Fronius Australia launched their Wattpilot EV charger last week.\u00a0 Last week we were told it would be available here &#8220;in a couple of weeks&#8221;.\u00a0 A surprisingly imprecise period of time, given they are Austrian.<!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Some major Wattpilot points are&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>There are three versions.\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>11 kW\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>22 kW \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>22 kW with a plug &#8211; so it&#8217;s portable<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>All Wattpilots can be wired as single or 3-phase.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Confusingly the 11 kW version will only charge at a maximum of 3.68 kW if it is on a single phase.<\/li>\r\n<li>If you only have single-phase you must buy the 22 kW version to charge at 7 kW<\/li>\r\n<li>The chargers can go as low as 1.38 kW &#8211; handy for scavenging surplus solar electricity.<\/li>\r\n<li>Most electric vehicles in Australia are limited to 16 kW AC or less.<\/li>\r\n<li>They can do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/solar\/\">smart solar charging<\/a> if you have a Fronius solar inverter and smart meter.<\/li>\r\n<li>They are OCPP 1.6 compatible<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-1' id='enref-65552-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>1<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>They come with an ID fob so only you can charge.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>You can buy up to 10 different ID fobs, allowing multiple users.<\/li>\r\n<li>The 22 kW version is around $1,800 not including installation.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>It does not come with a charging cable.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The Wattpilot only has a two-year warranty despite Fronius&#8217; reputation for making reliable electronics.\u00a0 While this is similar to other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/\">EV chargers<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t make the Wattpilot&#8217;s warranty good.\u00a0 It simply means they all have shithouse warranties<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-2' id='enref-65552-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>2<\/a><\/sup>. See my other post for a deep dive into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-warranty\/\">Wattpilot&#8217;s warranty<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ll explain the Wattpilot versions below. I&#8217;ll explain everything in terms even I can comprehend.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_65798\" style=\"width: 1009px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65798\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_wrong.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"999\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_wrong.jpg 999w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_wrong-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_wrong-768x460.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Young man, don&#8217;t make me tell you again!\u00a0 Put the steering wheel back on the correct side of the car this instant!&#8221; <em>Image: Fronius<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Wattpilot Home 11J &#8212; 11 Kilowatts<\/h2>\r\n<p>The wimpiest version of Wattpilot is the &#8216;Home 11J&#8217;. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If you have single-phase this variant will only charge at a maximum of 3.68 kW.<\/p>\r\n<p>That&#8217;s too slow. <strong>Do not buy this variant if you only have single-phase.\u00a0<\/strong>Buy the 22 kW version instead.<\/p>\r\n<p>It can supply 11 kW if wired to 3-phase, half what the other two can. But this often won&#8217;t be a drawback because there are many situations an EV can&#8217;t charge at 11 kW no matter which Wattpilot is used.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>These include:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Many electric vehicles can only charge at 11 kilowatts or less because they are limited by their onboard AC chargers<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-4' id='enref-65552-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>4<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 (Note most electric cars can charge much faster if a large DC rapid charger is used &#8212; but you&#8217;ll have a hard time installing one of these at home.)<\/li>\r\n<li>Some homes may be limited in how much power they can reliably supply due to wiring or grid connection limits.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>The charger cable used can be a limiting factor. If you want to charge at more than 7.3 kW, you need a 3-phase cable as well as a 3-phase charger and, of course, a 3-phase supply.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>If you have 3-phase power I recommend the 22 kW Wattpilot, even if your EV can only charge at 11 kW or less.\u00a0 There are a couple of reasons why:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>\u00a0So you&#8217;ll be ready if you get a car that can charge faster in the future.<\/li>\r\n<li>A friend with a faster-charging EV may visit.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>The advantage of the 11 kW Wattpilot is it&#8217;s likely to be a little cheaper. \u00a0Normally, I&#8217;d recommend people be careful with their money, but if you can afford a new EV, you can afford a few hundred bucks extra for a 22 kW capable charger.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_65799\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65799\" class=\"wp-image-65799 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_close_up.jpg\" alt=\"Fronius Wattpilot design\" width=\"1000\" height=\"805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_close_up.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_close_up-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_close_up-768x618.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wattpilot is such a marvel of design it looks like a plastic tear shed by an Austrian robot god. <em>Image: Fronius<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Wattpilot Home 22J &#8212; 22 Kilowatts<\/h2>\r\n<p>The 22J can charge at 7.3 kW on single-phase and 22kW on 3-phase. As small size is important for the portable version, you&#8217;d think they&#8217;d make a bigger deal out of it. All three versions have identical dimensions. <em>Image: Fronius<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Ingress Protection<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Wattpilot&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IP_code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingress Protection<\/a> rating is IP55<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-5' id='enref-65552-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>5<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 This allows it to be installed outside.\u00a0 When the charging cable is connected, Ingress Protection rating drops to IP44.\u00a0 This means it should be safe to use when it&#8217;s raining, but don&#8217;t go hosing it down when it&#8217;s in use.\u00a0 Or any other time, for that matter.\u00a0 It&#8217;s bad luck to hose EV chargers no matter what their IP rating.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Not Included: A Charging Cable<\/h2>\r\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t come with a cable that connects the charger to the vehicle.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll have to get a &#8216;Type 2 to Type 2&#8217; cable yourself and they start at $250.\u00a0 If you have a 22 kW Wattpilot, ensure it&#8217;s a 22 kW, 3-phase cable.\u00a0 A 5-metre cable weighs around 2.4 kg, which is more than the Wattpilot Go.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Included: 1 ID Chip<\/h2>\r\n<p>Every Wattpilot comes with a little plastic fob that contains an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radio-frequency_identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RFID<\/a> chip.\u00a0 You can put it on your keyring and use it to unlock the Wattpilot so others can&#8217;t use it.\u00a0 Up to 10 different chips can be used with a single Wattpilot, but if you want more one, you&#8217;ll have to order them.\u00a0 Many people won&#8217;t bother with this feature, as it&#8217;s unlikely strangers will drive up to your charger and steal electricity.\u00a0 Despite this, I think it should come with two chips, as most cars have more than one main driver.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"accordion__panel\">\r\n<div class=\"accordion__content\">\r\n<div class=\"text\" data-component-anchor-id=\"anc_\">\r\n<div class=\"text-wrap \">If more than one ID chip is used, it will track electricity consumption for each separately.\u00a0 If desired, a business or block of flats could use these to share access to a single Wattpilot and charge people according to use.\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_65779\" style=\"width: 998px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65779\" class=\"wp-image-65779 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_rfid.jpg\" alt=\"Wattpilot authentication via RFID\" width=\"988\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_rfid.jpg 988w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_rfid-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_rfid-768x408.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slide: Fronius<\/p><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Fronius Wattpilot Smart Features<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Wattpilot has some &#8220;smart&#8221; features, but they can only be used with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/fronius-review.html\">Fronius solar inverter<\/a> and smart meter.\u00a0 It can work with older Fronius inverters, so it&#8217;s not necessary to have the latest GEN24 inverter.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_65674\" style=\"width: 964px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65674\" class=\"wp-image-65674 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_gen24.jpg\" alt=\"Fronius GEN24 inverter\" width=\"954\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_gen24.jpg 954w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_gen24-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_gen24-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is a badly photoshopped picture of a Fronius Gen24 that makes it look bloody enormous.\u00a0 What they did get right is the wistful sadness in the eyes of the permed man as he realizes that, unlike earlier models, the fan is much slower and quieter and no longer doubles as a hair dryer. <em>Image: Fronius<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>You will also need an internet connection, because the Wattpilot comms are entirely wireless.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you are not going to make use of any of the smart features, you could get a cheaper dumb EV charger.\u00a0 But if a Fronius Wattpilot is what you want, don&#8217;t let me stop you.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ll briefly cover two of its smart features:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>PV surplus charging, and&#8230;<\/li>\r\n<li>Scheduling.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>It, of course, has an app.\u00a0 Since we&#8217;re almost at the point where sausages at the supermarket have an app, I probably don&#8217;t need to mention this.<\/p>\r\n<h2>PV Surplus Charging<\/h2>\r\n<p>With a Fronius inverter and smart meter, the Wattpilot allows PV surplus charging.\u00a0 This will charge your EV with your excess solar electricity.<\/p>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s not perfect, as it requires your solar power system to be exporting at least 1.38 kW before it activates. \u00a0But it&#8217;s a lot more perfect than some other 3-phase chargers that have a minimum charging power closer to 4 kW.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Fronius cleverly switches to 1-phase charging below 4.14 kW so you can take advantage of surplus solar power down to 1.38 kW.<\/p>\r\n<p>Without this feature, 3-phase chargers would not be able to use the light green area in the slide below.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_65781\" style=\"width: 1058px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65781\" class=\"wp-image-65781 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_pv_surplus.jpg\" alt=\"Fronius Wattpilot PV surplus charging\" width=\"1048\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_pv_surplus.jpg 1048w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_pv_surplus-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_pv_surplus-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wattpilot_pv_surplus-768x395.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1048px) 100vw, 1048px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-65781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note those crazy Austrians like to use commas instead of decimal points, so that&#8217;s 1.38 kW. <em>Slide: Fronius<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Scheduling<\/h2>\r\n<p>In Europe, the Wattpilot can automatically take advantage of some dynamic electricity tariffs, and for example, charge when electricity is below a certain price, or negative.<\/p>\r\n<p>This feature is not available as a Fronius-supported feature in Australia, but you could use the ChargeHQ<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-6' id='enref-65552-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>6<\/a><\/sup> app with Amber Electric to achieve the same outcome. Or if you are on a standard time-of-use tariff, you can manually schedule charging to be at off-peak or super-off-peak times via the app.<\/p>\r\n<h2>I don&#8217;t see the point of the 11 kW version<\/h2>\r\n<p>Anyone saving a few bucks buying the 11 kW variant is likely to be disappointed.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>If you have single-phase, and buy the 11J you&#8217;ll be really pissed off that your 3.68 charge rate is not really better than a 15A socket.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you have 3-phase, you&#8217;ll be sad when you buy a future EV that can AC charge at more than 11 kW but is limited by the charger.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you want to buy a Wattpilot &#8211; buy the 22J.<\/p>\r\n<h2>OCPP Compatible<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Wattpilot is OCPP compatible. That&#8217;s good news if third-party apps or devices want to talk to it to control and coordinate charging.<\/p>\r\n<h2>A Longer Warranty Is Warranted<\/h2>\r\n<p>I&#8217;d expect an EV charger made by Fronius to be reliable, but Fronius seems to have less confidence in their work than I do. \u00a0They only give a two-year warranty.\u00a0 I understand EV chargers are fairly new, but if you can&#8217;t trust Austrians to make reliable electronics, who can you trust<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-review\/#en-65552-7' id='enref-65552-7' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(65552)'>7<\/a><\/sup>?<\/p>\r\n<p>If Fronius isn&#8217;t prepared to beat their competition with at least a five-year warranty, they should go back to the drawing board and come up with a design they&#8217;re confident will last.\u00a0 If they&#8217;re not willing to do that, they should petition to change their country&#8217;s name to &#8220;Fake Austria&#8221; if it&#8217;s not going to live up to its reputation for quality manufacturing.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p><em>This post was updated on 29 September 2022 to <strong>a)<\/strong> explain that the 11 kW version can only charge at a maximum of 3.68 kW with a single-phase supply and <strong>b)<\/strong> add that the Wattpilot has OCPP compatibility.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have good news if you want to charge an electric vehicle with Austrian technology.
