{"id":88561,"date":"2024-12-26T05:29:45","date_gmt":"2024-12-25T19:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=88561"},"modified":"2024-12-26T05:29:45","modified_gmt":"2024-12-25T19:59:45","slug":"solar-xmas-australia-mb3081","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-xmas-australia-mb3081\/","title":{"rendered":"A Very Solar Xmas Day In Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-xmas-australia.jpg\" alt=\"Rooftop solar in Australia - Xmas day\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-xmas-australia.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-xmas-australia-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-xmas-australia-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-xmas-australia-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rooftop solar panels across Australia did their bit to support festivities yesterday with clean energy, and made a significant contribution to meeting overall mains grid electricity demand.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Solar power systems were not only producing electricity and considerable bill savings for their owners, but also exporting energy for use by others &#8211; putting downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at last year via <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.openelectricity.org.au\/energy\/nem\/\">OpenElectricity<\/a> (previously known as OpenNEM), December 25, 2023 saw rooftop solar contribution&#8217;s to NEM<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-xmas-australia-mb3081\/#en-88561-1' id='enref-88561-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(88561)'>1<\/a><\/sup> demand at 13.2% and in Western Australia&#8217;s SWIS<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-xmas-australia-mb3081\/#en-88561-2' id='enref-88561-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(88561)'>2<\/a><\/sup>;\u00a0 22.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Rooftop solar played a bigger role in the NEM on Xmas Day 2024, meeting 22.9% of overall demand yesterday. Between 10am and 2pm, its share consistently reached more than 50%.\u00a0 Thanks to solar power, other renewables and the nature of the day, NEM wholesale electricity prices averaged negative consistently between the hours of 6.30am and 4.30pm, with the lowest average price being -$38.44 per megawatt-hour at 12.30pm. The highest average price was $147.94 at 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>As for Western Australia &#8211; unfortunately OpenElectricity was having a moment, so I wasn&#8217;t able to determine yesterday&#8217;s figures; and the application doesn&#8217;t cover the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<h2>Solar&#8217;s NEM Contribution On Xmas Day 2024 By State<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the numbers looked in most states for December 25, 2024 in contributions to electricity demand &#8211; these figures are for rooftop PV only (utility-scale not included):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Queensland: 20.2% of overall demand for the full day, reaching as high as 46.9% at 12pm.<\/li>\n<li>NSW (ACT): 23.9%, 55.2% at 12.30pm.<\/li>\n<li>Victoria: 24.1%, 60.3% at 1pm.<\/li>\n<li>Tasmania: 7.2%, 20.7% at 1pm.<\/li>\n<li>South Australia: 33.6%, 75.6% at 1pm &#8211; the leader of the pack on both counts, and by quite a margin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-demand-nem.png\" alt=\"Rooftop solar's contribution to electricity demand Xmas day 2024 - NEM regions\" width=\"896\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-demand-nem.png 896w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-demand-nem-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/solar-demand-nem-768x487.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Another Solid Year For Rooftop PV<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cer.gov.au\/markets\/reports-and-data\/small-scale-installation-postcode-data\">According to figures<\/a> from the Clean Energy Regulator, close to 4 million solar power systems have been installed across Australia to date since 2001, with the majority of systems installed in the last 7 years.
