{"id":52437,"date":"2021-07-29T08:06:46","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T21:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=52437"},"modified":"2021-07-29T08:06:46","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T21:36:46","slug":"geelong-zero-emissions-mb2096","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/geelong-zero-emissions-mb2096\/","title":{"rendered":"City Of Greater Geelong Eyes Net Zero Emissions Community-Wide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/geelong-zero-emissions.jpg\" alt=\"City of Greater Geelong zero emissions\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/geelong-zero-emissions.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/geelong-zero-emissions-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/geelong-zero-emissions-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/geelong-zero-emissions-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The City Of Greater Geelong&#8217;s ambitious Draft Climate Change Response Plan includes a target of zero net emissions by 2035 for the entire community.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The draft plan, which was endorsed for release by Council on Tuesday night for <span class=\"redactor-invisible-space\">public exhibition and stakeholder and community consultation<\/span>, contains 80 actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSustainable caretaking of our environment must be placed at the forefront of our decision-making, not because it is on trend or winning votes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geelongaustralia.com.au\/news\/item\/8d951c4a8e37552.aspx\">said<\/a> Councillor Belinda Moloney, Chair of the Climate Change Action portfolio. \u201cCouncil and councillors have a duty of care to educate ourselves and our community as to how to correct our actions and do our part to avoid widescale catastrophic climate-related events.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Renewable energy of course features heavily among the actions in the plan, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actively discouraging gas infrastructure in new developments and support of renewable alternatives by 2022.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting community-owned renewable energy initiatives.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting community-based programs enabling economies-of-scale procurement of renewable technology (e.g. PV bulk buys)<\/li>\n<li>Investigating and implementing additional ways of supporting greater uptake of renewables for Geelong&#8217;s business and community by 2023<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the establishment of a regional renewable energy research and development hub that will also provide related education across the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s looking like the time ahead will be an even busier one for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/installers\/cities\/geelong\/\">Geelong solar installers<\/a>. There are certainly plenty of rooftops without solar panels in the region currently that could benefit from the emissions and energy cost reduction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar<\/a> provides. <a href=\"https:\/\/pv-map.apvi.org.au\/historical#11\/-38.1437\/144.4201\">According to<\/a> the Australia Photovoltaic Institute (APVI), a whisker under 20% of dwellings in the local government area have solar installations.<\/p>\n<h2>City Of Greater Geelong Corporate Emissions Reduction<\/h2>\n<p>But what&#8217;s Council doing about its own emissions? While it has made significant inroads, the City of Greater Geelong was still accounting for just over one per cent of total community emissions. The City has committed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All City-managed operations to reach net zero emissions by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>100 per cent renewable electricity supply used for all City-owned and operated buildings, and streetlights this year (achieved).<\/li>\n<li>95 per cent of methane emissions from Drysdale Landfill methane gas recovered for use in energy production by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>All City-owned light fleet vehicles to run on zero-emission power sources by 2027.<\/li>\n<li>Undertake an assessment of its gas infrastructure by next year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, the City is walking the talk and leading by example. On the renewables front and in terms of solar energy self-generation, Council has installed more than 1MW of solar power capacity across 27 of its facilities to date &#8211; and there&#8217;s more to come. An example of an already operating installation is the 30kW PV array atop Leisurelink Waurn Ponds, pictured above, that was installed last year.<\/p>\n<p>For the energy shortfall not supplied by solar PV and other on-site renewable sources, this is covered under a Victorian Energy Collaboration (<a href=\"https:\/\/veco.org.au\/\">VECO<\/a>) Power Purchase Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Feedback on the Draft Plan closes on August 24. After review of the submissions, the plan will be finalised and then Geelong Council endorsement sought in October this year.
