It has all the info you need to confidently buy solar from a great installer.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t feel like watching &#8211; here&#8217;s a summary.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Why get solar?<\/h2>\n<p>I hope this is obvious by now, but with electricity bills going up and up, a well-designed solar system (and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/energy\/\">good electricity plan<\/a>) can eliminate bill shock for good.<\/p>\n<h2>How many panels should you buy?<\/h2>\n<p>My advice is simple &#8211; put on as much solar as you can reasonably fit and afford. I&#8217;ve never heard anyone complain they put on too much solar.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/buying-solar-panels-2024\/#en-81713-1' id='enref-81713-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(81713)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Anatomy Of A Solar System<\/h2>\n<p>A solar system is made up of three main components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a>, which convert sunlight into energy<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/\">inverter<\/a>, which turns the DC from your panels into AC electricity your home uses<\/li>\n<li>The monitoring, which lets you see how your system is performing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Solar Panels<\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the truth about solar panels these days: The Chinese have gotten so good at making high-performing, inexpensive panels that they&#8217;re now a commodity. Some wholesalers who sell high-end gear will get mad at me when they read this, but it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p>Check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/comparison\/compare-solar-panels\/\">panel comparison table<\/a>, and you&#8217;ll see the specs are all similar.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago, there was a big difference in performance and warranties between a budget-end panel and a premium-end one. Now, most panels come with 25-year warranties, and &#8211; as long as you avoid the crappy brands &#8211; \u00a0the difference in performance is marginal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brands I recommend<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82336\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82336\" class=\"size-full wp-image-82336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/panel-chart-mar-21.jpeg\" alt=\"panel brand chart march 2024\" width=\"750\" height=\"802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/panel-chart-mar-21.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/panel-chart-mar-21-281x300.jpeg 281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What&#8217;s the difference in price for a system using top-end brands over entry-level ones? Approx $400 per kW installed.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Solar inverters<\/h3>\n<p>This box of tricks converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into the AC electricity everything in your home uses.<\/p>\n<p>You have three choices here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>String inverters<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/hybrid-inverter-comparison\/\">Hybrid inverters<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/micro\/\">Micro inverters<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>String inverters<\/strong> are the cheapest and most straightforward choice. They&#8217;re a box mounted to your wall, and all the panels are wired into them:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81927\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81927\" class=\" wp-image-81927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fronius-gen24-on-wall.png\" alt=\"A Fronius Gen24 inverter\" width=\"483\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fronius-gen24-on-wall.png 694w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/fronius-gen24-on-wall-280x300.png 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81927\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A Fronius Gen24 &#8216;Primo&#8217; single-phase string inverter<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Hybrid inverters<\/strong> are a more expensive type of string inverter. They contain the electronics to handle both solar <em>and<\/em> batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Their downside is you&#8217;re locked into using batteries compatible with your hybrid inverter model. And if you want to buy the inverter first and add batteries later, it&#8217;s possible that compatible products could be discontinued. (This gets old after two weeks unless you are a complete nerd.)<\/p>\n<p>The downside?<\/p>\n<p>\u274c They&#8217;re significantly more expensive than string inverters. Your electricity meter only shares its data with your energy retailer. A consumption monitor shares it with <strong>you <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>Consumption monitors are optional, but in my opinion, they are an essential part of a solar system and should be considered mandatory. If you can&#8217;t keep track of your energy use, you can&#8217;t change your habits to maximise your savings from solar.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81923\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81923\" class=\" wp-image-81923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/consumption-monitoring-app.jpg\" alt=\"Consumption monitoring screenshot\" width=\"458\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/consumption-monitoring-app.jpg 664w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/consumption-monitoring-app-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The more you keep your usage inside the &#8216;solar curve&#8217;, the lower your bill.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Do You Need Tilt Frames?<\/h2>\n<p>The typical Aussie roof has a tilt of 15 to 22 degrees. While the &#8216;perfect&#8217; angle to maximise your generation annually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-panels-tilt-angle\/\">is usually closer to 30 degrees<\/a>, the performance gain is marginal.<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; don&#8217;t worry about using expensive tilt frames to get the perfect angle. Mount your panels flush with your roof.<\/p>\n<p>The exception to this is if you have a flat roof because your panels won&#8217;t self-clean in the rain. If your roof is flat, get tilt frames &#8211; but if you have limited roof space, tilting them north can kneecap your total system size. From all the data I&#8217;ve seen, premium string inverters (like Fronius) perform as well in shady conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Not Get One Of Those Cheap Deals Off The Telly?<\/h2>\n<p>A dirt-cheap system may last a decent amount of time. But I wouldn&#8217;t bet money on it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81918\" style=\"width: 772px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81918\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81918\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rusty-balls.png\" alt=\"Aussie cricket legend Rusty Balls\" width=\"762\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rusty-balls.png 762w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rusty-balls-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Cricketers selling solar?<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Good, sustainable solar companies need to sell systems at a fair price that lets them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pay their Australian staff a fair wage (so they take their time with an install and don&#8217;t rush from one job to the next)<\/li>\n<li>buy good equipment backed by a local Australian support team<\/li>\n<li>and provide good after-sales service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you buy cheap, all incentives point towards a rushed install of crap brands and no-one in Australia to pick up the phone if you have a problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Well, What About That &#8216;Great Deal&#8217; The Nice Doorknocker Offered?<\/h2>\n<p>Commonly, doorknocking solar companies pad their quotes with fat margins, hoping you won&#8217;t get any quotes for comparison and realise you&#8217;ve been ripped off. You&#8217;d hope by overpaying, you&#8217;d at least be getting a well-installed system for all that cash. How Do You Avoid Shonks?<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Don&#8217;t go with the cheapest company you can find.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid door knockers and direct mail.<\/li>\n<li>Research a company&#8217;s online reputation.
