Thanks to support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/blog\/arena-backs-eight-big-batteries-to-bolster-grid\/\">(ARENA) announced last month<\/a>, it will ultimately be equipped with grid-forming inverter technology; enabling provision of stability services historically provided\u00a0 by fossil fuel generators.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Next generation grid scale batteries such as Western Downs Battery will underpin this transition, with inverter technology that can maintain grid stability without fossil fuels,&#8221; said ARENA CEO Darren Miller.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Western Downs Battery is expected to start operating in the summer of 2024\/25.<\/p>\n<h2>About Western Downs Green Power Hub<\/h2>\n<p>The big battery will leverage existing infrastructure at Neoen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/westerndownsgreenpowerhub.com.au\/\"> Western Downs Green Power Hub<\/a>, which also consists of a 460 MW (dc) \/ 400 MW (ac) solar farm.\u00a0 The project site is situated 22 kilometres south-east of Chinchilla and is just a few clicks from Powerlink\u2019s Western Downs substation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/western-downs-solar.jpg\" alt=\"Western Downs solar farm\" width=\"900\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/western-downs-solar.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/western-downs-solar-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/western-downs-solar-768x411.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In mid-December, <a href=\"https:\/\/westerndownsgreenpowerhub.com.au\/2022\/12\/20\/now-exporting-300mw\/\">Neoen announced<\/a> the facility had received approval to export a maximum of 300 MW(ac) into the Queensland grid.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;While the facility\u2019s final rated capacity will be 400MW(ac), this significant milestone makes Western Downs Green Power Hub the largest operating solar farm in Australia!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Grid connection of the project was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/western-downs-solar-mb2213\/\">achieved in October 2021<\/a>. More than one million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a> have been installed and the installation of trackers is 99.9% complete said the company; which is focusing on the facility commencing (full?) operations this year.<\/p>\n<p>When operating at full capacity, the massive clean power station is expected to generate an estimated 1,080 GWh of clean electricity per year; avoiding 864,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.<\/p>\n<h2>Neoen&#8217;s Big Batteries In Australia<\/h2>\n<p>The Western Downs project will be Neoen&#8217;s fourth big battery in Australia. The others are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>300 MW \/ 450 MWh Victorian Big Battery (Geelong)<\/li>\n<li>150 MW \/ 193.5 MWh Hornsdale Power Reserve (aka &#8211; Tesla Big Battery, South Australia)<\/li>\n<li>100 MW \/ 200 MWh Capital Battery (ACT &#8211; under construction)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are extremely proud to now have a big battery in four of the five states of the National Electricity Market,&#8221; said Mr. de Sambucy; jumping the gun just a little.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-big-battery-first-year\/\">Tesla Big Battery<\/a> in South Australia has been operating since late 2017 and started its working life at 100MW \/ 129 MWh before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/tesla-hornsdale-expansion-mb1298\/\">capacity was expanded<\/a> a few years ago. Like this first project, the Victorian Big Battery also captured attention globally, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/big-battery-blaze-mb2104\/\">not always for positive reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Neoen are proposing to build a second stage of the Victorian Big Battery, increasing its capacity by up to 600MW.
