The <a href=\"https:\/\/parks.des.qld.gov.au\/parks\/mon-repos\"> Park<\/a> supports the largest concentration of marine turtles in eastern Australia and the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.des.qld.gov.au\/wildlife\/animals\/discovering-wildlife\/turtle-watching\/turtle-species\/loggerhead-turtle\"> loggerhead turtle<\/a> nesting population in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>The research facility, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, is about to get a much greener electricity supply thanks to the installation of a 170kW solar power system (446 panels) and 400kWh of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/\">battery storage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Palaszczuk Government is investing $750,000 in the project, which will be installed next month. Once operational, it&#8217;s expected to cover 97% of the centre&#8217;s electricity consumption.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMore than 30,000 people visit the Mon Repos Turtle Centre each year \u2013 promoting the importance of protecting our turtles and injecting valuable dollars into the local economy &#8211; and very soon the electricity used to power the interactive displays, research and turtle encounters will be driven by solar energy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/statements\/92257\">said<\/a> Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Mon Repos project is in addition to $1.5 million in solar upgrades to remote area power systems in several national parks throughout the state, which will collectively reduce operating costs by a whopping $10 million and avoid 12,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over their service lifetimes.<\/p>\n<h2>Climate Change A Bum Deal For Marine Turtles<\/h2>\n<p>Marine turtles including loggerheads will and are already being negatively impacted by climate change &#8211; and in some really unusual ways.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50887 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/turtle-hatchlings.jpg\" alt=\"Turtle hatchlings\" width=\"800\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/turtle-hatchlings.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/turtle-hatchlings-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/turtle-hatchlings-768x412.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, changes in nesting sand temperature affects loggerhead hatchling sex ratios. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.int\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/fact_sheet_loggerhead_turtle_climate_change.pdf\">According to<\/a> the UN Environment Programme, a temperature of equal to or less than 28 \u030aC results in males; 30 \u030aC means there are equal chances of the turtle being either male or female; and equal to or more than 32 \u030aC results in females. This could eventually result in a situation where there aren&#8217;t enough males around for successful reproduction of the population. Nesting sand temperatures\u00a0 above 34 \u030aC pose another potential risk &#8211; it&#8217;s thought to increase the probability of mutations in hatchlings.<\/p>\n<p>Other climate change related threats to loggerhead turtles include increased extreme weather events eroding nests and a decrease in food supply coupled with an increased need to feed given the turtles are ectothermic (&#8220;cold-blooded&#8221;). The hotter they are, the higher their metabolism and the more they have to eat.<\/p>\n<p>Added to all the other challenges these and other species of marine turtles face from human activity &#8211; such as starvation caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/stories\/what-do-sea-turtles-eat-unfortunately-plastic-bags\">ingestion of plastic bags<\/a> mistaken for jellyfish and entanglement in marine debris &#8211; the future is looking pretty crap for marine turtles unless we turn things around quickly.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s wonderful the Palaszczuk Government is investing in this solar + battery storage project, the <a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/queensland-leads-the-world-in-australias-coal-mining-blitz\/\">coal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/statements\/92242\">gas<\/a> situation in Queensland is anything but &#8211;
