{"id":78078,"date":"2023-08-18T10:42:33","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T01:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=78078"},"modified":"2024-10-01T12:47:04","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T03:17:04","slug":"agl-ev-charging-tariff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/agl-ev-charging-tariff\/","title":{"rendered":"AGL&#8217;s EV Tariff: Cheap Charging But A Caveat For Home Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-78133 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nighttime-charging.jpg\" alt=\"AGL overnight EV charging tariff\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nighttime-charging.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nighttime-charging-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nighttime-charging-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/nighttime-charging-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In good news for EV owners that must charge overnight, AGL now offers nighttime EV charging tariffs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Three years of trials demonstrated a customer preference for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/\">home EV charging<\/a> at night, so the tariff package offers prices below AGL\u2019s current off-peak price for EV charging: 8c\/kWh (~1.3c per km) between midnight and 6am.<\/p>\n<p>Other EV-friendly plans available include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.ovoenergy.com.au\/the-ev-plan?gclid=CjwKCAjwxOymBhAFEiwAnodBLF_Xd6D_tjnu0GuaakIpDM2c4zRFzwm1fH5nF5K1YxNlBiisuOfUahoCEEUQAvD_BwE\">OVO Energy&#8217;s EV plan<\/a> matches the 8c per kWh but currently advertises a 10c feed-in tariff compared to AGL&#8217;s 7c.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/agl-ev-charging-tariff\/#en-78078-1' id='enref-78078-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(78078)'>1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplyenergy.com.au\/residential\/energy-efficiency\/simply-ev\">Simply Energy&#8217;s EV plan<\/a> gives a paltry 6c per kWh <strong>discount<\/strong> on overnight charging &#8211; with higher usage charges than AGL and a 5.5c feed-in-tariff<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ioenergy.com.au\/plans\">ioEnergy&#8217;s SA Sustainable Home tariff<\/a> &#8211; for daytime charging at 8c per kWh between 10am and 3pm<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synergy.net.au\/Your-home\/Energy-plans\/Midday-Saver\">Synergy&#8217;s Midday Saver<\/a> (WA) &#8211; for daytime charging at 8.2c per kWh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AGL\u2019s offer includes a limited-time 5c\/kWh discount at BP Pulse rapid chargers for NSW customers, with offers to be made in other states \u201cshortly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s brief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agl.com.au\/about-agl\/media-centre\/asx-and-media-releases\/2023\/august\/agl-launches-ev-plan-to-give-customers-freedom-to-charge-while-t\">media release says<\/a> the Night Saver Energy Plan also gives customers a discounted rate for daytime charging, \u201crecognising the importance of having a fully charged car to help alleviate range anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AGL Chief Customer Officer Jo Egan said the company wants to offer products and services that encourage the electrification of transport:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are evolving our products and services to ensure they are flexible, simple and suit our customers\u2019 lifestyle. We know our customers charge while they sleep and we have remodelled our EV energy plan to give them an affordable price to charge at the most convenient time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other AGL EV initiatives include its <a href=\"https:\/\/next.agl.com.au\/ev-subscription\/cars\">rather pricey EV subscription service<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaluza.com\/kaluza-expands-global-footprint-to-australia-and-new-zealand\/\">partnership with software platform Kaluza<\/a> to roll out demand response software for EV charging and other household loads.<\/p>\n<h2>Be Careful If You Own A Home Battery<\/h2>\n<p><strong>From Finn:<\/strong> If you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/\">home battery<\/a> and charge your EV overnight for 8c per kWh, it makes no economic sense to empty your home battery into your car, which will be the default behaviour for most energy storage systems on the Australian market. You should save the energy for the morning peak.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-2-review.html\">Tesla Powerwall<\/a>, its software is smart enough to work this out itself, but you need to enter the tariff details into your Tesla app and engage &#8216;Time-Based Control&#8217;<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/agl-ev-charging-tariff\/#en-78078-2' id='enref-78078-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(78078)'>2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">any other home battery<\/a>, ask your installer what your options are for configuring it to not discharge into your car.
