Discover those that will, those that won&#8217;t and batteries we&#8217;re not sure about.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Purchasing a home battery that can charge from the grid is a good idea for a number of reasons. Among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you&#8217;re on a Time-of-Use (ToU) electricity plan, you can top up your battery with cheap off-peak electricity for use during the peak period when it&#8217;s much more expensive.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to participate in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/virtual-power-plants\/\"> Virtual Power Plant<\/a> (VPP) program, this functionality may be required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While most home batteries can charge from the grid, exceptions may occur when they are installed with certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/hybrid-inverter-comparison\/\"> hybrid inverters<\/a> with limited functionality or when a system with a built- in inverter is aimed at the US market where charging a battery from the grid was potentially not permitted in some locations.<\/p>\n<h2>Evaluating Solar Batteries For Grid-Charging Capabilities<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve described most of the batteries on SolarQuotes&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/comparison-table\/\">home battery comparison table<\/a> below in one of the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>YES<\/strong>\u00a0= The battery can charge from the grid in its most commonly used configuration.\u00a0 These batteries will either have their own built in inverter or their officially compatible inverters allow it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong> = The battery can charge from the grid when paired with a suitable compatible hybrid inverter.\u00a0 Because it\u2019s possible some compatible inverters may not allow charging from the grid, it\u2019s important to check if this feature is available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>YES, PROBABLY\u00a0<\/strong>= The battery can probably charge from the grid, but the information I\u2019ve found isn\u2019t definitive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NO\/UNKNOWN<\/strong> = The manufacturer provides no evidence in manuals or elsewhere that the battery can charge from the grid and there is no evidence for it from any other sources I\u2019ve found.\u00a0 If the battery is sold in the United States, then it may not be able to charge from the grid because the rules on it were apparently unclear in some regions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NO<\/strong>\u00a0= The manufacturer has stated the batteries either can\u2019t charge from the grid or can only do so at low power to avoid a low charge state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where possible, I\u2019ve provided links to supporting evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The batteries are not listed in alphabetical order but in the order they appear on our battery comparison table.\u00a0 So, if you want to follow along on that to get details of the different batteries, feel free.<\/p>\n<h3>Tesla Powerwall 3<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>. Tesla provides the same information for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_au\/support\/energy\/powerwall\/mobile-app\/time-based-control-user-guide\">time-based control<\/a>\u00a0and forecasting for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-3-review.html\">Powerwall 3<\/a> as for the Powerwall 2.<\/p>\n<h3>Tesla Powerwall 2<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_au\/support\/energy\/powerwall\/mobile-app\/time-based-control-user-guide\">time-based control<\/a>\u00a0and forecasting that enables it to charge from the grid when prices are low.<\/p>\n<h3>BYD Battery Box Premium HVM &amp; HVS<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=loxFQmogC24\">a video of how to set the time dependent battery control<\/a>\u00a0that will allow a battery to charge from the grid on the Fronius GEN24 Plus, which is a hybrid inverter often used with BYD batteries.<\/p>\n<h3>Energizer Homepower<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 However, going by their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energizersolar.com\/solar-storage\">website<\/a>, the Energizer Homepower is being replaced with the Energizer Powercase all-in-one system, as well as Energistack modular batteries that require a hybrid inverter.\u00a0 This Energizer Solar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energizersolar.com\/faqs\">FAQ page<\/a> gives information on how the Energizer Solar App or web portal can be used to set an Energizer Homepower or Powercase to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Enphase IQ Battery 5P<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Page 12 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enphase.com\/en-gb\/download\/enphase-energy-system-iq-battery-5p-owners-guide\">IQ Battery 5P Owner\u2019s Guide<\/a>\u00a0states,\u00a0 \u201cCharge battery from the grid is an additional feature that you can enable to charge your battery from the grid when the energy prices are low.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Eveready Energy Vault 5.1<\/h3>\n<p><strong>NO\/UNKNOWN<\/strong>.\u00a0 No indication of being able to charge from the grid is given in its manual or in other information I\u2019ve been able to find online.<\/p>\n<h3>GenZ 48V 3kWh<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Compatible with a variety of hybrid inverters including Selectronic, which is able to charge batteries from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Goodwe Lynx Home F G2 Series<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 It can charge from the grid when using mode 4, which is described on page 1 of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pl.goodwe.com\/Ftp\/EN\/Downloads\/User%20Manual\/GW_ET_User%20Manual-EN.pdf\">user manual<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, it can be installed with a Goodwe EH series hybrid inverter and on page 9 of the inverter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.goodwe.com\/Ftp\/EN\/Downloads\/User%20Manual\/GW_EH_User%20Manual-EN.pdf\">user manual<\/a>\u00a0it states it can be set to Economic mode, which allows the battery to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Growatt Ark 10.2L-A1<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Section 7.3.6 on page 43 of the Growatt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.growatt.com\/upload\/file\/MIN_2500-6000TL-XH_User_Manual_EN_202201.pdf\">MIN 5000TL-XH inverter installation and operation manual<\/a>\u00a0states it can allow a battery to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>iStore Smart Battery<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 The extremely similar Huawei Luna2000 battery could be set to charge from the grid and it\u2019s also possible with the iStore battery.\u00a0 Page 43 of the iStore Smart Battery\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/istore.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IS-BATT-User-Manual-Oct23.pdf\">user manual<\/a>\u00a0describes how the Time-of-Use mode allows it to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Jinko SunTank<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Jinko Solar JKS-3~6HLVS-ABI series hybrid inverter is compatible with the Jinko Sun Tank and on page 2 of its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jinkosolar.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/JKS-36HLVS-ABI-User-Manual-for-ESV.pdf\">user manual<\/a> states, \u201cJKS-3~6HLVS-ABI Series is used to store energy generated by the photovoltaic cell panels or energy from grid if it is allowed in the battery\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Then on page 40 it describes the Battery First mode that enables it to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>LG Chem RESU<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Provided a compatible hybrid inverter is used that allows it, the LG Chem RESU can be charged from the grid.\u00a0 For example, if a Goodwe BP series hybrid inverter is used, its GoSolar app can set it to charge from the grid, as stated on page 1 of the introduction in its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.goodwe.com\/Ftp\/EN\/Downloads\/User%20Manual\/GW_SBP_User%20Manual-EN.pdf\">user manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>LG Chem RESU Prime<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is LG Chem&#8217;s latest home battery and if the Sunny Boy Storage is used along with the Sunny Home Manager 2.0, then using <a href=\"https:\/\/manuals.sma.de\/HM-20\/en-US\/7415011979.html\">Time Period Control<\/a> can allow it to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>PowerPlus Energy LiFe Premium Series<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 These batteries can charge from the grid when paired with a suitable compatible hybrid inverter.\u00a0 For example, if used with a Selectronic SP Pro the batteries will charge from the grid when used with the \u201cCharging On\u201d setting, as described on page 57 of the Selectronic <a href=\"https:\/\/download.selectronic.com.au\/manuals\/OI0005_30%20SP%20LINK%20Manual.pdf\">SP Link Instruction Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Pylontech Force L2<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/pylontech\/docs\/_0325_5_\">Pylontech brochure<\/a> states their batteries, including the L2 series, can participate in VPPs.\u00a0 This indicates an ability to charge from the grid, but no details are given in their operation manuals. Pylontech also has a Force H3 battery.\u00a0 The boasts they make about its &#8220;dynamic control&#8221; only make sense if it can charge from the grid, but I can&#8217;t find a definite statement from Pylontech on whether it can or not.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Pylontech US2000B and US3000<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Provided they are paired with a suitable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.master-instruments.com.au\/files\/battery_information\/compatibility_list_of_pylontech_ess_and_inverters_ver_2_15_mi09_02_2023.pdf\">compatible hybrid inverter<\/a>, Pylontech 48V batteries can charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>SolaX Triple Power<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 The SolaX Triple Power is compatible with the SolaX X1-AC and X3-AC series of hybrid inverters.\u00a0 On page 43 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solaxpower.com\/uploads\/file\/x1-ac-user-manual-en.pdf\">X1-AC user manual<\/a> a &#8220;Forced Time Use&#8221; mode is described that will charge batteries from the grid.\u00a0 Also, here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ve71rzIeNgs\">a video<\/a>\u00a0of a German man who says the SolaX X3 hybrid inverter has a manual mode that can be used to set it to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Sungrow SBR HV<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Starting on page 84 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aus.sungrowpower.com\/upload\/file\/20210816\/SH3.0_3.6_4.0_5.0_6.0RS-UEN-Ver11-20210629.pdf\">Sungrow SH series hybrid inverter user manual<\/a>, it describes how &#8220;Battery Forced Charge Time&#8221; can be used to charge the battery from the grid.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/info-support.sungrowpower.com\/application\/pdf\/2022\/09\/05\/SH5.0_6.0_8.0_10RT-UEN-Ver19-202207.pdf\">Sungrow SH series of hybrid inverter user manua<\/a>l describes the same, starting on page 102.<\/p>\n<h3>Zenaji Aeon<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES HYBRID<\/strong>.\u00a0 Zenaji say their batteries are compatible with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zenaji.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/A48-40-Inverter-Compatibility-List_V4.5_20221116.pdf\">range of hybrid inverters<\/a>\u00a0and these include models such as the Sungrow SH, which can charge batteries from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>SolarEdge Energy Bank<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 SolarEdge address this in question 5 under the heading \u201cGeneral\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marketing.solaredge.com\/home-battery-information-page-faqs\">on their FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Delta BX<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Delta BX Residential AC Storage System\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.delta-es.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Installation-Manual-20220225-BX6.3_AC100.pdf\">operation and installation manual<\/a> describes on page 43 a &#8220;Charge First Mode&#8221; that enables the battery to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Sonnenbatterie Evo &amp; Sonnenbatterie Eco<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sonnen batteries could be charged from the grid when part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/vpp-comparison\/\">Virtual Power Plant<\/a> (VPP), which no longer appears to be available.\u00a0 In their <a href=\"https:\/\/sonnen.com.au\/faq\/virtual-power-plant\/#list\">FAQ<\/a> on this, they say they can store energy from the grid as required.<\/p>\n<h3>AlphaESS SMILE5<\/h3>\n<p><strong> YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 The AlphaESS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/solarbatterygroup.com.au\/documents\/UserManuals\/UserManual_EN_SMILE5_10.1.pdf\">user manual<\/a> says it has a Grid Charge mode and on page 18 says, \u201cGrid Charge interface displays today\u2019s or total electricity quantity battery charging from the grid.\u201d\u00a0 Additionally, Amber Electric says AlphaESS systems with a serial number that begins with \u201cAL\u201d (but not \u201cALP\u201d) can be used with their <a href=\"https:\/\/help.amber.com.au\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/10015835768845-Which-batteries-are-compatible-with-SmartShift\">Smartshift<\/a>\u00a0technology that can charge and discharge batteries as required.<\/p>\n<h3>Eguana Evolve<\/h3>\n<p><strong>NO<\/strong>.\u00a0 At 46 minutes and 15 seconds into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ej7xmFza9-c\">this Eguana Evolve Home Battery System Technical Webinar video<\/a> the Eguana representative says that while it will perform a low power charge from the grid to recover from a low charge situation if solar energy isn\u2019t available for an extended time, the battery cannot otherwise charge from the grid.\u00a0 Its controller does not allow it because it\u2019s not permitted in some locations.<\/p>\n<h3>Fimer React<\/h3>\n<p><strong>NO\/UNKNOWN<\/strong>.\u00a0 No mention of charging from the grid is made in the product manual of the Fimer React 2 home battery, and on page 105 of the Fimer DM series hybrid inverter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fimer.com\/sites\/default\/files\/FIMER-UNO-DM-1.2_2.0_3.0_3.3_4.0_4.6_5.0-TL-PLUS-Q-Product%20manual%20EN-Rev_C_%28M000048CG%29.pdf\">product manual<\/a>\u00a0only modes of functioning that do not involve charging the battery from the grid are listed.<\/p>\n<h3>Redearth Sunrise<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Redearth batteries are capable of charging from the grid.\u00a0 If you are willing to pay $5 a month you can join their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/redearth.energy\/private-power-plant\/\">Private Power Plant<\/a>\u201d and buy and sell electricity from the grid at wholesale prices.<\/p>\n<h3>Sofar PowerAll<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Starting on page 75 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sofarsolar.com\/upload\/file\/20240205\/1707119107688092949.pdf\">Sofar Powerall User Manual<\/a> it describes its &#8220;time-of-use mode&#8221; that allows it to charge from the grid.<\/p>\n<h3>Soltaro AIO2<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 Soltaro batteries can be charged from the grid and the company provides some information\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soltaro.com\/soltaro-batteries-news-archives\/can-you-charge-a-battery-from-the-grid\">on this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>SunPower Reserve<\/h3>\n<p><strong>NO<\/strong>.\u00a0 The operating modes described at 2 minutes and 10 seconds into this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=14mSsiSp82k\">video on the SunPower One app<\/a> do not cover charging from the grid.\u00a0 It appears it cannot do this because it was potentially illegal in California and some other locations.<\/p>\n<h3>Varta Pulse 6<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.varta-ag.com\/fileadmin\/varta\/consumer\/downloads\/energy-storage\/varta-pulse-neo\/en\/Datasheet_pulse_neo_DACH_EN_007.pdf\">Varta Pulse neo 6 datasheet<\/a>\u00a0states it can grid charge.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.varta-ag.com\/au\/about-varta\/news-press\/details\/varta-energy-manager-take-control-and-save-money-by-reducing-your-peak-energy-with-the-new-grid-charging-option-for-varta-pulse\">This Varta page<\/a>\u00a0also says Varta home batteries can charge from the grid, but note the page is dated 2019.<\/p>\n<h3>Bluetti EP760 9.9<\/h3>\n<p><strong>YES<\/strong>.\u00a0 On page 68 of the Bluetti 760 Hybrid Inverter <a href=\"https:\/\/s4.bluettipower.com\/bluetti\/support\/User_manual_for_EP760-0416.pdf\/1726109790242310c.pdf\">User Manual V2.0<\/a>, it describes how to activate a &#8220;Charge From Grid&#8221; mode.<\/p>\n<h3>LAVO Storage S2<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0YES, PROBABLY<\/strong>.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/id\/urn:aaid:sc:ap:48234a05-7cd1-4787-aa79-0748e85e0a88\">LAVO Storage S2 datasheet<\/a>\u00a0says it has load shifting modes.\u00a0 But apart from that, LAVO gives no other specific information.\u00a0 Despite this lack of information, it appears likely to be able to grid charge.\u00a0 It would be odd for an Australian assembled system not to have this feature, as charging a battery from the grid is permitted here.<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it.
