{"id":63345,"date":"2022-07-11T06:23:42","date_gmt":"2022-07-10T19:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=63345"},"modified":"2023-11-23T13:36:35","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T04:06:35","slug":"neighbourhood-batteries-study-mb2547","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/neighbourhood-batteries-study-mb2547\/","title":{"rendered":"Neighbourhood Batteries: Sharing The Power (And Knowledge)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/neighbourhood-batteries.jpg\" alt=\"Neighbourhood batteries study\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/neighbourhood-batteries.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/neighbourhood-batteries-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/neighbourhood-batteries-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/neighbourhood-batteries-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Victorian study has produced a guide to developing neighbourhood batteries as community assets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Not everyone can afford (or may even want) a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">home battery<\/a>, but neighbourhood batteries can help everyone benefit from renewable energy &#8211; whether they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a> installed or not.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbourhood batteries generally charge up during the day when there is lower electricity demand and\/or surplus solar electricity production, discharging in the evenings &#8211; or at other times when there&#8217;s an opportunity to make a buck.<\/p>\n<p>Among the benefits and opportunities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emissions reduction.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/neighbourhood-batteries-study-mb2547\/#en-63345-1' id='enref-63345-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(63345)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Helping to keep locally generated solar energy local.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting more solar power system installations within a neighbourhood.<\/li>\n<li>Improving local electricity supply reliability and resilience<\/li>\n<li>Helping to manage peak demand and peak solar electricity production.<\/li>\n<li>Generating income from wholesale energy trading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These batteries can be owned by networks, communities, local government or other participants in the energy market.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a lot of chatter around community batteries, particularly since Federal Labor made them a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/albanese-climate-australia-mb2484\/\">focus in election promises<\/a> and now- Federal Climate Change and Energy Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/chris-bowen-climate-energy-mb2498\/\">Chris Bowen<\/a> started pledging them to specific communities soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Victorian distributed network service provider (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/grid-connection\/vic\/\">DNSP<\/a>) Powercor received funding from the Victorian Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/community-power-batteries-mb1891\/\"> Neighbourhood Battery Initiative<\/a> to lead a feasibility study into community batteries. Powercor worked with fellow distributors CitiPower and United Energy along with a dozen councils, community energy and greenhouse alliances on the Electric Avenue Feasibility Study.<\/p>\n<p>The study looked at regions across nearly two-thirds of Victoria in order to identify 30 preferred locations for neighbourhood batteries &#8211; one of those we mentioned recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tarneit-neighbourhood-battery-mb2508\/\">is in Tarneit<\/a>. Of the 30 preferred locations identified, 17 have the potential to be feasible based on their ability to address electricity distribution constraints and could collectively service more than 6,000 customers. 13 sites could support community objectives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe reality is with the scale and speed of the transformation towards a clean energy future, all of these types of neighbourhood battery projects are needed,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powercor.com.au\/media-and-resources\/media-centre\/powercor-releases-study-into-feasibility-of-neighbourhood-batteries\/\">said<\/a> Powercor Head of Network Strategy and Non-Network Solutions, Greg Hannan. \u201cThey perform a distinct function within a localised community which is quite different to the role of either household batteries or big batteries supplying larger populations, but certainly complementary.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Community Batteries Make For Powerful Neighbours, But &#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>The study also revealed learnings, insights and ideas that may support other communities interested in a neighbourhood battery.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion notes neighbourhood battery projects are &#8220;highly contextual&#8221; &#8211; not easily scalable and the model used in one neighbourhood is not necessarily transferable to another. The design and implementation for each project will be specific to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the use case, such as existing network constraints needing to be fixed to enable more solar installations.<\/li>\n<li>the business model and ownership structure &#8211; who pays, and who reaps the financial benefits.<\/li>\n<li>the public\/community impacts &#8211; aesthetics and land use. The report notes neighbourhood batteries could be as small as 30kW (so minimal land use), but up 5 megawatts capacity. Even at the upper end, it&#8217;s still a small physical footprint.
