We can only get these cheeky foreigners to give us solar panels by providing Australian goods and services in return.\u00a0 So every dollar spent on overseas solar panels is a dollar that gets spent on Australian production.\u00a0 This applies to everything we import.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Sure, we&#8217;d be better off if foreigners sent us free stuff.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not going to happen.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I know many people reading this will have this strong gut reaction:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>Ronald, you&#8217;re a fool! There must be a loss to Australia when overseas products are bought.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>So I&#8217;ll spend the rest of this blog post explaining why this reaction is wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>You Can&#8217;t Import Without Exporting<\/h2>\r\n<p>On the topic of international trade, the one overarching point I want to make is:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><strong>You can&#8217;t import without exporting.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>If Australia stopped importing, it would ruin our export industries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I was born in Toowoomba.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the service centre of the Darling Downs, a major producer of cotton, beef, wheat and other agricultural products.\u00a0 Much of this is sold overseas.\u00a0 Australia is the world&#8217;s&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>3rd largest cotton exporter<\/li>\r\n<li>2nd largest beef exporter<\/li>\r\n<li>3rd largest wheat exporter<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/imported-solar-panels-australia\/#en-56018-1' id='enref-56018-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(56018)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Toowoomba&#8217;s economy is dependent on these exports.\u00a0 If Australia stopped importing, the livelihoods of tens of thousands of ordinary Australians &#8212; as well as plenty of weird Australians &#8212; would be in tatters.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>This is because the only way you can export without importing is to give away stuff for free, and I&#8217;m pretty sure the people of the Darling Downs won&#8217;t be thrilled with that idea.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The products we import from overseas pay for our exports and vice versa.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>How Imports Pay For Our Exports &#8212; An Example<\/h2>\r\n<p>Every dollar we spend on imports is matched by a dollar in exports.\u00a0 Say you want to build a small solar farm and pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/jinko-solar-review.html\">Jinko Solar<\/a> &#8212; the world&#8217;s largest solar panel manufacturer &#8212; one million dollars for 7,500 solar panels.<\/p>\r\n<p><div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"One Million Dollars -  Dr Evil\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGMwcTatIr8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\r\n<p>You now have 290 pallets of panels, and Jinko Solar has one million Australian dollars.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got what you want, but Jinko Solar doesn&#8217;t have anything immediately useful to them.\u00a0 They can&#8217;t use Australian dollars to pay their workers or buy inputs to manufacture solar panels.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Xiande Li, the CEO of Jinko Solar&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56345 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_cool.jpg\" alt=\"Xiande Li, the CEO of Jinko Solar\" width=\"396\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_cool.jpg 396w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_cool-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>&#8230;can&#8217;t use it down at the noodle bar to buy lunch.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_hungry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_hungry.jpg 396w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/oz_ceo_hungry-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>This is because the noodle bar only accepts Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renminbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yuan<\/a>. So if Mr Xiande wants to use the $1 million Australian, he&#8217;ll have to exchange it at the bank for Chinese currency.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But a Shanghai bank doesn&#8217;t want Australian dollars either. \u00a0They will act as a middleman and pass the AUD on to someone who can use it &#8212; an individual or company wanting to buy Australian goods or services.\u00a0 This is the only real reason anyone not a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Notaphily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">notaphilist<\/a> wants Australian dollars.\u00a0 To buy something Australian with them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Although Xiande Li can&#8217;t spend the Australian dollars at the local noodle bar, they could end up paying for Australian wheat used to make their squiggly food.\u00a0 Around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daf.qld.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0006\/53799\/Wheat-FactSheet-Quality-Markets-Qld.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">34% of the wheat<\/a> Australia exports is used for noodles, so some Shanghai food wholesaler could buy those AUD from the bank to buy the Australian Standard Noodle Wheat that ends up in Mr Xiande&#8217;s lunch.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Nothing Changes If A Bank Isn&#8217;t Used<\/h2>\r\n<p>Nothing changes if Jinko Solar doesn&#8217;t exchange the one million dollars at the bank and use it to buy goods from Australia directly.\u00a0 It still ends up paying for Australian production. For example, Jinko uses tens of thousands of tonnes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cEDfOUpGyGo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">aluminium<\/a> each year for solar panel frames, so they could use it to purchase Australian aluminium ingots directly.\u00a0 The Australian dollars still end up being spent on Australian products.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>But I Buy Chinese Stuff With US Dollars!<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever bought anything directly from China &#8212; or many other countries &#8212; there&#8217;s a good chance you paid with US dollars.\u00a0 This doesn&#8217;t change anything. It&#8217;s just an extra step.\u00a0 It works like this:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>You exchange Ozzie dollarydoos for US dollars at a bank or other financial institution.<\/li>\r\n<li>You pay for your Chinese goods in US dollars<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/imported-solar-panels-australia\/#en-56018-2' id='enref-56018-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(56018)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\r\n<li>The seller in China exchanges the US dollars for Chinese yuan.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>The US dollar is the middleman currency of the world because, despite Donald Trump&#8217;s best efforts, the US is still a superpower, and its dollar dominates international trade.\u00a0 The US dollar is convenient because its cost of exchange is low.\u00a0 This is because it&#8217;s very liquid.\u00a0 This doesn&#8217;t mean Jeff Bezos puts hundred dollar notes in a blender with half a bottle of vodka to make cocktails<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/imported-solar-panels-australia\/#en-56018-3' id='enref-56018-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(56018)'>3<\/a><\/sup>. It means there&#8217;s always lots of US dollars being traded, so banks never have to hold onto them for long.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Trade Deficits &amp; Surpluses<\/h2>\r\n<p>If exports equal imports, you may be wondering how a country can run a trade deficit or surplus.\u00a0 What happens is, when Australia runs a trade deficit, we import more goods than we export and promise to pay back the difference later.\u00a0 When we have a trade surplus &#8212; currently, we&#8217;re running one at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/trade\/resources\/trade-statistics\/australias-trade-balance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record level<\/a> &#8212; it works the other way.\u00a0 When you add in what people owe each other, imports equal exports.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Employment Should Be A Wash<\/h2>\r\n<p>Many Australians, including plenty of farmers on the Darling Downs, work in export industries.\u00a0 Because of this, buying products made overseas should have little effect on employment one way or the other.\u00a0 When you spend money buying overseas solar panels, it keeps Australians in export industries in work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Trade is &#8212; if you were taken advantage of by some sleazy salesperson &#8212; I&#8217;ll feel sorry for you.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Trade &amp; The Environment<\/h2>\r\n<p>Some may say I&#8217;m a hypocrite because I&#8217;m against people freely choosing to buy and burn fossil fuels.\u00a0 But this isn&#8217;t free trade because the action harms others.\u00a0 Not just the buyer or seller, but the planet.\u00a0 We have to accept some risk of things going wrong, but destabilizing climate and potentially destroying the world&#8217;s ability to feed itself is not reasonable. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>One environmental concern involving trade is shipping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1266963\/amount-of-fuel-consumed-by-ships-worldwide-by-fuel-type\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consumes 4.8%<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/charts\/world-oil-supply-and-demand-1971-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world oil consumption<\/a>.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t good, but there are also efficiencies and emission reductions from producing products in some locations and shipping them to others.\u00a0 For example, New Zealand and Norway&#8217;s low emission electricity means they produce some of the world&#8217;s cleanest aluminium. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The world should directly solve the problem of emissions from cargo ships by reducing emissions from cargo ships, rather than indirectly by reducing trade<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/imported-solar-panels-australia\/#en-56018-6' id='enref-56018-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(56018)'>6<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Imports Make Our Lives Better<\/h2>\r\n<p>Some people are dead set against imports.\u00a0 Usually not dead set enough to not buy them when it&#8217;s to their benefit, but enough to complain about it at length on the internet that was developed mostly in the US and UK, using a device made of components invented and manufactured around the world, and assembled in China.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>International trade benefits Australia by giving us more products to choose from while we specialise in some areas and benefit from other nations&#8217; specialisations.\u00a0 Australians are better off with trade than without it.\u00a0 We&#8217;d all be a lot poorer if we tried to make everything ourselves.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Let me put it this way &#8212; or at least Australian domination.\u00a0 They think if you buy anything from China, it will somehow assist China&#8217;s murderous plans.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Our best hope for the future is for all nations to become rich and peaceful, and trade is one of the best tools we have for achieving this.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>To refuse to trade in the hope of avoiding a future conflict is &#8212; outside of some specific circumstances<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/imported-solar-panels-australia\/#en-56018-7' id='enref-56018-7' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(56018)'>7<\/a><\/sup> &#8212;
