An Okay Battery For An Okay World"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_60311\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60311\" class=\"wp-image-60311 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/solaredge-battery.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge Home Battery review\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/solaredge-battery.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/solaredge-battery-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/solaredge-battery-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/solaredge-battery-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The SolarEdge Home Battery: 9.7 kWh, DC Coupled, Optional Backup<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p><em><strong>Update November 5th, 2025: <\/strong><\/em><em>SolarEdge&#8217;s current home battery is nearly identical to this one and is called the SolarEdge Energy Bank.\u00a0 It&#8217;s slightly lighter and no longer contains an internal fire extinguisher, as it&#8217;s able to meet fire safety standards without one.\u00a0 Its details can be found on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/#compare\">Battery Comparison Table<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>At 4 o&#8217;clock last Thursday, SolarEdge launched their home battery with an online event.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The next day, they held another launch for people who couldn&#8217;t make it to the first one.\u00a0 I attended both and paid 55% attention each time, so I want you to know I gave this article 110%.<!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Some important features of the SolarEdge Home Battery are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>It has 9.7 kilowatt-hours of usable storage.<\/li>\r\n<li>It can provide 5 kilowatts of continuous power.<\/li>\r\n<li>It&#8217;s DC coupled.<\/li>\r\n<li>It 93.3% round trip efficiency, which is good.<\/li>\r\n<li>Back up costs extra.<\/li>\r\n<li>Single-phase homes can charge the battery from solar panels during a blackout with the backup option.<\/li>\r\n<li>Backup is only available with the SolarEdge Energy Hub inverter.<\/li>\r\n<li>It can be used without backup with the SolarEdge HD-Wave Genesis and HD-Wave EV inverters, and potentially the SolarEdge 3\u03c6 (three-phase) Residential Inverter in the future.<\/li>\r\n<li>Not recommended for off-grid use.<\/li>\r\n<li>Price isn&#8217;t clear but its installed cost without backup is likely to be under $10,000.\u00a0 <em><strong>Update 3:17pm 29th March 2020:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have been told the installed cost without backup is likely to be over $12,000 with the cost going higher with an inverter upgrade, which will often be required.<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The battery can be added to existing solar systems with compatible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/solaredge-review.html\">SolarEdge inverters<\/a>.\u00a0 SolarEdge says they&#8217;ll have a special offer that will allow SolarEdge owners without an Energy Hub inverter to upgrade to one at a reduced price if they buy the battery.\u00a0 This will also apply if people have an existing Solar Hub inverter and want to get a larger capacity one when they have the battery installed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Because it&#8217;s DC Coupled, there&#8217;s no internal battery inverter.\u00a0 This can be a big advantage in areas where battery inverter capacity counts towards the total solar inverter capacity permitted by the local DNSP (electricity network). \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Tech Specs<\/h2>\r\n<p>Here are some technical specs I pulled from its datasheet:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60317\" style=\"width: 986px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60317\" class=\"wp-image-60317 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_datas.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge Home Battery specifications\" width=\"976\" height=\"1018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_datas.jpg 976w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_datas-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_datas-768x801.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The SolarEdge Battery&#8217;s model number is BAT-10K1P, so presumably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=010wHPWw65g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Wayne<\/a> has a dozen of them.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>It says its &#8220;Peak Roundtrip Efficiency&#8221; is greater than 94.5%.\u00a0 I put a red line under the word &#8220;Peak&#8221; because it&#8217;s not the same as the actual roundtrip efficiency, which is around 93.3%.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Energy &amp; Power<\/h2>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s a 10 kilowatt-hour battery with 9.7 kilowatt-hours of usable storage.\u00a0 Most households average well under 10 kilowatt-hours consumption at night so, provided the solar system is large enough to regularly fully charge the battery, for a typical household it can potentially eliminate most grid electricity consumption.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Like most home battery systems with around 10 or more kilowatt-hours of storage, the SolarEdge Home Battery can provide a continuous 5 kilowatts of power.\u00a0 While this is enough to meet usual household needs, it&#8217;s not difficult to draw more than 5 kilowatts depending on what appliances are used.\u00a0 If your goal is to minimize grid electricity consumption it&#8217;s best to use high power draw devices such as electric hot water systems, clothes dryers, and pool pumps during the day when the solar system can directly contribute power.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Multiple Batteries<\/h2>\r\n<p>If 9.7 kilowatt-hours of energy storage isn&#8217;t enough, extra batteries can be installed.\u00a0 A Combiner Box will be required, which is an extra expense, and each one will allow up to three batteries to be connected to an inverter.\u00a0 If you&#8217;d rather use LG Chem batteries, the Combiner Box can be used with them.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60249 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_multiple.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge DC combiner box\" width=\"1000\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_multiple.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_multiple-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_multiple-768x385.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>I don&#8217;t have any information on the cost of the Combiner Box.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Efficiency<\/h2>\r\n<p>Round trip efficiency is how much energy gets lost between charging and discharging the battery.\u00a0 SolarEdge says for their battery it&#8217;s 93.3%.\u00a0 That&#8217;s high for a home battery system and is possible because it is DC coupled.\u00a0 The Tesla Powerwall 2 is AC coupled, which gives it the advantage of working with any solar inverter, but it&#8217;s only around 88% efficient. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>High efficiency is definitely good, but the most important thing for maximizing energy produced is to install as large a solar system as possible.\u00a0 A home will be much better off with one extra solar panel than an extra 5 percentage points of battery roundtrip efficiency.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Compatible Inverters<\/h2>\r\n<p>Backup power requires a SolarEdge Energy Hub single phase inverter <strong>and<\/strong> a Backup Box.\u00a0 The Backup Box is an additional expense.<\/p>\r\n<p>The battery can be used without backup with the SolarEdge HD-Wave Genesis and HD-Wave EV single-phase inverters.<\/p>\r\n<p>SolarEdge says it should also be possible to install their Home Battery with a SolarEdge 3\u03c6 (three-phase) Residential Inverter by the end of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60239 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_compatible.jpg\" alt=\"Compatible residential inverters\" width=\"1000\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_compatible.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_compatible-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_compatible-768x468.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Operating Temperature<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery&#8217;s operating temperature is from -10 to 50\u00baC.\u00a0 This is a good range for Australia because &#8212; at the moment &#8212; most towns and cities don&#8217;t go over 50\u00baC even in heatwaves.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But while this temperature range is good, there are there are places that are simply too hot for the SolarEdge battery.\u00a0 Its warranty will be void if installed where the ambient temperature<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solaredge-home-battery-review\/#en-60178-1' id='enref-60178-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60178)'>1<\/a><\/sup> exceeds 40 degrees for 5% or more of the warranty period.\u00a0 That&#8217;s around 18 days a year.\u00a0 This means you can&#8217;t install it Marble Bar in the shade or in a hot tin shed pretty much anywhere.\u00a0 At the moment, Alice Springs should be okay, but note the whole of Australia is getting hotter.<\/p>\r\n<p>The warranty will also be void if the ambient temperature is under 0 degrees for 5% or more of the warranty period, but outside of the Snowy mountains, this isn&#8217;t likely to be a problem in Australia.<span id=\"page29R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Unlike most battery systems, it can be stored for up to a year before use.\u00a0 Its temperature has to be below 30\u00baC for nine of those months, but being stored between 30 and 60 degrees for 3 months is okay.\u00a0 This makes stock management a lot easier for installers.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Noise<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery has no active cooling system and relies on natural convection.\u00a0 This just means natural air movement keeps it cool.\u00a0 Because there&#8217;s no active cooling, there&#8217;s no fan to make noise.\u00a0 SolarEdge says at one metre its noise emission is under 25 decibels.\u00a0 That&#8217;s whisper quiet.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Size &amp; Weight<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery weighs 121 kg and is 118cm high, 79cm across and 25cm deep.\u00a0 This picture gives an idea of its size:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60267\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60267\" class=\"wp-image-60267 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_size.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge Home Battery size\" width=\"1000\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_size.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_size-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_size-768x428.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These installers are just putting the plastic cover on. They aren&#8217;t casually lifting 121 kilograms. Image: SolarEdge<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Note that cabling and the backup box will take up additional space.\u00a0 This is often left out of promotional material that frequently shows batteries installed without the stuff that actually lets it work or, worse, shows it floating in space with &#8220;god rays&#8221; coming off it:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60244\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60244\" class=\"wp-image-60244 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_cabling.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge Home Battery installation\" width=\"580\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_cabling.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_cabling-300x282.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No cabling or backup box is visible in this promotional still. While it&#8217;s not impossible to hide cabling, it can significantly add to the cost of installation.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60245\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60245\" class=\"wp-image-60245 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_rays.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge battery for home use\" width=\"580\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_rays.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_rays-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rays coming off this white monolith indicate it must be the god of all batteries.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Installation<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery is IP55 rated.\u00a0 This means it is protected from dust and water, allowing it to be installed outside:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60247\" style=\"width: 1030px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60247\" class=\"wp-image-60247 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_ip.png\" alt=\"IP ratings\" width=\"1020\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_ip.png 1020w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_ip-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_ip-768x203.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While it says it&#8217;s protected from jets of water, I really recommend against hosing down your home battery otherwise, you may end up meeting <span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"es\">Jos\u00e9<\/span><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solaredge-home-battery-review\/#en-60178-2' id='enref-60178-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60178)'>2<\/a><\/sup> (Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brenclosures.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/BR-Enclosures_IP-Ratings-Chart.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B&amp;R Enclosures<\/a>).<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>While it can be installed outside, SolarEdge makes it very clear it should be installed out of direct sunlight whenever possible.\u00a0 This is because heat is bad for batteries.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The battery is normally wall-mounted, but can be ground-mounted.\u00a0 It comes with a wall mount, but ground installation will require the purchase of a separate floor mount: \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60250\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60250\" class=\"wp-image-60250 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_stand.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge Home Battery floor mounting\" width=\"1000\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_stand.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_stand-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_stand-768x417.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SolarEdge&#8217;s description of the floor mount is a bit confusing.\u00a0 One ground mount is required per battery.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t put four on one.\u00a0 Also, it&#8217;s not mandatory to mount it on the wall, that just means it comes with a wall-mount but you have to shell out for a floor mount.\u00a0 (I hope those batteries aren&#8217;t floor-mounted in direct sunlight.)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>All communication links can be wireless, which can make installation easier.\u00a0 But because sending electricity through the air is both scary and dangerous, electrical cabling will still be required.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>To allow for adequate cooling, the SolarEdge Home Battery requires a minimum of 20 cm clearance all around.\u00a0 This includes underneath when wall mounted.\u00a0 In addition to this, in Australia battery installations now require 60 cm clearance to the sides and 90 cm above<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solaredge-home-battery-review\/#en-60178-3' id='enref-60178-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60178)'>3<\/a><\/sup> and not be located inside &#8220;habitable&#8221; areas of a home.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Backup<\/h2>\r\n<p>When a blackout occurs the optional Blackout Box takes around three seconds to switch to battery power.<\/p>\r\n<p>In backup mode, the SolarEdge Home Battery can provide up to 5 kilowatts of power, the same as on-grid operation.\u00a0 If you have two batteries and a 10 kilowatt Energy Hub inverter, they can provide up to 10 kilowatts of backup power.<\/p>\r\n<p>The backup box can support up to three SolarEdge Energy Hub inverters, but each backup box can only supply backup power to a single phase.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>By the end of the year, SolarEdge says Backup Box will be able to support a generator of up to 17 kilowatts.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60266\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60266\" class=\"wp-image-60266 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_backup.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge backup interface\" width=\"1000\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_backup.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_backup-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_backup-768x419.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this graph, SolarEdge refers to it as a \u03c6 (single-phase) back-up interface, but at the launch SolarEdge just called it the Backup Box.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Like most home battery systems, it can be set to reserve some energy so you can make sure it won&#8217;t be completely flat if a blackout occurs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The Backup Box will allow the battery to charge from solar panels during a blackout if the home has single-phase power.\u00a0 Even if the battery is completely drained at night during a blackout, it will still retain enough power to automatically switch on and start charging when the sun rises.\u00a0 This is called black start capability.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>No information was given on the price of the backup box.\u00a0 I suspect it will add over $1,500 to the cost of installation.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Not Recommended For Off-Grid Use<\/h2>\r\n<p>The SolarEdge battery is not recommended for off-grid use.\u00a0 This is because it doesn&#8217;t have surge protection, which makes it difficult to cope with the inrush of current that often occurs when an electric motor starts.\u00a0 The sudden power draw can cause the battery system to trip and shut down.\u00a0 While the motors in modern fridges and freezers are generally not a problem, larger electric motors in air conditioners, washing machines, and clothes dryers may cause difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Warranty<\/h2>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solaredge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/se-energy-bank-battery-warranty-aus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SolarEdge Home Battery warranty<\/a><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solaredge-home-battery-review\/#en-60178-4' id='enref-60178-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60178)'>4<\/a><\/sup> is good compared to most home battery systems.[<em>Update 30th May 2022: Like many home battery systems the SolarEdge warranty requires an internet connection. The warranty makes no mention of how it is affected by disruptions to internet connectivity that will inevitably occur over a 10 year period.<\/em>]\u00a0 It&#8217;s 10 years with unlimited cycles and promises it will have at least 70% of its original capacity at the end of 10 years.\u00a0 Because there&#8217;s no limit to the number of cycles, the warranty will last a full decade.\u00a0 It also makes the battery a good choice if you know it&#8217;s likely to be used at high capacity.<\/p>\r\n<p>The warranty says the battery cannot be removed from its original location, but the warranty can be transferred from the original purchaser to another person, provided the battery stays where it is.<\/p>\r\n<p>I don&#8217;t have information on the warranty for the Backup Box or other components such as the connector box.\u00a0 While I hope their warranty length isn&#8217;t under 10 years, it would be worth checking if you&#8217;re considering buying one.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Battery Chemistry<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery has NMC lithium battery cells.\u00a0 The NMC stands for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithium_nickel_manganese_cobalt_oxides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide<\/a>.\u00a0 All else equal, this battery chemistry isn&#8217;t as safe as more commonly used <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lithium iron phosphate<\/a> batteries &#8212; also known as lithium ferro phosphate or <span class=\"chemf nowrap\">LiFePO<sub>4<\/sub><\/span> if you prefer letters and numbers &#8212; but battery systems aren&#8217;t built on the basis of all else being equal.\u00a0 No one just throws battery cells in a box and calls it a day.\u00a0 (If anyone does, you definitely shouldn&#8217;t buy that battery.)\u00a0 Battery safety depends on what kind of care and precautions have been taken with the entire system, and I strongly suspect SolarEdge has paid close attention to this.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Built-In Fire Extinguisher<\/h2>\r\n<p>The battery has temperature sensors and if it gets too hot it will send messages to SolarEdge and the homeowner saying there&#8217;s a problem.\u00a0 If the temperature rises too high the built-in fire extinguisher will activate and hopefully stop any combustion that may be occurring.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60255\" style=\"width: 818px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60255\" class=\"wp-image-60255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_fire.jpg\" alt=\"SolarEdge fire extinguisher\" width=\"808\" height=\"771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_fire.jpg 808w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_fire-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_fire-768x733.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 808px) 100vw, 808px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#8217;t worry, the installer will slot the fire extinguisher into the hole. You don&#8217;t have to stand there holding it.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potassium_nitrate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potassium nitrate<\/a> extinguisher that doesn&#8217;t use electronic temperature sensors and has a simple heat activated mechanism.\u00a0 Potassium nitrate is sometimes used as a food additive and isn&#8217;t very dangerous.\u00a0 I also suspect it will mostly be contained within the battery case if activated.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If the battery is overheating because there is a fault in the Battery Management System (BMS), the extinguisher will take it out and stop whatever it&#8217;s doing wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>UPDATE SEP 2024:<\/strong>\u00a0SolarEdge have advised the extinguisher is no longer included as <em>&#8220;we were informed that we were so far above the mandatory safety requirements the extinguisher wasn&#8217;t needed, so to simplify installation it was removed from that point on.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<h2>VPPs<\/h2>\r\n<p>SolarEdge says households with SolarEdge Home Batteries can join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/virtual-power-plants\/\">Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)<\/a> and they are currently in discussions with a variety of providers.\u00a0 Because the warranty has unlimited cycles, it will still last a full 10 years even if joining a VPP greatly increases battery use.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Battery Subsidies<\/h2>\r\n<p>SolarEdge said the battery should be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/rebates-subsidies\/\">state battery subsidies<\/a> in Victoria and South Australia.\u00a0 Once accepted in these states it&#8217;s likely to be accepted for any other state subsidies, such as in NSW.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Inverter Upgrades<\/h2>\r\n<p>SolarEdge is offering a special deal that will allow people with existing SolarEdge residential inverters to upgrade to an Energy Hub inverter at a reduced cost if they buy an the battery.\u00a0 This will also apply to people who currently have an Energy Hub but want to upgrade to a larger one.\u00a0 These will be new inverters with fresh warranties.\u00a0 Just how good the deals will be isn&#8217;t clear, but it will operate at the installer level and it&#8217;s up to them how they&#8217;ll pass it on to customers.<\/p>\r\n<h2>DC Coupling &amp; Inverter Limits<\/h2>\r\n<p>A DC-coupled battery, like the SolarEdge Home Battery, shares the solar inverter with the batteries.\u00a0 An AC coupled battery, such as the Tesla Powerwall 2, has its own built-in battery inverter.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Depending on where you are, the battery inverter in an AC coupled battery system can count towards the total amount of solar inverter capacity you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/grid-connection\/\">allowed to install<\/a>, which can be a major drawback.\u00a0 A DC-coupled inverter avoids this problem but requires the battery to be compatible with the solar inverter.\u00a0 This is why the SolarEdge Home Battery only works with specific SolarEdge inverters.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Additional Solar Panels<\/h2>\r\n<p>Generally, on-grid solar systems without batteries can only have a panel capacity that is up to 133% of the inverter capacity.\u00a0 But with a suitable solar inverter and DC coupled battery it&#8217;s possible to exceed this solar panel capacity limit.\u00a0 Installing a solar system with a SolarEdge Home Battery, or adding one to a suitable existing system can allow up to an extra 5 kilowatts of panel capacity to be added.\u00a0 If two batteries are installed, up to 10 kilowatts of extra panel capacity can be installed.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/rebate\/\">STCs<\/a>, which lower the cost of rooftop solar, can be claimed for the additional panel capacity.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60269 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_oversize.jpg\" alt=\"Adding extra solar panels\" width=\"1000\" height=\"795\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_oversize.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_oversize-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/se_oversize-768x611.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>This additional panel capacity can provide much greater savings on electricity bills and provide a better return on money invested than the battery.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If the solar panels produce more energy than the inverter capacity then, instead of being wasted as would be the case with an AC coupled battery, the surplus energy can be used to charge batteries if they&#8217;re not already at full capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>SolarEdge Home Battery Cost<\/h2>\r\n<p>SolarEdge did not reveal the price of their battery or Backup Box.\u00a0 They also didn&#8217;t say how much the floor mount or the combiner box for multiple batteries would cost. But a secret squirrel told me to expect to pay under $10,000 for one installed without backup.\u00a0 (If I&#8217;m wrong about this, let me know and secret squirrel will be in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uV7YJIUMIyA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">big trouble<\/a>.)<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>Update 3:17pm 29th March 2020:<\/strong>\u00a0 A source even more reliable than Secret Squirrel has told me the SolarEdge Home Battery is likely to have an installed price much higher than $10,000.\u00a0 Without backup or an inverter upgrade its installed cost is likely to be over $12,000.\u00a0 If an inverter upgrade is necessary, that will further increase the price.<\/em><sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solaredge-home-battery-review\/#en-60178-5' id='enref-60178-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60178)'>5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<h2>Economics<\/h2>\r\n<p>Given its secret squirrel price, the SolarEdge Home Battery is unlikely to pay for itself through savings on electricity bills alone.\u00a0 But if your electricity use is high, you find a suitable VPP and get a state battery subsidy, it&#8217;s possible you be able to come out ahead &#8212; depending on electricity prices and how long the battery lasts beyond its warranty. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But there are plenty of reasons to get a battery other than raw financial returns.
