The Powerwall is on my family home and is connected to the Tesla VPP, and cycles more than once per day. I get a modest monthly bill from Tesla for my all electric house and 2 EVs. \u00a0The Sungrow (on a rental unit) is on a regular AGL tariff and has never seen a positive electricity bill.<\/p>\n<h2>How Long Do Batteries Take To Pay For Themselves?<\/h2>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar-calculator\/\">solar and battery calculator<\/a> can crunch the numbers for your situation. My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/calculator\/\">&#8220;Add a battery&#8221; calculator<\/a> shows you potential savings of adding a battery to your existing solar panel system.<\/p>\n<p>But generally, payback is lame on a flat electricity tariff but can be attractive on a time-of-use tariff:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-83476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/battery-payback-table.png\" alt=\"Battery payback table\" width=\"1376\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/battery-payback-table.png 1376w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/battery-payback-table-300x94.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/battery-payback-table-1024x320.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/battery-payback-table-768x240.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1376px) 100vw, 1376px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Best-case payback scenarios assume you&#8217;ll fully charge your battery from solar during the day and fully discharge it during peak grid pricing periods (for maximum savings) <strong>every day of the year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Are There Any Battery Rebates?<\/h2>\n<p>Sadly, unlike for solar, there is no federal battery rebate.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the NT, you can get <a href=\"https:\/\/nt.gov.au\/industry\/business-grants-funding\/home-and-business-battery-scheme\">up to $5000<\/a> from the territory government.<\/p>\n<p>While not rebates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solar.vic.gov.au\/solar-battery-loan\">Victoria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechoices.act.gov.au\/policy-programs\/sustainable-household-scheme\">the ACT<\/a> have interest-free loans to take the sting out of dropping thousands upfront.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/vpp-comparison\/\">Certain Virtual Power Plants<\/a> (VPPs) offer up-front discounts if you buy a battery directly from them or bring your own.<\/p>\n<h2>Batteries and Backup<\/h2>\n<p>Most people believe having a battery means their house is backed up in a blackout.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67885\" style=\"width: 593px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67885\" class=\" wp-image-67885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/battery-blackout-capability.jpg\" alt=\"Home battery blackout capabilities\" width=\"583\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/battery-blackout-capability.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/battery-blackout-capability-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/battery-blackout-capability-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/battery-blackout-capability-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>My place as the only beacon of light on a blacked-out street<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The reality depends on the specific battery you&#8217;re using.<\/p>\n<p>Some, like the Powerwall, will back up your whole house by default. Others can only handle backing up certain nominated circuits.<\/p>\n<p>Some batteries may not even offer any blackout protection.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s up to your installer to understand your requirements and offer a suitable system.<\/p>\n<p>My advice? Only backup essentials like lights, fridge, and living room (including internet router).
