{"id":48644,"date":"2021-04-12T12:25:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T01:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=48644"},"modified":"2021-04-12T12:40:52","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T02:10:52","slug":"solar-export-limiting-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Export Limiting: Just How Much Energy Will You Lose?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_49273\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49273\" class=\"wp-image-49273 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export-limited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export-limited.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export-limited-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export-limited-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export-limited-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What are the losses from solar export limiting? &#8212; You&#8217;ll lose less energy generation than you think.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Export limited solar systems are becoming increasingly common.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Some new solar power system buyers are being told they can only proceed with an installation if the installer &#8216;export limits&#8217; their system.<\/p>\r\n<p>Export limiting is a polite way of saying &#8216;hobbled&#8217;. \u00a0An export limited solar system will occasionally send less electricity into the grid than its inverter can supply.\u00a0 That can cause clean solar energy to go to waste.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>That sounds awful, but the good news is: the amount lost is far less than most people expect.<\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>If you were planning to install a 10 kilowatt solar system but were told the inverter had to be exported limited to 5 kilowatts &#8212; you might cry&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WWaLxFIVX1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nooooooooooooo!<\/a>\u00a0 Five is half of ten, I will lose half the solar generation!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>But that&#8217;s not how it works.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I have used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pvwatts.nrel.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PVWatts<\/a> to investigate the likely output of export limited solar systems in every Australian capital.\u00a0 I found that &#8212; even in an absolute worst-case situation &#8212; the maximum amount of generation lost by a 10 kilowatt solar power system installation with a 5 kilowatt export limit is 14%.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In reality, the losses are likely to be considerably less.\u00a0 This because the worst-case situation involves&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>All solar panels facing the same direction.<\/li>\r\n<li>No electricity consumption by the household during the day.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>While there are homes with large solar systems with all their panels facing the same way, there are damn few that don&#8217;t use any electricity at all during the day.\u00a0 Almost everyone has a refrigerator, and most homes have a freezer as well. On top of this, remaining losses can be reduced or even eliminated if a modest effort is made to switch electricity consumption to the middle of the day.\u00a0 For example, homeowners can put electric hot water systems, pool filters, and other appliances on timers so they&#8217;ll switch on when solar energy output is high.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In this article I will:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Give a quick rundown of what solar export limiting is.<\/li>\r\n<li>Explain why the losses are usually small.<\/li>\r\n<li>Show graphs displaying losses in each Australian capital city in a worst-case situation.<\/li>\r\n<li>Finish off by saying, outside of extreme cases, the losses will be low.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;ll knock off early and have a liquid lunch.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-1' id='enref-48644-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Solar Export Limiting Links<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>I wrote in detail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting\/\">about export limiting here<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li>If you want a brief explanation of how export limiting works, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.solarquotes.com.au\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360000030495-How-does-a-solar-export-limiter-work-\">read this<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Alternatively, if you only want to know if you can install an export limited system in your area, you find a summary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/grid-connection\/\">grid connection rules here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>But if you&#8217;re anything like me, you&#8217;re not going to bother checking the links, so I&#8217;ll start by giving a quick explanation of what export limiting is.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Solar Export Limiting In A Nutshell<\/h2>\r\n<p>There is a limit to how much solar power local grids can accept without grid upgrades.\u00a0 Solutions are being developed and implemented, but there will be constraints until then.\u00a0 Solar export limiting is a useful way to reduce the problem because it can allow many homes to export most of their surplus solar energy. The alternative is a limited number of homes being allowed to export all their surplus solar power, with a big fat zero export limit for anyone installing solar later.<\/p>\r\n<p>For moderate export limits, the amount of solar energy lost is small.\u00a0 While losing any clean generation is a shame, it&#8217;s better than the alternative where every new solar power system installation will be required to have a zero solar export limit because the grid can&#8217;t take any more. <br \/><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty2.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty2-291x300.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>My normal advice is to install as much solar as you can reasonably fit on your roof.\u00a0 But if you&#8217;re not absolutely flush with cash like I am&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_49234\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49234\" class=\"wp-image-49234 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/socksual_tension_smaller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/socksual_tension_smaller.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/socksual_tension_smaller-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only a rich man can afford to burn through socks by wearing shoes like this&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>I recommend installing as large a system as you can afford.\u00a0 If solar export limiting lets you install a larger system than you otherwise would be able to have, then I heartily recommend it &#8212; within reason.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Extreme Export Limiting<\/h2>\r\n<p>There are both good and bad reasons for export limiting a solar system:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Good:<\/strong>\u00a0 Provided it is permitted at your location &#8212; it can allow you to install a larger system than you&#8217;d normally be able to.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Bad:<\/strong>\u00a0 Due to local grid limitations, you can be required to export less to the grid than is normal in your area.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Using Export Limiting To Install A Large Solar System<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you are using export limiting to install a system larger than you&#8217;d otherwise be able to, for a typical installation it&#8217;s not possible to get too carried away.\u00a0 If, like many Australians, you face the following limits for new solar:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The maximum amount of solar power that you can export to the grid:\u00a0 5 kilowatts per phase.<\/li>\r\n<li>Maximum solar inverter capacity:\u00a0 10 kilowatts per phase.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Then export limiting your solar power system installation will allow the capacity of your inverter to be up to 10 kilowatts per phase.\u00a0 This allows single-phase homes to have a large 10 kilowatt inverter, while 3 phase homes can have a massive 30 kilowatt inverter.\u00a0 For a normal installation<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-2' id='enref-48644-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>2<\/a><\/sup> solar panel capacity can be up to one-third larger than the inverter capacity, so the solar panel capacity can&#8217;t be more than 2.66 times greater than the export limit.\u00a0 While this large difference can result in losses, for most households, they shouldn&#8217;t be excessive.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Exports Limited To Less Than Usual\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p>Unfortunately, an increasing number of Australians who want to install solar panels are told their exports will be limited<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-3' id='enref-48644-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>3<\/a><\/sup>. The amount may be very small, or you could even be required to have a zero export limit. If you are faced with a very low or a zero export limit, you&#8217;ll have to decide if solar power is still worthwhile for you.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_grid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_grid.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_grid-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_grid-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Even with a zero export limit, the good news is that it can still be financially worthwhile to install solar, as I explain in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/zero-kw-export-solar\/\">this article<\/a>.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-4' id='enref-48644-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>4<\/a><\/sup> \u00a0A solar power system installation can pay for itself by only providing electricity to the home. In most cases, the system will have to be 6.6 kilowatts or less to keep the length of time required to pay for itself reasonable.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If a home can export any solar power, even if it is just one kilowatt, the financial situation improves considerably.\u00a0 But you may want to reconsider my usual advice of installing as much solar as you can.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Why Losses Are Minor<\/h2>\r\n<p>There are two main reasons why losses from solar export limiting are less than many expect:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Most of the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/\">solar inverters<\/a> operate well below their maximum capacity.<\/li>\r\n<li>Electricity consumption by the home reduces losses from export limiting.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Solar System Output Usually Below Maximum<\/h2>\r\n<p>For a solar inverter to provide its maximum output, the following two conditions usually have to be met:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The solar panel capacity needs to be greater than the inverter capacity.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-5' id='enref-48644-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>5<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>The sun needs to be close to directly over the panels.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s normal these days for solar systems to have a panel capacity up to one-third larger than the inverter capacity but &#8212; unless your name is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IsEmF9urYDk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joshua<\/a> and you blow a mean horn &#8212; the sun isn&#8217;t likely to stay still in the sky and let you maximize your solar output. \u00a0Instead, the sun will spend most of the day either climbing up to the optimal position or climbing back down from it.\u00a0 For north-facing solar panels, this means they&#8217;ll only be able to provide their maximum output on a clear day around noon.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>There are also plenty of other factors that contribute to solar systems normally operating below their potential maximum.\u00a0 These include&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Clouds, haze, smoke, and smog.<\/li>\r\n<li>The low position of the winter sun in the sky &#8212; outside of the tropics.<\/li>\r\n<li>Heat: All else equal, each 10 degree increase in temperature reduces typical panels&#8217; output by almost 4%.<\/li>\r\n<li>Solar panels often don&#8217;t face the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/direction\/\">optimal direction<\/a> for maximum power output, which is normally north or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/best-solar-panel-direction\/\">close to it<\/a>.\u00a0 They also usually aren&#8217;t at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panels-tilt-angle\/\">ideal tilt angle<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Dirt on panels.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>So even if a solar power system with a 5 kilowatt export limit has 10 kilowatts of panels, most of the time those panels will be producing less than the 5 kilowatt export limit.\u00a0 At these times, it won&#8217;t be possible for solar energy to go to waste.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_giant_head.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"694\" height=\"582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_giant_head.jpg 694w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scottie_giant_head-300x252.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Household Consumption Comes First<\/h2>\r\n<p>Another major factor reducing losses is the consumption of solar power by the home itself.\u00a0 Only the surplus left over after household demand is met is available for export.\u00a0 So if a home with a 5 kilowatt solar export limit is consuming two kilowatts of power while the solar system produces 7 kilowatts of power, no generation will go to waste.<\/p>\r\n<p>If no one is at home during the middle of the day, electricity consumption can be low, but most homes have at least a refrigerator running that will consume a portion of the solar energy produced.\u00a0 Even if no effort is made to shift consumption to the middle of the day, a normal home with a refrigerator and freezer will draw enough power to at least reduce losses.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, it&#8217;s not difficult to shift electricity consumption to the middle of the day.\u00a0 Electric hot water systems and pool filters can be put on timers, as can many other appliances.\u00a0 This is a simple and effective way to reduce or eliminate losses.\u00a0 There are also more sophisticated approaches than using a timer, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-hot-water-diverter-comparison\/\">solar hot water diverter<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/catch-solar-relay-review\/\">relay<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49255\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_self_consumption.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_self_consumption.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_self_consumption-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Small Solar Systems &amp; Extreme Export Limits<\/h2>\r\n<p>Self-consumption of solar energy can allow a household to have low losses from export limiting.\u00a0 This can be the case even if the export limit is very low, provided the solar system installation isn&#8217;t too large.\u00a0 If there are usually people at home during the day or an effort to shift electricity consumption to the daytime, then a 6.6 kilowatt solar power system can still have fairly low losses even if it has a one kilowatt export limit.\u00a0 But this will, of course, depend on how much electricity is consumed.\u00a0 If your home only averages 4 kilowatt-hours of consumption per day, there will still be plenty of losses in this situation.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>I Used PVWatts<\/h2>\r\n<p>To work out the likely losses from solar export limiting in each Australian capital city, I used <a href=\"https:\/\/pvwatts.nrel.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PVWatts<\/a>.\u00a0 This handy American site gives estimates of solar output for locations around the world<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-6' id='enref-48644-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 It lets you adjust a range of parameters and &#8212; within some limits &#8212; let me compare the output of systems with and without export limiting.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-7' id='enref-48644-7' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>7<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>One of the limits meant I could only get information for systems with a maximum panel capacity equal to twice their solar export limit.\u00a0 But most people using export limiting to install a large system probably won&#8217;t go far beyond this, so it&#8217;s not a huge drawback.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The PVWatts site may not be perfect, but I find it&#8217;s generally very accurate and I have a considerable amount of trust in the results it gives me.\u00a0 (If the results it gives turn out to be screwy I&#8217;m really going to look really stupid after saying that.)<\/p>\r\n<h2>It&#8217;s A Worst Case Scenario<\/h2>\r\n<p>There are three things to keep in mind when looking at losses from solar export limiting in the graphs below:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>The results are all based on a worst-case scenario.<\/li>\r\n<li>Every scenario is based on a worst-case situation, and finally&#8230;<\/li>\r\n<li>These scenarios\u00a0 &#8212; they don&#8217;t get worse than this.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>The two main reasons why they are worst-case scenarios<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-8' id='enref-48644-8' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>8<\/a><\/sup> are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>It is assumed the home consumes no electricity during the day, which is not realistic.<\/li>\r\n<li>All panels are assumed to face the same direction, which is normally not the case for larger solar systems.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>While less important, there is another reason why they are worst-case scenarios:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The results are for a new system installation, and no allowance is made for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panel-degradation\/\">slow deterioration<\/a> in panel output that occurs over time.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-export-limiting-losses\/#en-48644-9' id='enref-48644-9' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(48644)'>9<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 While this should only be around 0.5% a year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">decent quality solar panels<\/a> that have been properly installed, it&#8217;s enough to slowly reduce losses from export limiting as the years pass by.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Details Fed To PVWatts<\/h2>\r\n<p>It took me a long time to get all the information out of PVWatts for the capital cities.\u00a0 The process was so tedious it almost drove me to drink.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49229 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_drunk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_drunk.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/scotty_drunk-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>But in the end, I got it done, after making some decisions on&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Solar panel direction &#8211; North<\/li>\r\n<li>Panel tilt &#8211; 20\u00ba<\/li>\r\n<li>Panel capacity and the solar export limit amount &#8211; 5, 6, 6.6, 7, 8, 9, 10 kW of panels, 5kW export limit.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>Here are the results.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Adelaide<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Solar Export Limit:\u00a0 Normally 5 kilowatts per phase in South Australia.<\/li>\r\n<li>Inverter Capacity Limit:\u00a0 Normally 10 kilowatts per phase in South Australia.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Adelaide is the capital with the second-highest losses for export limited systems, mostly thanks to clear summer skies with occasional periods of mild temperatures as cold air moves in from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Ocean#Australian_standpoint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Ocean<\/a>.\u00a0 But even in this worst-case situation, an inverter export limited to 5 kilowatts with 10 kilowatts of panels will only lose 14% of total generation.\u00a0 This is in comparison to a 10 kilowatt inverter with 10 kilowatts of solar panels and no export limit.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49130 size-full\"
