{"id":54625,"date":"2021-10-08T05:02:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-07T18:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=54625"},"modified":"2021-10-08T05:02:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T18:32:13","slug":"rooftop-solar-power-world-mb2186","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/rooftop-solar-power-world-mb2186\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Rooftop Solar Panels Could Power The World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/rooftop-solar-world-2.jpg\" alt=\"Rooftop solar powering the world\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/rooftop-solar-world-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/rooftop-solar-world-2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/rooftop-solar-world-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/rooftop-solar-world-2-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A global assessment of the electricity generation potential of rooftop solar panels has arrived at some very interesting conclusions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Researchers from University College Cork in Ireland, Imperial College London, Ahmedabad University in India and the USA&#8217;s Colombia University mapped 130 million km2 of the Earth&#8217;s land to identify 0.2 million km2 of rooftop area using a machine learning algorithm whipped up for the task.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis of the rooftop area to determine the global electricity generation potential of rooftop panels found 27 petawatt-hours (PWh)<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/rooftop-solar-power-world-mb2186\/#en-54625-1' id='enref-54625-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(54625)'>1<\/a><\/sup> per year can be generated &#8211; more than global annual energy (assumed to mean electricity) consumption in 2018<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/rooftop-solar-power-world-mb2186\/#en-54625-2' id='enref-54625-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(54625)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment found the following technical potential in various regions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asia: 13 PWh per year<\/li>\n<li>North America: 5.5 PWh yr<\/li>\n<li>Europe: 3.6 PWh yr<\/li>\n<li>Africa: 2.9 PWh yr<\/li>\n<li>South America: 1.7 PWh yr<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Australia and New Zealand combined, the potential was 404 PWh annually. That seems incredibly high. In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/australia-electricity-generation-mb1540\/\">Australia generated<\/a> an estimated 0.27 PWh (265,117 GWh) of electricity from all sources; renewables and fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<h2>Ifs, Buts And Maybes<\/h2>\n<p>The authors of the study note rooftop PV&#8217;s future potential depends on the development and cost of storage solutions for the generated energy.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s always a catch isn&#8217;t there? But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/\">solar batteries<\/a> and other forms of energy storage will come down in price as scale and efficiency of production picks up and technology evolves. The way we use energy will also evolve to make better use of those golden hours of sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>Among the assumptions made for the study were 100% rooftop availability at 10% panel efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>But not every rooftop or every part of a rooftop is suitable for solar panels. For example, warehouses can offer huge rooftop areas, but they may have &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/slender-roofs-home-solar-mb0534\/\">slender roofs<\/a>&#8220;, built to minimum specification and not able to bear the weight of a bunch of panels<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/rooftop-solar-power-world-mb2186\/#en-54625-3' id='enref-54625-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(54625)'>3<\/a><\/sup>. However, there are already solutions for this scenario such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/sunman-energy-review.html\">Sunman Energy&#8217;s<\/a> lightweight, stick-on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panels-typhoon-mb2111\/\">eArc solar panels<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/maxeon-air-panels-mb2002\/\">Maxeon Air<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t be far off.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side is the 10% panel efficiency used for the study. It&#8217;s been a very long time since the average solar panel was only 10% efficient. These days they start at around 18% for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">good quality solar panels<\/a>, even at the budget end of the spectrum.
