This was accompanied by digital advertising campaign and the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australiasgreatestliability.com\/\">AustraliasGreatestLiability.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday evening, AGL&#8217;s legal team served the group with an application for an urgent interlocutory (interim) injunction, demanding Greenpeace remove AGL logos from its campaign. That application was heard in the Federal Court on Friday and the injunction was denied, but this isn&#8217;t over yet as the case returns to court tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Senior campaigner for Greenpeace Australia Pacific Glenn Walker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.au\/news\/agl-launches-legal-battle-against-greenpeace-over-climate-change-campaign\/\">said<\/a> his organisation is ready for a &#8220;David and Goliath&#8221; battle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is yet another attempt by the coal industry to stop grassroots organisations from exposing the damage that it is doing to the climate, to the environment and to human health.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regarding the essence of its report, Greenpeace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeaceaustraliapacific\/posts\/10159777082427971\">says<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;AGL has traded on its \u2018sustainable\u2019 image for years, trying to hide its dirty and climate-wrecking coal operations by masquerading as a renewables leader when 85% of the power it generates comes from dirty coal. This makes AGL Australia\u2019s biggest domestic contributor to climate change.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_50178\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50178\" class=\"wp-image-50178 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/climate-pollution-graph-2.png\" alt=\"Climate pollution graph\" width=\"800\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/climate-pollution-graph-2.png 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/climate-pollution-graph-2-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/climate-pollution-graph-2-768x456.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph from Greenpeace &#8220;Coal-faced&#8221; report<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Greenpeace states AGL was responsible for more than 42 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2019\/20;\u00a0 more than 8 per cent of Australia\u2019s total emissions.<\/p>\n<p>AGL&#8217;s coal burners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bayswater power station- 2.6GW<\/li>\n<li>Liddell power station &#8211; 2GW (but operating below that in recent times)<\/li>\n<li>Loy Yang A &#8211; 2.2GW<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three facilities represent over a quarter of Australia\u2019s coal power station capacity.<\/p>\n<p>But..<\/p>\n<h2>For Liddell, The End Is Nigh<\/h2>\n<p>The days are numbered for clapped-out coal fired clunker Liddell, which is slated to starting closing next year after 50 years of wreaking atmospheric and other havoc. AGL reported on Friday that it had awarded the tender for the first stage of Liddell&#8217;s closure, decommissioning and demolition planning.<\/p>\n<p>Bayswater is currently getting an upgrade that will provide more capacity without increasing coal consumption and emissions according to AGL. As for Loy Yang A, it&#8217;s pretty much business as usual &#8211; more dirty power and if history is anything to go by, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/victoria-coal-reliability-mb1099\/\">breakdowns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But if AGL is making some solid progress in addressing carbon emissions, is Greenpeace being a bit harsh with such an intense campaign?<\/p>\n<p>While waving ta-ta to Liddell will be a great thing, Loy Yang A and Bayswater&#8217;s continued operations for the foreseeable future are problematic &#8211; although increasingly cheaper wind and solar energy are really <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/coal-retirements-solar-mb1666\/\">piling on the pressure<\/a> regarding their ongoing viability. In March, EnergyAustralia announced the brown coal-fired, emissions-belching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/yallourn-closure-taylor-mb1912\/\">Yallourn Power Station will be retired in mid-2028<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as SQ&#8217;s Ronald recently mentioned, given the dire situation we face:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The amount of additional CO2 we can safely add to the atmosphere is zero.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If both AGL&#8217;s remaining plants continue to operate until their intended end-of-life dates (Bayswater: 2035 and Loy Yang A: 2048), they&#8217;ll spew hundreds of millions of tonnes more greenhouse emissions before they are done and coal-dusted. Added to that are all the other toxic emissions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/nsw-coal-ash-mb1927\/\">coal ash<\/a> that will be produced.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace is calling on AGL to retire all of its coal-burning power stations by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The continued rise of clean energy is inevitable: it is not a question of if, but when, Australia will be powered entirely by renewables,&#8221;
