The state&#8217;s tiny quantity of hydroelectric generation is not shown, as its output is similar to a single wind turbine&#8217;s.\u00a0 (Image: AEMO)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Wind and solar power together account for 63% of generation.\u00a0 The state&#8217;s batteries are almost entirely charged with renewable electricity, so it may be reasonable to bump it up to 64%. \u00a0But the AEMO figures fall short because they leave out rooftop solar panels.\u00a0 To determine solar power&#8217;s full contribution, I will use information from <a href=\"https:\/\/opennem.org.au\/energy\/nem\/?range=7d&amp;interval=30m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenNEM<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>OpenNEM Figures<\/h2>\r\n<p>The NEM part of OpenNEM stands for National Electricity Market, which covers the eastern states but not WA or NT.\u00a0 The &#8220;open&#8221; part refers to how they put NEM info on the net for everyone to see.<\/p>\r\n<p>We can be very confident that AEMO information is correct because they are in charge of operating the grid and have access to vast resources thanks to getting a cut of your electricity bill.\u00a0 OpenNEM does very well, considering they don&#8217;t operate a trans-continental electricity grid and only have access to extremely sub-vast resources.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Electricity Generation Percentage<\/h2>\r\n<p>OpenNEM says South Australia generated 2,387 gigawatt-hours from rooftop solar panels over the past year &#8212; including small-scale solar farms of 100 kilowatts or less.\u00a0 Taking their figures for gigawatt-hours (GWh) of generation and using them to determine percentages gives the following:&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67091 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sa-generation.jpg\" alt=\"South Australia electricity generation - November 2021 - October 2022\" width=\"900\" height=\"846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sa-generation.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sa-generation-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sa-generation-768x722.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Assuming the batteries were charged with 80% renewable energy, wind and solar provided 70.3% of SA&#8217;s total generation.<\/p>\r\n<h2>SA Smashing Gas<\/h2>\r\n<p>Below is OpenNEM showing SA electricity generation and imports for the past 23 years:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_67048\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67048\" class=\"wp-image-67048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/70_smashing_gas.jpg\" alt=\"Graph: South Australia electricity generation and imports\" width=\"1000\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/70_smashing_gas.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/70_smashing_gas-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/70_smashing_gas-768x401.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When columns extend below the dotted line it represents energy exported to Victoria.\u00a0 (Image: OpenNEM)<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Since 2007, South Australian renewables have expanded rapidly, driving coal generation out of the state by 2016.\u00a0 This was followed by a temporary increase in gas that has steadily reduced.\u00a0 Last financial year, gas generation was close to half what it was in 2018-19.\u00a0 A good thing too, as that stuff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/more-electricity-price-hikes\/\">costs a fortune<\/a> at the moment. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The AEMO predicts South Australia will be producing more renewable electricity than its total electricity consumption by 2030.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve got my hopes set on the state reaching that point well before then.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/australia\/solar-power-sa\/\">Rooftop solar in South Australia<\/a> is expanding rapidly and will only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2022\/oct\/12\/solar-panel-inquiries-off-the-charts-after-alinta-boss-predicts-35-power-price-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pick up pace<\/a> when we&#8217;re hit with massive electricity price hikes next year.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Wind generation is also expanding in SA after a three-year hiatus.\u00a0 Australia&#8217;s second-largest wind farm, the 412-megawatt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energymining.sa.gov.au\/home\/news\/latest\/construction-begins-on-sas-biggest-wind-farm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Goyder South project<\/a>, is under construction northeast of Port Wakefield.\u00a0 It will be completed in 2024, but as they don&#8217;t like leaving completed wind turbines sitting idle, it will start contributing clean energy to the SA grid well before then.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>When South Australia reaches 100% renewable energy generation, it will show the world a major region with no hydro can eliminate its reliance on fossil fuels.\u00a0 These world-changing developments are helping secure a safe future for us all.
