Internet Dongle = Crap."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73138 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/deep-dive-sungrow-warranty.jpg\" alt=\"Sungrow warranty analysis\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/deep-dive-sungrow-warranty.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/deep-dive-sungrow-warranty-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/deep-dive-sungrow-warranty-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/deep-dive-sungrow-warranty-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Sungrow is a giant manufacturer of solar inverters.\u00a0 A huge number are installed on and in homes across the country, so it&#8217;s a good thing their written warranty is among the best in the industry.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the warranty is still far from perfect. <!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>If you get a solar power system with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/sungrow-review.html\">Sungrow inverter<\/a> &#8212; or had one installed after around July 2020 &#8212; chances are it has a 10 year warranty that covers most components as well as labour and transport.<\/p>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ve already done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/sungrow-inverters-deep-dive\/\">a deep dive into Sungrow inverters<\/a>, so this article will be a deep dive into the details of the Sungrow residential solar inverter warranty.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll also explain that Sungrow generally goes beyond the words of its written warranty and lives up to most of its obligations under Australia&#8217;s Consumer Guarantees.\u00a0 This is why we consider Sungrow inverters well supported in Australia and why they are one of the 12 solar inverter manufacturers we can currently recommend.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Keep reading and I&#8217;ll explain:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>How Sungrow&#8217;s warranty compares with other manufacturers.<\/li>\r\n<li>What the warranty covers and what it &#8212; unfortunately &#8212; does not.<\/li>\r\n<li>How its wireless communications dongle only has a one year warranty.<\/li>\r\n<li>Important and\/or interesting details in the warranty document&#8217;s fine print.<\/li>\r\n<li>Why we consider Sungrow inverters to be well supported in Australia and worth using.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>You can find the warranty document by <a href=\"https:\/\/service.sungrowpower.com.au\/Warranty\/warranty\">visiting this Sungrow page<\/a> and clicking\u00a0&#8220;Inverter Warranty (10 Years Premium)&#8221;.\u00a0 Australia is the only country that receives their premium warranty.\u00a0 This is thanks to our consumer law giving more of a toss about consumers than most places.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Warranty Length<\/h2>\r\n<p>Below is a graph comparing solar inverter manufacturers&#8217; written warranties. A manufacturer may provide more after-sales support than the warranty promises.\u00a0 To meet their obligations under Australian consumer law, in many cases, they have to.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-inverter-warranty-review\/\">shown this graph before<\/a> and some people weren&#8217;t happy about it.\u00a0 They thought it ranked companies on how much after-sales support they provide, but that&#8217;s not what it shows.\u00a0 It merely compares the written warranties and, where they&#8217;re identical, the manufacturers are in alphabetical order.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Manufacturers are not limited to only providing the support promised in their written warranties.\u00a0 To be recommended by SolarQuotes, they have to go beyond what their warranties cover and generally meet their obligations under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/consumers\/buying-products-and-services\/consumer-rights-and-guarantees\">Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/a> with a minimum of arm twisting.\u00a0 Our Consumer Guarantees provide better protection than any inverter warranty I&#8217;ve seen, but Sungrow, along with FIMER, Goodwe, and SMA, have written warranties that come the closest to offering that level of protection.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Dodgy Warranty Support<\/h2>\r\n<p>Tragically, it&#8217;s also possible for companies that don&#8217;t care about their reputation to not even live up to what&#8217;s promised in their warranties.\u00a0 If your inverter is from a dodgy company, when you try to make a warranty claim, their response could be along the lines of&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Yeah, sorry mate, but what you have here is a warranty for Suk Tin Solar Inverters.\u00a0 That company has no affiliation with us.\u00a0 We are Suk Tin Solar Inverters with a silent &#8220;p&#8221;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also invisible.\u00a0 And while I know I resemble the General Manager of the company that sold you your inverter, I am actually my own twin brother and have no legal responsibility for your purchase.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>The above may be a slight exaggeration, but more than one company has done a runner from Australia after their products developed problems and left customers to fend for themselves.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Solar Inverters We Recommend<\/h2>\r\n<p>Here is a graphic from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">Solar 101 Guide<\/a> showing the one dozen solar inverter manufacturers SolarQuotes currently recommends:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72031 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_chart.png\" alt=\"SolarQuotes recommended inverter chart\" width=\"648\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_chart.png 648w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_chart-300x244.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>There are 13 companies on that chart, but General Electric inverters are produced by Goodwe, so there are only 12 manufacturers.\u00a0 We consider all of these to be reliable and well-supported in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>While the lower cost &#8220;entry-level&#8221; inverters on the left side of the chart may not have the longevity or polished monitoring of the more expensive &#8220;top-end&#8221; ones on the right, I would expect all inverters from manufacturers on the chart to operate without problem for a minimum of 10 years.\u00a0 If they don&#8217;t, I would expect the problem to be fixed quickly and without cost to the homeowner, either under warranty or Australian Consumer Guarantees.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But I also expect the typical solar inverter from a manufacturer on our recommended chart to last longer than 10 years.\u00a0 Just how long depends on how close it is to the right-hand &#8220;top end&#8221; side.\u00a0 For example, my friend has an SMA inverter on their garage wall that has operated without problem for 20 years.<\/p>\r\n<p>Note that if there is a problem with your inverter or solar power system, your installer should be your first port of call.\u00a0 But if they&#8217;re no longer around, you can directly claim from the manufacturer.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What The Sungrow Inverter Warranty Covers<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Sungrow warranty promises their inverters will be&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ten (10) years from the date of installation of the relevant inverter, but no more than eleven (11) years from the manufacturing date of that inverter (whichever comes first) in Australia only.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>You might think the above claim means that if it develops any problems with materials or workmanship over 10 years you&#8217;re covered.\u00a0 Unfortunately, there are components the warranty specifically excludes.\u00a0 Also, as with all inverter warranties, there are a range of exclusions that will render it void.\u00a0 But provided a claim is accepted under warranty, then Sungrow will cover the cost of parts or replacement as well as labour and transport.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The fact they will let the inverter sit in a box in an installer&#8217;s storage space for up to a year before the warranty starts is one thing that&#8217;s better than most.\u00a0 Many manufacturers only allow three months maximum between manufacture and installation before the warranty clock starts ticking.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What The Warranty Doesn&#8217;t Cover<\/h2>\r\n<p>Solar inverter warranties normally exclude a whole range of components from coverage, and Sungrow is no exception.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t cover:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Fuses<\/li>\r\n<li>Surge suppressors<\/li>\r\n<li>Filters<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This is a pity because these are among the most likely components to fail.\u00a0 It also states it won&#8217;t cover cosmetic damage.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_72459\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72459\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_exceptions.png\" alt=\"Sungrow warranty exceptions\" width=\"621\" height=\"31\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_exceptions.png 621w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_exceptions-300x15.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">See?<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>There is also a list of exclusions the warranty won&#8217;t cover, and they are all fairly standard for solar inverter warranties.\u00a0 They basically require the inverter to be installed according to the user manual and exclude Sungrow from providing warranty coverage for anything out of their direct control.<\/p>\r\n<p>The user manuals &#8212; also known as installation manuals &#8212; for Sungrow inverters say they can be installed outside, but they must be kept out of the rain and direct sunshine.\u00a0 The manuals for their hybrid inverters are an exception, where it becomes a recommendation rather than a requirement.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Its Wireless Dongle Only Has A 1 Year Warranty<\/h2>\r\n<p>In addition to fuses, surge suppressors, and filters being exempt from the warranty, the 10-year warranty also doesn&#8217;t cover the inverter&#8217;s wireless dongle.\u00a0 Instead, its warranty is only for a single year.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_72472\" style=\"width: 636px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72472\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_dongle.jpg\" alt=\"Sungrow wireless dongle.\" width=\"626\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_dongle.jpg 626w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_dongle-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is what the typical Sungrow wireless dongle looks like. It plugs into the underside of the inverter and allows it to use your wireless modem to connect to the internet.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>This one-year warranty applies to all Sungrow wireless communication dongles, smart energy meters, logger devices, and any associated accessories.<\/p>\r\n<p>An internet connection is required for all new installations in South Australia and may soon be a requirement in other parts of the country.\u00a0 As wireless communication is such an important feature, in my very unhumble opinion, a one-year warranty is not good enough.\u00a0 The only saving grace is the warranty doesn&#8217;t require the inverter receive regular internet updates, so if the wireless dongle fails, you won&#8217;t risk losing your 10-year inverter warranty.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_itsy.jpg\" alt=\"Itsy bitsy dongle warranty.\" width=\"718\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_itsy.jpg 718w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_itsy-300x92.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>What Sungrow Will Do<\/h2>\r\n<p>If there is a problem with the materials or workmanship of the inverter and it&#8217;s not in the excluded components list or a dongle that died after its one-year warranty expired, then the warranty says Sungrow will either&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Repair the inverter.\u00a0 Either onsite or at a repair centre.<\/li>\r\n<li>Replace the inverter with either a new one or a refurbished second-hand one.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>If they only replace components, they can, at their option, use second-hand parts.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Because their range of inverters can change over time, if they replace an inverter with a new one, they will &#8212; at their discretion &#8212; replace it with their most similar model.\u00a0 The warranty states they will not pay for any changes to the rest of the solar power system that a different inverter model may require. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_72490\" style=\"width: 866px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_sungrows.jpg\" alt=\"Evolution of main sequence star\" width=\"856\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_sungrows.jpg 856w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_sungrows-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_sungrows-768x292.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This image, lifted from Encyclopaedia Britannica, shows how the SUN will GROW into a red giant in 5 billion years&#8217; time. Hopefully, Sungrow won&#8217;t take this long to grow its dongle warranty.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2>Repairer Payments<\/h2>\r\n<p>The warranty is different from most in that it provides figures for payments made to those replacing or repairing inverters under warranty.\u00a0 These payments will normally only be available to installers.\u00a0 They are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>$150 for a standard site visit.\u00a0 If multiple visits are required, Sungrow must be notified before each one.\u00a0 The amount can be higher for larger commercial inverters.\u00a0 For more information, you can go to <a href=\"https:\/\/service.sungrowpower.com.au\/Warranty\/warranty\">this page<\/a> and click &#8220;Service Rebate&#8221;.<\/li>\r\n<li>Travel costs of up to $200 for standard ground transportation.\u00a0 So if you drive a batmobile, you may be in trouble.<\/li>\r\n<li>Up to $200 to pay for transport of inverters or components to Sungrow.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The warranty specifically says they will not pay for &#8220;sustenance&#8221;, which I presume means &#8220;food and\/or accommodation&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Note that while the warranty states these amounts, they may not necessarily be what installers actually receive.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like my father used to say, &#8220;Not everything is negotiable, but everything is negosh.\u00a0 It&#8217;s up to the other side to decide if they&#8217;re agreeable to provide an iable.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<h2>You Must Have Proof Of Purchase<\/h2>\r\n<p>If your solar inverter has a problem while it&#8217;s under warranty, you should contact your installer.\u00a0 But if that&#8217;s not an option, you can use Sungrow&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/service.sungrowpower.com.au\/Warranty\/online-warranty-claim-form\">online warranty claim form<\/a>.\u00a0 The warranty document says you must provide proof of purchase.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>No Compensation For Loss Of Production<\/h2>\r\n<p>The warranty says it won&#8217;t cover the cost of any lost solar energy output resulting from a faulty inverter.<\/p>\r\n<h2>It&#8217;s Not Transferrable<\/h2>\r\n<p>The warranty specifically says it&#8217;s not transferrable, so if you sell your home, you cannot transfer a Sungrow inverter warranty to the new owner.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/h2>\r\n<p>So far, this article has been about what the warranty says, but under Australian Consumer Guarantees you have protections that are better than any written inverter warranty I&#8217;ve seen.\u00a0 The Sungrow Australian warranty mentions them, as it should:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72488 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_guarantees.jpg\" alt=\"Australian consumer law statement in Sungrow warranty\" width=\"797\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_guarantees.jpg 797w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_guarantees-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sungrow_warranty_guarantees-768x294.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Note how it says under Australian consumer law you can be entitled to compensation for &#8220;&#8230;reasonably foreseeable loss or damage&#8221;, despite the written warranty specifically saying it won&#8217;t cover loss of electricity generation.<\/p>\r\n<p>If your solar inverter fails during its warranty period and you can&#8217;t claim using the written warranty, then &#8212; provided it was installed correctly and used normally &#8212; I would say there&#8217;s an excellent chance you can make a claim under Australian Consumer Guarantees.\u00a0 Provided it&#8217;s reasonable, you may even be able to make a claim after the warranty period ends.\u00a0 But note I&#8217;m not a lawyer, so this is just my understanding.\u00a0 This is not professional advice on consumer law.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, Sungrow will generally live up to its obligations under Australian Consumer Guarantees, which is one important reason why we can recommend using them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>One Of The Best Inverter Warranties &#8212; But Could Be Better<\/h2>\r\n<p>Australian consumer law provides better protection than people get in many countries, but it&#8217;s still reasonable.\u00a0 Written warranties should provide additional protection.\u00a0 Despite this, I&#8217;ve never seen a warranty &#8212;
