{"id":69829,"date":"2023-01-12T06:56:29","date_gmt":"2023-01-11T20:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=69829"},"modified":"2023-01-12T06:56:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T20:26:29","slug":"solar-system-servicing-mb2788","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-system-servicing-mb2788\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar System Servicing: Energy Safe Victoria Reminder\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-69830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/solar-inspections-servicing.jpg\" alt=\"Solar inspections and servicing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/solar-inspections-servicing.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/solar-inspections-servicing-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/solar-inspections-servicing-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/solar-inspections-servicing-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After several fires in the last few weeks involving older solar power systems, Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) has reminded Victorians about the importance of regular solar inspections and servicing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Various Victorian local media outlets including the <a href=\"https:\/\/brimbanknorthwest.starweekly.com.au\/news\/esv-reminds-victorians-to-have-rooftop-solar-systems-serviced-following-three-fires\/\">Star Weekly<\/a> report ESV has investigated three recent fires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>December 25: 10-year-old solar system in Mentone (damage confined to panels).<\/li>\n<li>December 27: 5-year-old system in Ferntree Gully (balcony and external cladding damage).<\/li>\n<li>January 4: 7-year-old system in Mt. Evelyn (significant property damage).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The culprit in each case was a faulty DC isolator. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-fires-nsw-mb1829\/\">Rooftop DC isolators<\/a> in particular have been the bane of the solar industry for years; but were a required bit of kit &#8211; ironically, as a safety measure. After years of pushing for change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/inverters-integrated-isolators-mb2269\/\">and after some initial mayhem<\/a>, rooftop DC isolators are thankfully no longer required if other conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p>But there are still plenty of rooftop DC isolators out there and will be for some years to come. A properly installed good quality DC isolator (on the rooftop or elsewhere) is safe, but it needs regular checking as well as other aspects of a solar power system. In the incidents above, the systems hadn&#8217;t been inspected in at least the last couple of years. Quality of the components and installation wasn&#8217;t mentioned.<\/p>\n<h2>Showing Solar Some Love<\/h2>\n<p>ESV Acting chief executive Ian Burgwin commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;These avoidable fires serve as important reminders, that just like a car, rooftop solar installations need to be serviced regularly to ensure they\u2019re always running safely.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Energy Safe Victoria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-system-servicing-mb2430\/\">launched a campaign<\/a> last year recommending servicing of a solar power system by a suitably qualified professional be carried out every 2 years.<\/p>\n<p>While SolarQuotes founder Finn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/good-solar-guide\/systems-maintenance\/\"> recommends an inspection every 5 years<\/a>; that&#8217;s assuming a good quality installation from the get-go. Unfortunately, not all are and fire risk is an example of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/cheapsystems.html\">high cost of cheap solar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company that installed your system should be able arrange an inspection and service. If it&#8217;s sketchy or non-existent, arranging an inspection should be pretty high up on the to-do list once you&#8217;ve moved in if you choose to not have the system looked at prior.<\/p>\n<p>Also worth noting is system testing is required by Distributed Network Service Providers (DNSPs) every five years in South Australia, the ACT and Victoria (I&#8217;m not clear on the situation in other states and territories). So, it&#8217;s not just a smart thing to have done, but it can also be an obligation.<\/p>\n<p>While the cost of regular servicing\/inspection can be a pain in the hip-pocket (up to a few hundred dollars a pop), regular maintenance can prevent bigger financial headaches down the track &#8211;
