Go back to the download page, search &#8216;Wattpilot&#8217; and click &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fronius.com\/~\/downloads\/Solar%20Energy\/Operating%20Instructions\/42,0426,0435,EN.pdf\">Fronius Wattpilot Go 11 J 2.0 \/ Go 22 J \/ Go 22 J AU<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Ensure it has the &#8220;AU&#8221; on the end since that stands for AUstralia.\u00a0 Also, unless you&#8217;re a polyglot, click on the ones marked &#8220;EN&#8221; for English.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Contact Your Installer First<\/h2>\r\n<p>If there is a problem with your Fronius Wattpilot, contact your installer first.\u00a0 They&#8217;re the ones who took your money and are responsible for ensuring it works.\u00a0 Let them deal with Fronius if that&#8217;s necessary.\u00a0 But you can contact Fronius directly if your installer is no longer around. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What The Warranty Covers<\/h2>\r\n<p>The warranty document says a Wattpilot warranty claim can be made if &#8211; and only if&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>It has a material or manufacturing defect that is Fronius&#8217;s fault.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>But it&#8217;s not enough.\u00a0 The defect must&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Affect the operation of the Wattpilot.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>And it also doesn&#8217;t count if you&#8217;re doing anything weird&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The defect [must occur] during the normal use of the covered product.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>And finally&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>None of the many exclusions in the warranty apply.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>So even if the Wattpilot has an obvious fault &#8212; say it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tRsfOGJ5lZg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">squawks like a cockatoo<\/a> when in use &#8212; Fronius could say the warranty doesn&#8217;t apply if the noise doesn&#8217;t affect its operation.\u00a0 While this seems completely unreasonable, unreasonable warranty conditions are common.\u00a0 But the good news is that, unlike warranty-writing lawyers, Fronius Australia are good eggs.\u00a0 They&#8217;re generally reasonable when resolving issues, even if their warranty doesn&#8217;t technically cover them.<\/p>\r\n<p>So while the Fronius warranty conditions sound strict, they are typical of most EV charger warranties.\u00a0 You also have additional protection starting with your installer, followed by Fronius customer service and &#8211; potentially &#8211; ending with Australian Consumer Law which states products must be\u00a0&#8220;safe, durable, and free of defects&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>After that comes vigilante justice, but I don&#8217;t recommend it.\u00a0 Unless you&#8217;re Batman.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Excluded Components<\/h2>\r\n<p>One unfortunate fact about Fonius warranties is they come with a list of components that aren&#8217;t covered.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s what they exclude:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;Components of covered products that are subject to regular wear and tear.\u00a0 These include DC isolators, fuses, bayonet connectors, varistors, surge arresters, string fuses and mechanical screw connections if they are not properly tightened to the correct torque during installation.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>On the bright side, there&#8217;s not much in the way of specifically listed excluded components that come with a Wattpilot:<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_75411\" style=\"width: 796px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75411\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wattpilot-items.png\" alt=\"What comes with a Wattpilot.\" width=\"786\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wattpilot-items.png 786w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wattpilot-items-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/wattpilot-items-768x428.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What you get with a Wattpilot Go.\u00a0 The Wattpilot Home is similar, except there&#8217;s no plug on its cord because it&#8217;s hardwired.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>On the dark side, the warranty&#8217;s wording doesn&#8217;t prevent Fronius from saying other components are also &#8220;subject to significant wear and tear&#8221;.\u00a0 So they could claim the Wattpilot socket gets significantly worn and torn &#8212; or perhaps the plug on the portable version. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Exclusions Galore<\/h2>\r\n<p>As is typical, the Fronius warranty has many exclusions that render it void.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Most of them boil down to:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The Wattpilot must be used according to its installation manual.<\/li>\r\n<li>It must be used normally, e.g. for charging EVs &#8212; not giant battle robots.<\/li>\r\n<li>It can&#8217;t be hacked or modified or given unauthorized repairs.<\/li>\r\n<li>The warranty doesn&#8217;t cover anything that isn&#8217;t directly Fronius&#8217;s fault.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>One exclusion I&#8217;ll specifically mention is:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;No claims for energy that has not been fed into the grid or energy that has not been used for self-consumption, etc.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>This means that if the Wattpilot fails to charge your Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-warranty\/#en-74230-2' id='enref-74230-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(74230)'>2<\/a><\/sup> with solar energy like it was supposed to, the warranty won&#8217;t cover any loss of money that results.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Wattpilot Doesn&#8217;t Need Internet Updates, But Fronius Inverters Do<\/h2>\r\n<p>These days even some toothbrushes want to be connected to the internet and receive updates<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-wattpilot-warranty\/#en-74230-3' id='enref-74230-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(74230)'>3<\/a><\/sup> and warranties can require this.\u00a0 Fortunately, the Wattpilot does not need an internet connection for updates.\u00a0 But if you use it with a Fronius inverter, the inverter will.\u00a0 The Fronius warranty says it must be either connected to the internet so it can be updated, or you must otherwise regularly provide it with updates.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fronius-inverter-warranty-review\/\">read about Fronius inverter warranties here<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>No Warranty Extensions<\/h2>\r\n<p>Fronius likes to sell warranty extensions for its inverters.\u00a0 This may be why its inverter warranties aren&#8217;t as long as I think they should be &#8212; they want you to pay for them.\u00a0 But warranty extensions aren&#8217;t available for the Wattpilot.<\/p>\r\n<h2>It&#8217;s Transferrable<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you have a Wattpilot home and you sell the property where it&#8217;s installed, you can transfer the warranty to the new owner.\u00a0 But the warranty says gives the requirement that&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;The covered product is not removed from the place of first use.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>That&#8217;s a bit of a strange requirement for the Wattpilot Go, since it&#8217;s portable.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What Fronius Will Do<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you make a claim that&#8217;s covered by the warranty, then Fronius says they get to decide which of the following three things they will do:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Repair the Wattpilot.<\/li>\r\n<li>Replace the Wattpilot with &#8220;&#8230;an equivalent unit of the same age, type and condition.&#8221; \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Pay you off &#8212; but not with money.\u00a0 Instead, &#8220;A credit note is issued for the market value applicable at the time of the service notification, which can be used to purchase a new FRONIUS product.&#8221;<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>Personally, I would not want <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K-6IzkDyl9Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fronius bucks<\/a>.\u00a0 For one thing, the &#8220;market value&#8221; of a used Wattpilot may be much less than what you paid new. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>In reality, what&#8217;s most likely to happen is you&#8217;ll get a replacement unit. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>What Fronius Doesn&#8217;t Have To Do<\/h2>\r\n<p>According to the warranty, Fronius doesn&#8217;t have to pay for the cost of labour to replace a Wattpilot.\u00a0 As the Wattpilot Go is portable, this will mainly apply to the hardwired Wattpilot Home.<\/p>\r\n<p>The warranty also says it doesn&#8217;t cover transport costs for returning units to Fronius or travel costs for repair people.\u00a0 They also say if technology change renders a replacement incompatible with anything, they won&#8217;t cover any related costs.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, you are protected by more than just the Fronius warranty.<\/p>\r\n<h2>You Are Protected By Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/h2>\r\n<p>As mentioned earlier, you are protected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/consumers\/buying-products-and-services\/consumer-rights-and-guarantees\">Australian Consumer Guarantees<\/a> which don&#8217;t end when a product&#8217;s warranty does. \u00a0Given that a smart EV charger like the Wattpilot costs around $2000, I think it&#8217;s very bloody reasonable for people to not be out of pocket if it breaks down after just two and a bit years.<\/p>\r\n<p>You can also claim for reasonable losses from a faulty product, such as labour and transport costs. \u00a0And despite any Fronius small-print, it&#8217;s also possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accc.gov.au\/consumers\/problem-with-a-product-or-service-you-bought\/claiming-compensation\">claim for losses<\/a> from reduced solar self-consumption from your Wattpilot being out of action.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Not Bad, But It Could Be Better<\/h2>\r\n<p>While the Wattpilot warranty isn&#8217;t bad compared to the low standard set by other EV chargers on the market, I am disappointed that a big-name company like Fronius, with big Austrian energy, can&#8217;t do better than a 2 year warranty.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fronius should be confident enough in its ability to design a decent charger to at least give it a warranty that&#8217;s longer than average &#8211;
