the largest factory by volume in the world. <!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Given its name, I thought the shindig was a little shy of robots riding bucking broncos, but it was definitely interesting &#8212; provided you fast forward through the boring bits, which you can do below:<\/p>\r\n<p><div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"WATCH: Elon Musk&#039;s Cyber Rodeo Event - LIVE\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y2QSBdFfnRI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\r\n<p>Unlike the last time I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/elon-musk-resilience-day\/\">wrote about an Elon Musk rally<\/a>, this is not a joke.\u00a0 At least, it was no more of a joke than Elon intended it to be.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>On Friday &#8212; their Thursday &#8212; Tesla pulled off a real feat of organization and efficiency.\u00a0 Not only did they have a huge factory opening, but they also announced a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/tesla-to-recall-127785-model-3s-in-china-regulator-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recall of 127,785 Model 3 vehicles<\/a> in China.\u00a0 Now that&#8217;s what I call multi-tasking.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s also what I call sweeping bad news under the rug.<\/p>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s not Tesla&#8217;s largest recall, but the cost could come to hundreds of millions depending on how extensive repairs need to be.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not known if any Model 3 cars in Australia or other countries will be affected.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But at the Cyber Rodeo, the positive atmosphere wasn&#8217;t marred by any hint of bad news.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t hear a peep about&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The recall.<\/li>\r\n<li>The closure of Tesla&#8217;s Shanghai gigafactory due to COVID.<\/li>\r\n<li>Current sky-high prices for lithium and other commodities.<\/li>\r\n<li>Growing competition in the EV market.<\/li>\r\n<li>The fact a known bounty hunter was visible in the audience.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Instead, there was only good news and boundless opportunity, as large and as poorly regulated as Texas itself.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60786\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60786\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_boba.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_boba.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_boba-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_boba-768x442.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of these men is feared throughout the galaxy.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>The New Factory<\/h2>\r\n<p>The new Austin factory, or Gigafactory as Tesla calls it, because all the sillier names are already taken<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/elon-musk-cyber-rodeo\/#en-60673-1' id='enref-60673-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60673)'>1<\/a><\/sup>, will produce Model Y electric vehicles.\u00a0 According to Elon&#8217;s original plan, this was supposed to be a low-cost economy EV, but Tesla abandoned that idea long ago, and they are instead pricey electric SUVs.\u00a0 In Australia, the lowest cost version will apparently start at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexpert.com.au\/car-news\/2022-tesla-model-y-australian-pricing-leaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$68,000<\/a>, with fancier ones coming in at around $98,000.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>We were told the factory will also produce the much delayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-cybertruck-reveal\/\">Cybertruck<\/a> next year, but I wouldn&#8217;t hold my breath if you&#8217;re waiting for them in Australia &#8212; or even Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The new factory is in Austin, next to the Colorado River.\u00a0 Austin, as everyone knows, is the birthplace of Steve Austin &#8212; the 6 Million Dollar<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cRgqouS1O6E?t=98\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a0Man<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course, all that will get you in Texas these days is a hip replacement and a glass eye.<\/p>\r\n<h2>The Rodeo Begins&#8230; Slowly<\/h2>\r\n<p>The event&#8217;s live stream began with a countdown timer promising there were only 6 minutes and 48 seconds until it started.\u00a0 This was a lie.\u00a0 Once the timer ran down, we had to stare at a message saying &#8220;starting soon&#8221; for 38 seconds.\u00a0 I guess we&#8217;ll have to wait for technology to become far more advanced before we can accomplish feats such as starting a countdown timer 38 seconds earlier.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Chunks Of Info<\/h2>\r\n<p>While waiting for the timer to count down to the &#8220;starting soon&#8221; sign, we were treated to nuggety chunks of information superimposed over a promotional video.\u00a0 One of them was:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;15,000+ Superchargers in the U.S.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>That sounds impressive, and it is impressive.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the same as the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tesla_Supercharger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supercharger<\/a> locations.\u00a0 As of March 30th, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrapehero.com\/location-reports\/Tesla%20Superchargers-USA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,315 Tesla Supercharger locations<\/a> in the United States.\u00a0 Each averaging around a dozen Supercharger units.<\/p>\r\n<p>We were also told, over an image of a battery pack being made:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;With our new 4680 cells, we&#8217;re producing the industry&#8217;s first structural battery pack on site.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Tesla will produce battery cells on-site, but this isn&#8217;t the only place they&#8217;ll get them from.\u00a0 Panasonic says they will also produce the 4680 cells in <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/02\/28\/panasonic-start-tesla-4680-battery-cell-production-by-march-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple locations in Japan<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Over 70,000 solar panels will help provide the factory with power.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Notice the word &#8220;will&#8221; and were shown people playing games on the console monitor.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60747\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60747\" class=\"wp-image-60747 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_game.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Model Y immersive entertainment\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_game.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_game-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Call me old fashioned, but when I was a kid, you had to be at least eight before you could drive your parents home from the pub.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Also, according to one brief segment, the Model Y has the ability to transport you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q_LPJllaogU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toon Town<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60745\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60745\" class=\"wp-image-60745 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_matrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_matrix.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_matrix-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_matrix-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Either a mistake was made putting the video together, or their &#8220;immersive entertainment&#8221; is a lot more immersive than I expected.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s other information they gave on the Model Y, with relevant parts translated from stupid units into metric:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>0-97 km\/h in as little as 3.5 seconds.<\/li>\r\n<li>Drive up to 531 km on a single charge.\u00a0 (I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-model-3-review\/\">don&#8217;t believe<\/a> this one.)<\/li>\r\n<li>Plug-in anywhere &#8212; over a video showing an EV charger and a normal US powerpoint being used.<\/li>\r\n<li>Or recharge up to 322 km in just 15 minutes.\u00a0 (A very rapid rate.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Note the words &#8220;as little&#8221; and &#8220;up to&#8221;.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll have to spend &#8220;up to&#8221; $100,000 for them to apply.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Tesla Model Y, like the Model 3, has a glass roof.\u00a0 This is not so great for Australia, but some may like it.\u00a0 It could be acceptable in Melbourne, appreciated in Tasmania, and is sure to be a hit at Mawson Station.<\/p>\r\n<p>They also flashed up some information on the Cybertruck, but I don&#8217;t see any point in repeating it until there&#8217;s actually a chance of them showing up here.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>The Rodeo Begins&#8230; the first vehicle Tesla produced &#8212; onto a stage.\u00a0 He emerged dressed all in black like some sort of billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GCMz70Fm5pA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Johnny Cash<\/a>.\u00a0 The part of the presentation I&#8217;d been waiting for &#8212; actual words from a human being&#8217;s head &#8212; was underway.<\/p>\r\n<p>But, as his presentation was only 25 minutes and mostly consisted of Musk speaking very slowly with long pauses for cheering from the crowd, there wasn&#8217;t a lot of substance.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Translation Note<\/h2>\r\n<p>I&#8217;m going to quote Musk&#8217;s more important points below, but I will edit them for clarity so they make sense.\u00a0 This is because, in public, Elon Musk only speaks the hard to understand English dialect called Disjointed. \u00a0Let me know if you think he was trying to say something other than what I wrote down.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Achievement Showcase<\/h2>\r\n<p>After a rock star style introduction, Elon said:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to talk about past, present, and future.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>As soon as I heard this, I thought &#8212; thank god!\u00a0 At last, someone will give these Americans an English lesson and they&#8217;ll finally learn how to pronounce &#8220;aluminium&#8221;.\u00a0 But it was not to be, and he instead started talking about Tesla&#8217;s accomplishments.\u00a0 It seems there have been quite a few of these:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to the incredible work of the Tesla team, two-thirds of the electric vehicles in the United States are all made by Tesla.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>I was going to let this statement slide without fact-checking it, but then I reminded myself this was Tesla.\u00a0 I quickly looked it up and saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/26\/americans-are-buying-teslas-not-evs-heres-why-thats-about-to-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">79% of EVs<\/a> sold in the US in 2020 were Teslas, so I assume it&#8217;s more or less correct.<\/p>\r\n<p>Judging by the cheers whenever he said the words &#8220;Tesla team&#8221;, there were a lot of workers in the crowd, as you&#8217;d expect at a factory opening.<\/p>\r\n<p>Elon went on to say:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;We have full self-driving in beta.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>What?\u00a0 Maybe you mean you have full self-driving on a planet around Beta Centauri because you sure as hell don&#8217;t have it here on earth!\u00a0 Maybe he meant to say, &#8220;We have full self-aggrandizement in practice.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I really wish Elon Musk would repudiate his continual calumnies concerning self-driving.\u00a0 It&#8217;s going to get someone killed&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60767\" style=\"width: 872px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60767\" class=\"wp-image-60767 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_selfdieev.jpg\" alt=\"Self-driving comic\" width=\"862\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_selfdieev.jpg 862w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_selfdieev-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_selfdieev-768x486.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smbc-comics.com\/comic\/fsd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full comic here<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>&#8230;in addition to the people it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/08\/16\/1028063414\/the-u-s-is-formally-investigating-tesla-over-its-autopilot-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may have<\/a> already killed.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Self-driving cars are a thing.\u00a0 They do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/30\/waymo-self-driving-experience-mostly-peaceful-and-productive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exist and operate<\/a> under a restricted set of conditions.\u00a0 But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_AU\/support\/autopilot\">Tesla doesn&#8217;t sell any<\/a> at the moment.\u00a0 While Musk claims the Tesla EVs of those who paid extra for &#8220;full self-driving capability&#8221; will become fully autonomous at an unspecified point in the future, it won&#8217;t be Elon Musk who decides when you no longer have to pay attention to the road in this country.\u00a0 It will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructure.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Communications<\/a>, located in the Profoundly Boring Building in Canberra.<\/p>\r\n<p>Musk spent a fair bit of time talking about this thing that doesn&#8217;t exist yet &#8212; at least not for people who think the phrase &#8220;full self-driving&#8221; has meaning beyond whatever Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/12608-when-i-use-a-word-humpty-dumpty-said-in-rather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chooses it to be<\/a>.\u00a0 Then he said this was Tesla&#8217;s sixth major factory, and the Texas Gigafactory was now Tesla&#8217;s global headquarters. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>While he didn&#8217;t specifically say this was because he thought cowboys could beat ninjas in a fight, given his cowboy hat, that was my impression.\u00a0 Of course, as many of Tesla&#8217;s battery cells come from Japan, this could be exactly what ninjas want us to think. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Musk then made the point the Texas Gigafactory was the largest factory in the world by volume:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;According to our calculations you could fit 194 billion hamsters in this building.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>The screen flashed up a simple layout of the factory behind Elon:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_60772\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60772\" class=\"wp-image-60772 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_map.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Gigafactory Texas layout\" width=\"1000\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_map.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_map-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_map-768x295.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Well, what do you know? Cyber Rodeo\" width=\"1000\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_rising.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_rising-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rodeo_rising-768x419.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-60794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The land of the rising Cybertruck.\u00a0 (Be sure to get a photo with your phone, everybody.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not like there&#8217;s any chance of images showing up on the internet.)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Musk said&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Who needs handles?\u00a0 The car can just tell that you&#8217;re there and knows it needs to open.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>This makes me fervently hope that if I ever own a Cybertruck, no one ever tries to find out the minimum amount of Ronald required to open the door.<\/p>\r\n<p>It also made me wonder how people will get you out of a Cybertruck after a crash.\u00a0 Will it know you are dying and hand bystanders a pry bar? \u00a0Little details like this make me think the Cybertruck won&#8217;t be roadworthy in Australia any time soon.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The presentation then finished with Elon getting in the Cybertruck and driving off while Beethoven&#8217;s 8th symphony played and fireworks exploded in the sky above the factory<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/elon-musk-cyber-rodeo\/#en-60673-2' id='enref-60673-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60673)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Elon&#8217;s Unmentionables<\/h2>\r\n<p>While no mention was made of unpleasant things such as Model 3 recalls and COVID related factory closures, I really wasn&#8217;t expecting anything along those lines.\u00a0 I did get what I expected &#8212; a huge helping of optimism the size of Texas. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If you believe everything Elon Musk says you&#8217;re a fool, but if you don&#8217;t want EV production to ramp up to replace internal combustion engine vehicles, you&#8217;re also a fool<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/elon-musk-cyber-rodeo\/#en-60673-3' id='enref-60673-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(60673)'>3<\/a><\/sup>.
