The idea is surplus renewable energy is used to power Energy Vault\u2019s electric motor\/generator lift\/crane system to elevate the bricks into position, which &#8220;charges&#8221; the battery. When energy is required, the bricks are control-released, generating electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Energy Vault Resiliency Center (EVRC) Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) concept:<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Energy Vault: Gravity Energy Storage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dQSOj-LfaSE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>While the company has racked up a number of agreements to date, to the best of my knowledge there isn&#8217;t an Energy Vault GESS\u00a0 in commercial operation anywhere yet, and the concepts have been met with a degree of skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>But the company also offers short duration energy storage (SDES) solutions, which are designed for projects requiring up to 4 hours of storage capacity using various storage technologies including lithium-ion based batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Vault announced yesterday it had received a Notice of Award from Meadow Creek Solar Pty Ltd\u00a0 for the deployment of a 250MW\/500MWh battery energy storage system at the 330MW Meadow Creek Solar Farm near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/location\/glenrowan-3675-vic\/\">Glenrowan<\/a> in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>This solar farm is a bit of a mystery &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t find any further information on it apart from a couple of mentions of connection enquiries\/applications with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) last year. While some of the wording in the announcement from Energy Vault indicates Meadow Creek Solar Farm is operational, the project appears to be still at the feasibility stage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; The Meadow Creek Solar Farm, Hybrid Solar PV and BESS Developments goals are well met with the market release of Energy Vault\u2019s AC and DC block bespoke energy storage solutions for the Australian market,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20221026005391\/en\/Energy-Vault-Issued-Notice-of-Award-From-Meadow-Creek-Solar-Farm-for-a-250MW500MWh-Grid-connected-Battery-in-Victoria-Australia\">said Energy Vault&#8217;s Lucas Sadler<\/a>. &#8221; Importantly, this award builds on the significant progress Energy Vault has made over the past year as we bring our transformative energy storage solutions to this important market.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Energy Vault And Australia&#8217;s Sun Metals<\/h2>\n<p>Should the Meadows Creek Solar Farm project proceed, it may not be the first Energy Vault installation in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Korea Zinc Co. Ltd announced\u00a0 an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/sun-metals-energy-vault-mb2308\/\"> investment of $US50 million<\/a> in Energy Vault. Korea Zinc Co is the parent company of Ark Energy and Sun Metals Corporation. Sun Metals operates Queensland\u2019s biggest zinc refinery and is aiming to be one of the first in the world to produce \u201cgreen\u201d zinc using renewables.\u00a0 Early last year, sister company Ark Energy was established by Korea Zinc to decarbonise the energy supply of the group; starting out with Sun Metals.<\/p>\n<p>Ark Energy announced in December last year it was to acquire\u00a0 Australian utility-scale wind and solar energy developer Epuron Holdings Pty Ltd. The acquisition was completed in May this year.<\/p>\n<p>According to Energy Vault, Ark Energy is working with the company on the initial planning of &#8220;multi-GWh&#8221;\u00a0 long and short duration energy storage projects to support Sun Metals. Sun Metals has a target of 100% renewables by 2040 and an interim goal of 80% by 2030.
