We already knew the headline specs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storage:<\/strong> 13.5kWh<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power:<\/strong> 5kW steady, 7kW Peak<\/p>\n<p><strong>Price:<\/strong> AUD$8,000 + GST and Installation<\/p>\n<p>But there were lots of questions over the exact configuration and warranty details that could make or break Tesla&#8217;s shiny new battery. Most of these questions have now been answered.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the new specs reveal:<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hells_Bells_(song)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hells Bells<\/a> It&#8217;s True! AC \/ DC versions<\/h2>\n<p>The specs reveal the\u00a0rumours\u00a0of 2 versions of the Powerwall 2 are true. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/glossary.html#accoupling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AC coupled<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/glossary.html#dccoupling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC coupled<\/a> version will be released, both batteries for $8,000 + GST + installation. This\u00a0is a very smart move. \u00a0The AC version has an internal battery-inverter to change your home&#8217;s 240V AC \u00a0to the 50V DC the battery operates on and vice-versa.\u00a0This means it should be a piece of cake to retrofit to any existing grid connected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\">solar power system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The AC version also allows you to use any brand of solar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inverter<\/a> you like &#8211; including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/micro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">micro inverters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u00a0are claiming the AC Powerwall battery can also be configured for backup operation with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flick_of_the_Switch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flick of the switch<\/a>, but I&#8217;m skeptical. But I guess it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It%27s_a_Long_Way_to_the_Top_(If_You_Wanna_Rock_%27n%27_Roll)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Long Way to the Top<\/a>\u00a0and I&#8217;m predicting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-3-review.html\">Tesla Powerwall 3.0<\/a> will come with an integrated hybrid inverter that you simply plug the panel array into.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-sUXMzkh-jI<\/p>\n<h2>System\u00a0Efficiency<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0AC Powerwall 2 battery has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/glossary.html#roundtripefficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roundtrip efficiency<\/a>\u00a0of 89%. The DC version is 91.8%.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the most efficient configuration for overall system efficiency is to DC couple the DC Powerwall using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/hybrid-inverter-comparison\/\">hybrid inverter<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dc-coupled-dc-pw2-effy.jpg\" alt=\"dc coupled - dc powerwall\" width=\"659\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dc-coupled-dc-pw2-effy.jpg 659w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/dc-coupled-dc-pw2-effy-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If DC coupled\u00a0with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/glossary.html#multimodeinverter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hybrid\u00a0inverter<\/a> with an average efficiency of 96%, the overall efficiency from solar generated electricity to supplying battery power to the house would be 88.1% for the DC version.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If you use the AC version &#8211; you are looking at a total system efficiency of around 85.4%.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-ac-pw2-effy2.jpg\" alt=\"ac coupled ac powerwall 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-ac-pw2-effy2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-ac-pw2-effy2-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And if for some crazy reason you decide to AC couple a DC powerwall<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-1' id='enref-8485-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>1<\/a><\/sup> then you only get 84.6% system efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-dc-powerwall-effy.jpg\" alt=\"ac coupled dc powerwall\" width=\"649\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-dc-powerwall-effy.jpg 649w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ac-coupled-dc-powerwall-effy-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The AC version claims it can supply 13.2kWh of AC power. \u00a0This\u00a0means its built-in battery inverter would operate at an average efficiency of around 97.8% which is exceptional compared to a top-end battery inverter like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/sma-sunny-boy-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunny Boy Storage<\/a> which is 96.5% efficient.<\/p>\n<h2>Depth of Discharge<\/h2>\n<p>Tesla says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-2-review.html\">Powerwall 2 batteries<\/a> are 100% depth of discharge.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t actually believe this because completely discharging lithium-ion batteries is bad for them.\u00a0 I think the batteries are larger than 13.2kWh and when they reach what Tesla calls a 100% discharge they&#8217;re actually not completely flat.<\/p>\n<p>But I do approve of Tesla describing them this way, as it keeps usable capacity and nominal capacity of the batteries the same &#8211; eliminating confusion for consumers.<\/p>\n<h2>Adjustable Power Factor<\/h2>\n<p>The AC version will have adjustable &#8216;Power Factor&#8217;. This means that it should comply with the latest Australian inverter standards (many older model inverters don&#8217;t meet these latest standards and so can&#8217;t be installed any more).<\/p>\n<h2>The Powerwall 2.0 Warranty<\/h2>\n<p>This was the document I really wanted to see. But I&#8217;m happy to say that the Tesla Powerwall 2 warranty is much, much better. While there are still a few clauses that should not be in there &#8211; as they are clearly overridden by Australian Consumer Law &#8211; the warranty is generally clear, short, in Plain English and, apart from one point, unambiguous.<\/p>\n<p>I like to rank batteries by a factor called &#8216;cost per warranted kWh&#8217;. To calculate this, I look at how many kWhs of storage are actually warranted, then I divide the retail cost of the battery by that number. This gives me a cost to store each kWh of energy in the battery, as warranted by the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>Now you&#8217;d be bloody unlucky if your Tesla Powerwall 2 failed the day after the warranty expired &#8211; so your actual cost per kWh will be less. But as a relative comparison of the cost of storage &#8211; that the manufacturers will warrant &#8211; it is a really useful number.<\/p>\n<p>The really exciting thing about the Powerwall warranty details are that they show a cost per warranted kWh that is 25% lower than\u00a0its nearest competitor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/gcls-e-kwbe-battery-something-similar-will-change-world\/\">GCL E-KwBe<\/a>\u00a0according to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/#compare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freshly updated battery comparison table<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016-12-02_11-23-31.png\" alt=\"graph of cost per warranted kWh\" width=\"953\" height=\"702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016-12-02_11-23-31.png 953w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016-12-02_11-23-31-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2016-12-02_11-23-31-768x566.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 953px) 100vw, 953px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Calculating cost per warranted kWh<\/h2>\n<p>The Powerwall 2\u00a0has two\u00a0different warranty categories depending on how you use it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-2warranty-conditions.jpg\" alt=\"powerwall 2 warranty conditions\" width=\"535\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-2warranty-conditions.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-2warranty-conditions-300x72.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Category\u00a0#1:<\/strong> Tesla warrant the Powerwall 2 DC, for 10 years and unlimited cycles when used for &#8220;solar self consumption \/ backup&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They include a footnote that defines this as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;Storing solar energy generated by an onsite array, and using that stored solar energy (i) for daily self-consumption and\/or (ii) for use as backup power.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But this definition does not include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Charging the battery with off-peak electricity as\u00a0is often done with battery systems that are on-grid and is something that services such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/will-reposit-really-halve-the-payback-time-of-your-battery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reposit<\/a> do.<\/li>\n<li>Charging the batteries with a generator which is often done with systems that are used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/off-grid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">off-grid<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I am surprised that Tesla won&#8217;t allow these two common activities without the Powerwall 2 warranty falling into the second, worse category:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Category #2: <\/strong>\u00a0For all uses that do not fall into\u00a0category #1\u00a0Tesla warrant the Powerwall 2 DC, for 10 years or until it provides 37,800 kilowatt-hours of stored electricity (approx 3,200 cycles<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-2' id='enref-8485-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>2<\/a><\/sup> )<\/p>\n<p>Obviously category #1&#8217;s unlimited cycles are better, but in practice the two categories are much the same.<\/p>\n<p>The first category with unlimited cycles is impressive. In theory you could get an average of 2.6 cycles a day or potentially more, if you had a huge solar array and did nothing but charge and discharge it at full power all day every day. But only a complete loonie would do that.<\/p>\n<p>Realistically, even large users of electricity with 10 kilowatts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">solar panels<\/a> are likely to average below 0.85 cycles a day when limited to only charging off solar electricity as per category #1.<\/p>\n<p>And because the Powerwall 2&#8217;s capacity is so large and most people have smaller solar systems, the actual average will be considerably less.\u00a0 So realistically, Tesla &#8216;unlimited cycles&#8217; warranty will only\u00a0have to warrant up to around 3,100 cycles over 10 years, which is a little less than the approximate total number of cycles the second warranty category gives.<\/p>\n<h2>It Is An 8.8 Year Warranty When Cycled Once A Day<\/h2>\n<p>Because many people are going to want to charge their Tesla Powerwall 2 with off peak grid electricity, or use a service like Reposit, or charge it with a generator if off-grid, most people are likely to fall into the second warranty category and have a hard limit of 37,800kWh for their warranty. So what does this hard limit mean in practice?<\/p>\n<p>Generally, households are getting 0.8 to 1.2 cycles per day from their batteries in Australia<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-3' id='enref-8485-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>3<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0At 1 cycle per day, taking account of battery degradation<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-4' id='enref-8485-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>4<\/a><\/sup>, the\u00a0warranty will last for just under 9\u00a0years:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8520\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8520\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-warranty-graph.jpg\" alt=\"graph showing warranty limit\" width=\"720\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-warranty-graph.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pw2-warranty-graph-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When fully cycled, once per day, and used for solar shifting, peak tariff arbitrage and\/or Reposit, the warranty is just short of 9 years.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because the Powerwall 2&#8217;s storage is so large, most households won&#8217;t use it at this capacity and so its warranty will last for 10 years.\u00a0 But note that if you are using it at less than full capacity then the cost per stored kilowatt-hour increases.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a graph that shows how cycling your Powerwall 2 more or less than 1 cycle per day affects its warranty for &#8216;other uses&#8217;:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cycles-vs-warranty2.jpg\" alt=\"cycles vs. effective warranty\" width=\"882\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cycles-vs-warranty2.jpg 882w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cycles-vs-warranty2-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cycles-vs-warranty2-768x441.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Warranted Degradation \/ Energy Retention<\/h3>\n<p>All lithium-ion batteries degrade over time. Tesla warrant that the Powerwall 2 will still have at least 70% of its initial capacity after 10 years. That compares to 60% for the LG Chem RESUs and 80% for the Enphase AC batteries.<\/p>\n<p>The only ambiguity I can find in the warranty is that they don&#8217;t specify the rate of decline. If the battery drops to 70% on the second day of operation you would not be a happy camper. It would be nice to see Tesla warrant a linear degradation down to 70% at 10 years. Like this:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8492\" style=\"width: 692px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8492\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/powerwall2-dc-warranty.png\" alt=\"powerwall 2 warranty graph\" width=\"682\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/powerwall2-dc-warranty.png 682w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/powerwall2-dc-warranty-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#8217;ve assumed this linear decline in energy capacity for my calculations.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d be pretty happy if my home battery\u00a0still had almost 10kWh of storage left in 10 years time.<\/p>\n<h2>Warranted Cost Per kWh<\/h2>\n<p>At a retail cost of AUD$8,800 inc GST and 37,800 warranted kilowatt-hours of storage, that gives a cost per warranted kWh of 23.3 cents. This is 25% lower than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/gcls-e-kwbe-battery-something-similar-will-change-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GCL EKwBe<\/a>, 30% lower than\u00a0the little known\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepcyclesystems.com.au\/hybrid-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DCS PV5.0<\/a>, and 40%\u00a0lower per\u00a0warranted\u00a0kWh of Tesla&#8217;s\u00a0main rival, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/new-lg-chem-resu-batteries-smaller-powerful-cheaper-powerwall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LG Chem Resu 10.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to assume your Tesla Powerwall 2 will provide 50% more kilowatt-hours of storage than it is warranted for before it dies, then you are looking a cost per kWh of 15.5 cents.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty\u00a0compelling for large users of electricity with large solar systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>For early adopters\u00a0looking to buy a large battery storage system, then the Tesla Powerwall 2 looks to be unbeatable right now.<\/p>\n<p>I expect the competition, especially Enphase and LG to reduce their prices in response to Tesla&#8217;s challenge very soon<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-5' id='enref-8485-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>5<\/a><\/sup> which should make for an exciting 2017<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-2-warranty\/#en-8485-6' id='enref-8485-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8485)'>6<\/a><\/sup>.
