Established in 1998, the NPI is <span class=\"aCOpRe\">managed by Federal, State and Territory Governments, providing information about toxic substance emissions<\/span><span class=\"aCOpRe\"> across the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aCOpRe\">EJA says nationally for the period July 2019 \u2013 June 2020, coal-fired power stations remained the dominant source of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Fine particle pollution PM2.5 &#8211; 24% of the national \u2018all sources\u2019 total. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">PM 2.5 pollution consists of particles small enough to enter the bloodstream via the lungs and damage organs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Oxides of nitrogen NOx &#8211; 24%. Irritation of eyes, nose, throat and lungs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Sulfur dioxide SO2 &#8211; 47%. M<span data-contrast=\"none\">ay cause inflammation of the respiratory trac<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Mercury &#8211; 11%. A heavy metal that <span data-contrast=\"none\">damage<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<span class=\"aCOpRe\"> the brain, kidneys, and developing foetus<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"aCOpRe\">Compared to 2018\/19:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PM 2.5 &#8211; 25%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Oxides of nitrogen <\/span><span class=\"aCOpRe\"> NOx<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> &#8211; 25%\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sulfur dioxide SO2 &#8211; 44%<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mercury &#8211; 9%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compared to 2015\/16:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PM 2.5 &#8211; 28.5%<\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Oxides of nitrogen NOx &#8211; 27%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sulfur dioxide SO2 &#8211; 46.5%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mercury &#8211; 13.5%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;In the last five years, at every\u00a0opportunity, our governments have failed to do anything to\u00a0make coal-fired power operators\u00a0reduce toxic air pollution and protect community health,&#8221; says EJA&#8217;s Max Smith.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Coal Power On Its Way Out, But&#8230;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Where governments have failed, the market has stepped in &#8211; coal power&#8217;s days are numbered in Australia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For example, last month EnergyAustralia announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/yallourn-closure-taylor-mb1912\/\"> Yallourn Power Station will retire<\/a> in mid-2028 instead of 2032 and it is a major emitter of the substances listed above &#8211; according to EJA it&#8217;s the second biggest emitter of PM2.5 in the nation. Yallourn became the target of legal action by Environmental Justice Australia lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.envirojustice.org.au\/environmental-lawyers-challenge-epa-and-energyaustralia-in-vcat-over-pollution-control-at-yallourn-power-station\/\">last year<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While coal power is being shown the door it will continue to wreak havoc on its way out &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/nsw-coal-ash-mb1927\/\">and beyond<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;According to recent peer-reviewed research, in the last five years, approximately 72,500 children have suffered asthma attacks and symptoms, 4250 babies have been born underweight, and 4000 people have died prematurely from exposure to toxic air pollution from coal-fired power stations,&#8221; states EJA.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The audit report quotes two GP&#8217;s &#8211; one from the Hunter Valley and another from Gippsland &#8211; who say they see the impacts of coal power on human health each day within their practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>National Pollutant Inventory Problematic<\/h2>\n<p>The NPI is a useful tool, but EJA notes only <a href=\"https:\/\/data.gov.au\/dataset\/043f58e0-a188-4458-b61c-04e5b540aea4\/resource\/202fae5b-aade-4e0e-b5c7-1ffeca54b03b\/download\/substances.csv\">93 toxic substances<\/a> are reported, whereas the USA&#8217;s Toxics Release Inventory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/toxics-release-inventory-tri-program\/tri-listed-chemicals\">lists hundreds more<\/a>. EJA also says figures reported are estimations made by the polluters, &#8220;who have an interest in underreporting pollution&#8221;, reporting errors are not fixed and queries are not responded to.<\/p>\n<p>The NPI is currently being reviewed &#8211;
