A lot has changed since then, and many of you have been asking for an update.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about buying battery-ready solar in 2024:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are more battery-ready brands at more price points.<\/li>\n<li>Three-phase backup is better catered for.<\/li>\n<li>Whole home backup is more feasible (not just essential circuits)<\/li>\n<li>If you choose the right battery\/inverter, you now have options for energy trading, not just sef-consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And most importantly&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Battery Payback Is Improving<\/h2>\n<p>For years we recommended adding more solar and hunting good retail electricity tariffs as a better way to save money than a home battery.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, if you were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>paying 24c per kWh for grid electricity<\/li>\n<li>and earning 16c per kWh with your Feed-In Tariff,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;the 8c per kWh you could save by storing your solar made a multi-decade battery payback common.<\/p>\n<p>However, now electricity prices have risen, and feed-in tariffs have dropped, the growing gulf between the value of electricity imports and exports has pushed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/payback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battery payback as low as six years<\/a> in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Batteries work best when charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/roof-orientation-solar-australia\/\">excess solar<\/a>. In 2016, Finn would tell you it was madness to buy a battery if your solar was not big enough to charge the battery all year long. But in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billhero.com.au\/partners\/solarquotes?utm_campaign=sq_news_weekly&amp;utm_content=230620%20weekly%20newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=getresponse\">with the right retail electricity deal<\/a>, people are putting big batteries on small solar systems and charging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/install-second-powerwall\/\">using electricity at 8 cents per kilowatt hour.<\/a> It&#8217;s great news for those with small or shaded roofs, but I&#8217;ve gotta add: nothing&#8217;s as reliable as sunrise.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Estimate Battery Savings Accurately<\/h2>\n<p>For a straightforward answer to battery payback in 2024, request<a href=\"https:\/\/support.solarquotes.com.au\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360001312176-How-to-access-your-smart-meter-data\"> NEM 12 data<\/a> from your distributor and upload it to our new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/calculator\/\">SolarQuotes battery calculator<\/a>. Provided you already have solar, and a retail smart meter, you can use this tool to\u00a0really flesh out the economics of a battery at your place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_85926\" style=\"width: 1196px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85926\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/battery-calculator.jpeg\" alt=\"battery calculator results\" width=\"1186\" height=\"1397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/battery-calculator.jpeg 1186w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/battery-calculator-255x300.jpeg 255w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/battery-calculator-869x1024.jpeg 869w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/battery-calculator-768x905.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1186px) 100vw, 1186px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-85926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our &#8216;add-a-battery&#8217; calculator uses your smart meter data to estimate real-world savings.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>All Solar Power Systems Are Battery Ready*<\/h2>\n<p>There are two ways to add a battery:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AC Coupling<\/li>\n<li>DC Coupling<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/battery-ready-2024\/#en-85493-1' id='enref-85493-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(85493)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AC Coupling Makes Every Home Battery Ready<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you choose the venerable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-2-review.html\">Tesla Powerwall 2<\/a> or any other AC-coupled battery, you can retrofit batteries to your existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/\">solar panels<\/a> no matter when they were installed or what inverter you have.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s so flexible, you can even add an AC-coupled battery to a house without solar.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you are buying solar now and want to add batteries later, rest easy\u2014AC coupling is always an option for you (but check with your solar installer about local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/grid-connection\/\">grid connection rules<\/a> on inverter sizing and that you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/battery-installation-locations\/\">suitable location to add a future battery<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But DC Coupling Has Many Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If AC coupling is so retrofittable, why bother with DC coupling, which requires installing a special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/hybrid-inverter-comparison\/\">hybrid inverter<\/a> that a battery can plug into later?<\/p>\n<p>Because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A battery installation will be quicker and cheaper if your installer plugs the battery into a properly installed hybrid inverter.<\/li>\n<li>The hardware for a DC-coupled system is usually slightly cheaper, with one inverter handling both the solar and battery.<\/li>\n<li>If you have three phases, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/3-phase-battery-backup\/\">three-phase hybrid inverter<\/a> is the best value way to back up your whole house.<\/li>\n<li>DC coupling allows you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/6-6kw-solar-barrier-add-battery\/\">put more solar panels on your roof than you would otherwise be allowed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/goodwe-review.html\">GoodWe<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/fronius-review.html\">Fronius<\/a> offer hybrid inverters for the same price as a standard solar inverter. You only pay $600-$1000 to upgrade the inverter&#8217;s software when you&#8217;re ready to add the battery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But hybrid inverters aren&#8217;t all sunshine and lollipops&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Plan For Obsolescence<\/h2>\n<p>The solar industry moves fast.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;battery-ready&#8221; system with a hybrid inverter bought eight years ago could easily be obsolete now, which means there are no compatible batteries available. Many battery brands simply move on to the next model, so it&#8217;s essential to budget to buy your battery within a couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>For example, BYD ceased producing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/byd-brings-b-box-battery-battleground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some models<\/a>\u00a0suitable for SMA, GoodWe, SolaX, and Victron inverters, which means<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/byd-legacy-products-discontinued\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> you can&#8217;t add or expand those batteries anymore<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/byd-legacy-products-discontinued\/\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And AC-coupled batteries aren&#8217;t immune: in 2016, Australia was the first market for the tiny 1.2kWh\/260watt output <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/enphase-batteries-are-impressive-but-very-unlikely-to-save-you-money\/\">Enphase AC Battery<\/a>. Being modular meant extra units could be installed. However, these days, any expansion will hinge on finding some second-hand units.<\/p>\n<h2>Off Grid Is Different<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to go off-grid when you finally add a battery, different rules apply.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas on-grid inverters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/sungrow-review.html\">Sungrow<\/a> have abandoned low-voltage batteries in favour of high-voltage systems with higher efficiency and less copper, 48 volts is still king for off-grid, remote-area power. With building blocks based on a standard battery voltage, you&#8217;re not tied to a particular battery brand or model.<\/p>\n<p>Network permission for an off-grid inverter as a grid-connected hybrid will vary; however, where they excel is simple reliability and outright guts. However, these off-grid systems aren&#8217;t plug-and-play, so cheap chumps don&#8217;t know how to install them.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Staying On-Grid Enables Energy Trading<\/h2>\n<p>If you stay on-grid, it is now possible to export your battery energy to the grid, maximising your economic return.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla, AGL, Origin and others offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/vpp-comparison\/\">Virtual Power Plants<\/a>, meaning you can become a small part of a large generator on the National Electricity Market.
