This project slipped under the radar, but is well worth mentioning – dozens of EV chargers were recently installed at the Children\u2019s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.<\/p>\n

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest paediatric centre in New South Wales, providing care and clinical services to approximately 90,000 children each year. Taking care of so many patients requires a big workforce – around 4,700 people working in 150 departments.<\/p>\n

A new multi-storey staff car park opened at the hospital recently, providing more than 1,000 parking spaces. Part of the NSW Government\u2019s $619 million investment into the hospital’s redevelopment, the project also involved installation of *75* EV chargers.<\/p>\n

The units are operating on the Chargefox software platform, which provides monitoring and management capabilities for hospital management.<\/p>\n

“Our platform will provide their staff with dependable and efficient charging solutions, encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and supporting the hospital’s sustainability goals,” said Chargefox CEO John Sullivan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Delta EV chargers<\/a> were used and while the model wasn’t mentioned, it looks to be the Delta AC Max. Also not mentioned is whether staff will be paying to use the chargers, but a PlugShare entry<\/a> indicates they are pay-for-play and states the number of spots will be increased from 75 to *200*.<\/p>\n

Solar-Assisted Charging<\/h2>\n

There’s also a solar power aspect to the car park project. Part of the redevelopment included a large PV installation on the structure’s fa\u00e7ade and rooftop. Nearly 1,400 solar panels were installed with a collective capacity of more than 700kW, which helps power car park operations as well as the hospital’s other energy needs.<\/p>\n

“This project sets a new standard for healthcare facilities, demonstrating how innovative infrastructure can support both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility,” says Chargefox<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Supporting Sustainability, Staff Convenience – And Security<\/h2>\n

I think this is a great project, but I’m a little biased. My partner is a nurse here in Adelaide and we have a BYD Atto 3<\/a> charged primarily by our 10kW solar system<\/a> via a Fronius Wattpilot<\/a>; although this winter we’ve been using grid electricity more often during the shoulder period when it’s cheaper.<\/p>\n

A couple of weeks back, on top of travel for the usual work day, my partner was called in to the hospital multiple times overnight. This was followed by travel for another normal shift – a total of around 270 kilometres over the 30 hours or so.<\/p>\n

In an on-call situation, there’s no time to be messing around with even the DC fast charger down the street, or fuelling up with petrol if we had an ICE car for that matter. Thankfully the car had enough charge, but something like Westmead’s setup would provide extra peace of mind – not just in terms of the Atto, but her personal security.<\/p>\n
