{"id":75489,"date":"2023-06-05T08:25:28","date_gmt":"2023-06-04T21:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=75489"},"modified":"2023-06-05T08:25:28","modified_gmt":"2023-06-04T21:55:28","slug":"redflow-microgrid-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/redflow-microgrid-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Redflow&#8217;s Biggest Deal Ever: The Paskenta Racheria Microgrid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-pods.jpg\" alt=\"reflow battery pods on site\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-pods.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-pods-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-pods-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-pods-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zinc-bromine flow battery specialist Redflow has signed its largest deal to date: $18 million to provide 2000 of its ZBM3 batteries to a Native American-owned microgrid in California.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/wcsecure.weblink.com.au\/pdf\/RFX\/02671895.pdf\">statement to the Australian Securities Exchange (PDF)<\/a>, the company said it will be delivering the batteries this year and into 2024, for commissioning in the first quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>They are to be used in the Nomlaki Indians\u2019 Paskenta Racheria Microgrid Project, a 20MWh long-duration energy storage fed by 5MW of solar power near Corning in California.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Redflow\u2019s largest single sale and deployment, and when operational, it will be one of the world\u2019s largest zinc-based battery systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Energy Pod200 Units and ZBM3 Batteries Explained<\/h2>\n<p>The flow batteries will be installed as 100 x 200kWh pods imaginatively called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/redflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Redflow-Energy-Pod200-Datasheet_Feb23.pdf\">Energy Pod200<\/a>&#8216; units.<\/p>\n<p>Each energy pod is a 3m x 2m x2m, IP55 rated metal enclosure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75552\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75552\" class=\"wp-image-75552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-energy-pod200.jpg\" alt=\"Energy Pod200 units\" width=\"507\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-energy-pod200.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-energy-pod200-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-energy-pod200-768x485.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Redflow Energy Pod200 installation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Each Energy Pod200 contains 20 x 10kWh ZBM3 flow batteries that look like this:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75553\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75553\" class=\" wp-image-75553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-zbm3.jpg\" alt=\"reflow zbm3\" width=\"387\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-zbm3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-zbm3-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/redflow-zbm3-768x636.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An individual Redflow ZBM3 battery with 10 kWh of storage.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Projected Impact and Financing of the Project<\/h2>\n<p>CEO and managing director Tim Harris said the battery will reduce the Paskenta Racheria\u2019s grid demand, and boost its \u201cenergy security and sovereignty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC), and will be delivered by Faraday Microgrids, which won the funding.<\/p>\n<p>Redflow\u2019s ASX announcement said it \u201cexpects to generate a positive return at the project level\u201d, with the per-battery price in the order of AU$9000.<\/p>\n<h2>Brisbane City Council&#8217;s Relatively Tiny 30kWh System<\/h2>\n<p>The company also <a href=\"https:\/\/redflow.com\/project\/brisbane-city-council-boosts-resilience-with-redflow-batteries\">recently announced<\/a> the commissioning of a system over 2 orders of magnitude smaller: a 30kWh battery for Brisbane City Council.<\/p>\n<p>The council is using the installation at the Willawong Animal Rehoming Centre as part of a program to explore battery storage.<\/p>\n<p>The centre\u2019s critical load is refrigeration for vaccines and medications, making grid outages expensive.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s media release said it \u201cwas looking for a reliable backup solution that would prevent these loads being affected by outages and ultimately losing vital and expensive animal medicines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Integration partner Bright Spark Group deployed the project, along with two Deye hybrid inverters that will support the future addition of solar PV to get more out of the batteries.<\/p>\n<h2>The Challenges of ZBM3 Deployment<\/h2>\n<p>The ZBM3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/redflow-zbm3-mb2545\/\">began shipping in July 2022<\/a>, after a degree of tribulation for Redflow.<\/p>\n<p>Customer trials had begun in 2020, and the company hoped to start deliveries in 2021, but Covid-related staff absence and delays to both equipment servicing and material supply held them up.<\/p>\n<h2>Thinking Of A Redflow ZBM3 Battery For Your Home?<\/h2>\n<p>If you like to do things differently &#8211;
