, allowing cheap solar electricity to light up locations where the sun has set.\u00a0 A world of extremely cheap battery storage may still have a lot of long-distance electricity transmission, but the cables won&#8217;t be able to provide as much power as they&#8217;ll have days to redress energy imbalances between regions thanks to copious battery storage.<\/p>\r\n<p>Personally, I&#8217;m hoping we&#8217;ll see a lot of new long-distance transmission built in the short term, as that will help us more rapidly move away from coal and gas.\u00a0 If falling costs of battery storage then render it uneconomic, I&#8217;d still count that as a win. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I also hope that a world where electricity interconnectors between countries are common will be a place where people feel more connected with each other.\u00a0 At some level, we all want to connect, and for me, it&#8217;s at the level of massive electrical cabling.\u00a0 I hope countries relying on each other for electricity will help us see past our petty differences, encourage us to cast aside our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zcUs5X9glCc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intolerance<\/a>, and see we&#8217;re not that different from each other.\u00a0 We&#8217;re just one big human family &#8212; and the Dutch.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long-distance transmission sends electrical energy from where it&#8217;s generated to where it&#8217;s used.\u00a0 If we had more of it, electricity prices would be lower, and the integration of solar and wind farms would be easier.\u00a0 Thanks to record low-interest rates, more of it is exactly what we&#8217;re going to get. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":47371,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[54],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-44921","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-solar-policy","entry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.2 (Yoast SEO v27.2) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Long Distance Electricity Transmission Boom Thanks To Low Interest Rates<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"More electricity transmission = lower electricity prices + more wind and solar farms.
