{"id":80985,"date":"2024-01-17T07:30:06","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T22:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=80985"},"modified":"2024-01-15T09:42:11","modified_gmt":"2024-01-15T00:12:11","slug":"hazelnut-chocolate-design-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/hazelnut-chocolate-design-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cHazelnut chocolate\u201d Design Improves Solid-State Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chocolate-battery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chocolate-battery.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chocolate-battery-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chocolate-battery-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/chocolate-battery-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The world is flooded with stories about lithium battery fires (more frequently in consumer gadgets than in electric vehicles), putting a premium on battery safety research.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of the most promising research fields is in solid state batteries, but they&#8217;re still subject to one of the biggest fire risks, however \u2013 the formation of dendrite structures on the anode surface, which can cause shorts.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard researchers reckon they\u2019ve stolen a march in the research race, announcing a lithium metal battery that features charging \u201cin a matter of minutes\u201d, a cycle life of at least 6,000 charges, and a way to manage the formation of dendrites.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers from the university\u2019s John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences were led by associate professor Xin Li, who, in 2021, offered a multilayer design as a way to prevent dendrite formation.<\/p>\n<p>In his latest research, Harvard\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/seas.harvard.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/solid-state-battery-design-charges-minutes-lasts-thousands-cycles\">media release explained<\/a>, Li and his team use micron-sized silicon particles in the anode to stop dendrites forming.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen lithium ions move from the cathode to the anode during charging, the lithiation reaction is constricted at the shallow surface and the ions attach to the surface of the silicon particle but don\u2019t penetrate further,\u201d the university explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is markedly different from the chemistry of liquid lithium ion batteries in which the lithium ions penetrate through deep lithiation reaction and ultimately destroy silicon particles in the anode.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the solid-state battery, ions on the surface of the silicon undergo lithiation, forming a lithium metal plate around the silicon core. As Xi said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn our design, lithium metal gets wrapped around the silicon particle, like a hard chocolate shell around a hazelnut core in a chocolate truffle.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This creates a homogeneous surface across which the current density is evenly distributed, which prevents the growth of dendrites.<\/p>\n<p>The even surface allows plating and stripping to happen quickly, which the research team claims allows ten-minute charging.<\/p>\n<p>Their prototype, the size of a postage stamp, retained 80% of its capacity after 6,000 cycles.<\/p>\n<p>Li and three Harvard alumni have co-founded a company called Adden Energy to license the technology, and the company says it\u2019s scaled the battery up to a pouch battery the size of a smartphone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLithium metal anode batteries are considered the holy grail of batteries because they have ten times the capacity of commercial graphite anodes and could drastically increase the driving distance of electric vehicles,\u201d Li said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Their research is published <a
