expenditures down or provide an overall credit on your electricity bills.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>This article will tell how much the average household can expect to save by installing solar in each Australian capital.\u00a0 What&#8217;s more, I&#8217;ll give you the tools you can use to estimate your solar energy savings and help you find the best retail electricity plan.<\/p>\r\n<p>Specifically, these two tools:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The SolarQuotes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar-calculator\/\">Solar &amp; Battery Calculator<\/a>, and&#8230;<\/li>\r\n<li>The SolarQuotes Electricity Retailer Plan Comparison Page<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>UPDATE May 27:<\/strong> Apologies, but the Electricity Retailer Comparison page has been taken offline for maintenance and some re-jiggering.<\/p>\r\n<h2>We&#8217;ve Worked Hard On Our Tools<\/h2>\r\n<p>While we&#8217;ve had these tools for a long time, they&#8217;ve recently had a significant overhaul, so they will work with time-of-use tariffs and not just flat tariffs as in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Some very clever people here at SolarQuotes did the upgrades.\u00a0 So, no, I wasn&#8217;t involved.<\/p>\r\n<h2>We&#8217;re Still Working On Them<\/h2>\r\n<p>We&#8217;ve made big improvements to our tools, but changes can introduce new problems, both big and small, so we can&#8217;t promise that the results will always be perfect, or they&#8217;ll always find the best electricity plan available.\u00a0 What we will do is make them work as well as we can.\u00a0 You can go.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>The Solar &amp; Battery Calculator &#8211; Adelaide<\/h2>\r\n<p>Adelaide is Australia&#8217;s premier state capital &#8212; according to the alphabet.\u00a0 For this reason, as roof is actually 15 degree, it will make very little difference to the result.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>You can add information for more than one array of panels to get accurate results if there will be exceptional.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t look into the costs and benefits of installing a battery today.<\/p>\r\n<p>You can add the total cost of the solar power system:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" add the default values for a typical home with a north facing solar system in your area.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to go through any more effort than clicking on &#8220;Calculate Savings&#8221; at the bottom of the page if you don&#8217;t want to and are happy with &#8220;typical&#8221; results.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Adelaide Results<\/h2>\r\n<p>If I simply enter an Adelaide postcode and leave everything else on the default values, then it will give me the first year of electricity bill savings and the simple payback period for a 6.6 kilowatt north facing solar power system that costs $6,600:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61981 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cost_calc11.png\" alt=\"Solar calculator&#8217;s fault.\u00a0 Electricity retailers often make their plans confusing and often try to include sneaky conditions to rip people off.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>For example, for Adelaide the a plan, check that it&#8217;s suitable for you, and then &#8212; if you want to be thorough &#8212; you can check if you can select it in our Solar &amp; Battery Calculator for a detailed breakdown of the savings it provides. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Alternatively, you may find that just checking the retailer comparison page is enough to decide which plan you want.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Electricity Retailer having to spend entire seconds using the Retailer Plan Comparison Page to be an excessive amount of effort, but these seconds can be very worthwhile.\u00a0 For an Adelaide household with average electricity consumption, the difference between the estimate annual cost of the cheapest and most expensive plans available to all homes with 6.6 kilowatt solar systems comes to $896.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what the estimated annual electricity bills look like:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-62040\" July<\/h2>\r\n<p>Electricity retailers usually change their plans in July.\u00a0 While they can change from the 1st of July, it may take several weeks for all their new offers to appear.\u00a0 It will depend on what type of plan you have, but it is common for retailers to either raise what they charge or not pass on price decreases at this point.\u00a0 So I recommend checking if there is a better plan available towards the end of July.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Solar Power System Cost<\/h2>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ll now calculate the first-year savings from installing a 6.6 kilowatt solar system in every capital and its simple payback period.\u00a0 This is the number of years it will take to pay for itself.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called simple, because it doesn&#8217;t include capital costs.\u00a0 Because these vary between individuals, you&#8217;ll have to work out your own estimate if you want to add them in.<\/p>\r\n<p>To work out the simple payback period, I&#8217;ll need to know the cost of the solar system.\u00a0 The default value the Solar &amp; Battery Calculator uses for solar is a straight $1,000 per kilowatt of capacity.\u00a0 This makes a 6.6 kilowatt system $6,600.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>While getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/cheapsystems.html\">cheapest solar system you can find is a bad idea<\/a>, it&#8217;s possible to get a reliable solar power system from installers we trust who do quality work for less.\u00a0 Because I&#8217;m writing this article for people concerned about the cost of living, I&#8217;m going to use a price that&#8217;s 9% lower than the default and assume a 6.6 kilowatt system is bought for $6,000.<\/p>\r\n<p>Using the same price in every capital overlooks regional variation &#8212; the average cost of solar systems is higher in Darwin and Hobart and lower in Perth &#8211;, but I&#8217;ll stick to it for simplicity so we can compare the capitals.<\/p>\r\n<h2>How Much Should I Spend On Solar?<\/h2>\r\n<p>How much you spend on a system depends on your budget and preference.\u00a0 If you have a ton of money, I recommend getting as large a system as will fit on your roof with top of the line hardware, including solar panels with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/panels-25-year-warranties\/\">product warranty of 25 years<\/a> or more. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If your budget is limited, then I still suggest getting as large a system as will reasonably fit on your roof while still getting a reliable system from an installer who does quality work.\u00a0 We will only refer you to installers who provide Solar &amp; Battery Calculator &#8212; if the information provided after clicking the &#8220;link&#8221; symbol indicates it&#8217;s available to all households with a 6.6 kilowatt solar system and it appears to be an honest plan without provisions designed to screw people over.<\/li>\r\n<li>Leave everything else at its default setting.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>This gives the following first year to double check if any special conditions were limiting its availability, but I did not see any. Still &#8211; I&#8217;m sceptical &#8211; so if anyone switched to this plan &#8211; please triple check you&#8217;ll get this feed-in-rate, and let me know how you go.<\/p>\r\n<p>The capital with the lowest first year savings is Perth.\u00a0 This is due to Perth&#8217;s unfairly low feed-in tariff.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Solar System Simple Payback Period<\/h2>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s a graph of the simple payback time, assuming the system cost $6,000:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62093 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cost_calc30.png\" alt=\"Simple payback period on 6.6kW solar - Australian capital cities\" width=\"952\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cost_calc30.png 952w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cost_calc30-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cost_calc30-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>These simple payback periods assume the electricity plans stay the same.\u00a0 It also assumes the solar feed-in tariff will drop by one cent per year if it is above 6 cents.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>As you can see, the simple payback time is under five and a half years in every capital, with the best being in Sydney.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The second best is potentially in Melbourne at three years.\u00a0 This is indicated by the light blue segment on the graph and is possible with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/victorian-solar-rebate.html\">Solar Victoria panel rebate<\/a> of up to $1,400.\u00a0 This is currently available to the majority of households without solar panels.\u00a0 The next shortest payback period in Adelaide, is due to a combination of high grid electricity prices and a good feed-in tariff.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The longest payback period, at 5.4 years, is in Hobart.\u00a0 This is understandable, thanks to it having the lowest solar electricity output of pretty much anywhere in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Less understandable for most is why Perth has the second longest payback period when it has more sunshine than any other capital.\u00a0 This due to its unfairly low feed-in tariff.\u00a0 Fortunately for Perth people, the cost of solar power is lower than anywhere else, so it is possible to get good quality solar for less than the figure used here.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Go Bigger<\/h2>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ve looked at installing a 6.6 kilowatts because they&#8217;ll generally fit on all but the smallest roofs these days.\u00a0 But, if you have room for more &#8212; and you&#8217;re not in Western Australia where homes with more than 6.66 kilowatts of solar panels won&#8217;t receive any feed-in tariff &#8212; then I recommend going larger where possible.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/10kw\/\">10 kilowatt solar system<\/a> is 52% larger than a 6.6 kilowatt one but generally costs much less than 50% more.\u00a0 In most situations, the extra capacity will pay for itself, and it will help future proof the home for when a home battery or electric car is bought.<\/p>\r\n<h2>A Worthwhile Investment<\/h2>\r\n<p>An investment of $6,000 that&#8217;s likely to save the typical household $1,000 or more a year is an excellent deal as far as I&#8217;m concerned.\u00a0 The cost of electricity may not rise in the future, but if it does you&#8217;ll be at least partially protected from increases in the cost of living with solar panels on your roof.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The only better investment I can think of is paying back money you&#8217;ve borrowed from the mafia &#8212; although that&#8217;s more about the cost of not living. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Personally, I don&#8217;t think the mild inflation we&#8217;ve had lately is anything to worry about.\u00a0 This is because it was a far higher 15% when I was younger.\u00a0 Old people like me have a term for that period.\u00a0 We refer to it as, &#8220;the good old days&#8221;.\u00a0 The reason why they weren&#8217;t miserable was because &#8212; for the most part &#8212; people&#8217;s wages grew faster than inflation.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s not modest inflation we need to worry about, it&#8217;s incomes not keeping up. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;m writing this on Saturday morning, so our odds of having &#8220;good new days&#8221; or &#8220;not-so-good new days&#8221; depends on how people decide to vote.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><em><strong>Footnote<\/strong>: We have released a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/calculator\/\">battery calculator<\/a>\u00a0which focuses specifically on the savings of adding a battery to your existing solar panel system.
