{"id":57726,"date":"2022-01-11T05:43:57","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T19:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=57726"},"modified":"2023-07-09T09:15:36","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T22:45:36","slug":"solar-30-australia-mb2309","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-30-australia-mb2309\/","title":{"rendered":"$40 Million Funding For Australia&#8217;s Solar 30 30 30 Goal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/solar-30-australia.jpg\" alt=\"Solar 30 30 30 - Australia\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/solar-30-australia.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/solar-30-australia-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/solar-30-australia-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/solar-30-australia-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is throwing a fistful of cash at making solar power even cheaper than it is now.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What Is Solar 30 30 30?<\/h2>\n<p>In November last year, Federal Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.industry.gov.au\/data-and-publications\/technology-investment-roadmap-low-emissions-technology-statement-2021\">Low Emissions Technology Statement 2021<\/a> (LETS 2021), part of the Morrison Government&#8217;s Technology Investment Roadmap.<\/p>\n<p>LETS 2021 introduced a stretch goal<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-30-australia-mb2309\/#en-57726-1' id='enref-57726-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(57726)'>1<\/a><\/sup> of ultra low-cost solar electricity generation as another priority &#8211; $15 per MWh Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-30-australia-mb2309\/#en-57726-2' id='enref-57726-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(57726)'>2<\/a><\/sup>) for utility-scale solar power; which is approximately a third of today\u2019s costs.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the government said it will work toward achieving 30% module efficiency and reducing balance of system costs by approximately 70%. So, 30% module efficiency at 30 cents per installed watt by 2030 &#8211; Solar 30 30 30.<\/p>\n<h2>ARENA Kicks In Cash<\/h2>\n<p>Yesterday, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced it would provide up to $40 million in funding to support research and development towards Solar 30 30 30 across two streams of up to $20 million each.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cells and Modules: research, development and innovation.<\/li>\n<li>Balance of system (BOS), operations and maintenance: other innovations with the potential to reduce the upfront and ongoing costs of utility scale solar power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Ultra Low Cost Solar PV (ULCS) Round is open to a wide range of interested parties, including research groups and commercial entities. The closing date for proposals is 11 April 2022 and further details on applying <a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/funding\/ultra-low-cost-solar-pv-research-and-development-round\/\"> can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can Solar 30 30 30 Be Achieved?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.csiro.au\/publications\/publication\/PIcsiro:EP2021-3374\">consultation draft<\/a> of CSIRO&#8217;s GenCost assessment released in December, the levelised cost of electricity using solar PV at utility scale was within the range of $44 to $65 per MWh.<\/p>\n<p>Module efficiencies of conventional panels for residential rooftops are currently around the 20% mark for commercially available budget-end solar panels and 22% at the higher end, with incremental improvements made quite regularly. You can compare efficiencies, other specifications and estimated pricing of panels available in Australia using SQ&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/comparison\/compare-solar-panels\/\">solar panel comparison table<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While we don&#8217;t manufacture much in the way of solar panels in Australia, this country has been a leader in solar energy research for decades. In fact, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/australian-solar-research-mb2283\/\">Australian solar research<\/a> that helped push down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">cost of solar<\/a> to what it is today &#8211; more than 80% less than in 2010 in terms of large-scale solar power.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat great work continues through ACAP, our universities and CSIRO as well as clean energy startups,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/news\/40-million-funding-round-to-drive-ultra-low-cost-solar\/\">said<\/a> ARENA CEO Darren Miller.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No doubt there will be a number of applicants wanting to give this a red-hot go. And as our PM has previously told us, those who have a go, get a go.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Solar 30 30 30 target is crucial to getting solar power down to less than $15 per megawatt hour,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minister.industry.gov.au\/ministers\/taylor\/media-releases\/funding-ultra-low-cost-solar-technology\">said Minister Taylor<\/a>. \u201cWe are committed to reducing electricity sector emissions and unlocking the potential of other low emissions technologies like clean hydrogen.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; again with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?s=hydrogen\">hydrogen<\/a>. But it makes a change from fossil-fuel gas (another Angus fave), and cheaper solar power would mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/anu-cheap-hydrogen\/\">cheap hydrogen<\/a>, low emissions aluminium and steel.<\/p>\n<p>While this stretch goal is focused on utility scale; if achieved the benefits could flow on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/commercial-solar-guide.html\">commercial<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">home solar power<\/a> too. And if it isn&#8217;t, at least the Morrison Government can say it took a good shot at accelerating solar research and development and we&#8217;ll be closer to that point.
