But I think, for most of the world&#8217;s population, it has actually been a pretty good year. An <em>annus prettigoodis<\/em> if you will.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I can understand why some people are down on 2016. But rather than taking a fabulous, shimmering, flying saucer, it was via cancer. If you have a choice, I really recommend taking the flying saucer. Trust me, you&#8217;ll get probed more in a cancer ward.<\/p>\n<p>But apart from these few deaths, and 60 million other people without wikipedia<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2016-good-news-co2-emissions-level-off-cost-solar-falls\/#en-8858-3' id='enref-8858-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8858)'>3<\/a><\/sup> pages who also died<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2016-good-news-co2-emissions-level-off-cost-solar-falls\/#en-8858-4' id='enref-8858-4' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8858)'>4<\/a><\/sup>, the world has been doing pretty well lately.<\/p>\n<h2>Random Reasons Why The World Is Doing Well<\/h2>\n<p>There are some specific reasons I will go into on why the world is doing well, but before I do, I want to get this grab bag of goodies out of the way&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Absolute Poverty Is Down!<\/h2>\n<p>The number of people in the world living in absolute poverty on less than $1.90 US a day declined from <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/world-poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">44% in 1990 to under 10%<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<h2>Malaria Deaths Are Down 60% This Century!<\/h2>\n<p>Between 2000 and 2015 malaria incidence declined 37% and deaths from malaria <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/malaria\/media\/world-malaria-report-2015\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell 60%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Life Expectancy Is Up!<\/h2>\n<p>World life expectancy has <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/life-expectancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased<\/a> from 48 in 1950 to around 71 today.<\/p>\n<h2>World Population Growth Is Down!<\/h2>\n<p>At around 1.1% a year, world population growth is now half its peak in 1968.\u00a0 Average fertility is now around <a href=\"http:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.4 children<\/a> per women.\u00a0 Estimates of what the world&#8217;s peak population will be, barring massive disaster, vary by a hell of a lot.\u00a0 But high predictions generally rely on birth rates increasing in richer countries and because I don&#8217;t see that happening, I expect world population growth to have slowed to a crawl by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if the immortality pills I have been working on prove to be a success that could change things, but they will take a very long time to test.<\/p>\n<h2>World Violence Is Down!<\/h2>\n<p>The world is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/foreigners\/2014\/12\/the_world_is_not_falling_apart_the_trend_lines_reveal_an_increasingly_peaceful.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">becoming safer<\/a> with deaths from violence in the 21st century low compared to any similar length of time last century.\u00a0 As one example, in Australia, homicide rates fell from 8 per 100,000 in 1995 to <a href=\"http:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/VC.IHR.PSRC.P5?locations=AU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 per 100,000<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ozone Hole Is Healing!<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to a worldwide, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montreal_Protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coordinated effort<\/a> to limit the emissions of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chlorofluorocarbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chlorofluorocarbons<\/a> and a number of other chemicals, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ozone_layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ozone layer<\/a> is recovering from the rather large <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ozone_depletion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hole<\/a> we carelessly poked in it.\u00a0 By 2020 the ozone hole may be half restored and it could be completely gone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ozone-layer-protection\/current-state-ozone-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by 2050<\/a>.\u00a0 The unfortunate drawback of this is, while it only has a small effect compared to CO2, ozone is a greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n<p>But on the subject of greenhouse gas emissions, which are very important to get under control if we don&#8217;t want to cook our goose, I have some very good news&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Human CO2 Emissions Have Leveled Off<\/h2>\n<p>For the past three years anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, which are those caused by human activity, have either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uea.ac.uk\/about\/-\/low-growth-in-global-carbon-emissions-continues-for-third-successive-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been level<\/a> or extremely close to it.<\/p>\n<p>This is great news.\u00a0 Although we are still dumping a huge amount of CO2 into the atmosphere and continuing to rapidly increase its concentration, we are no longer increasing the rate at which we are destroying the climate. The climate we depend upon for our survival.<\/p>\n<p>We need to do a lot more than this, but the first rule of holes is, when you find yourself in one, stop smashing yourself in the face with the shovel.\u00a0 If you can manage to do that then the hole may not become a grave.\u00a0 It&#8217;s even possible to start filling in the hole instead of making things worse.<\/p>\n<p>So while we still have a very long way to go, this is a turning point.\u00a0 To quote a great statesman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now this is not the end.\u00a0 It is not even the beginning of the end.\u00a0 But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2016-good-news-co2-emissions-level-off-cost-solar-falls\/#en-8858-5' id='enref-8858-5' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8858)'>5<\/a><\/sup>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, actually he wasn&#8217;t that great a statesman.\u00a0 He was actually a pretty crappy one who couldn&#8217;t tell the difference between Turkish beaches and Turkish <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Landing_at_Anzac_Cove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cliffs<\/a>.\u00a0 But he did have some nice words.<\/p>\n<h2>Emissions Need To Be Cut And Fast<\/h2>\n<p>We desperately need to keep the increase in global temperatures to under two degrees Celsius.\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t then we won&#8217;t be able to look our grandchildren in the eye.\u00a0 This is because their heads will be under water.<\/p>\n<p>If we keep warming under 2 degrees then we have a fair chance of not breaking things such as agriculture, weather, oceans, coastlines, and icecap<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2016-good-news-co2-emissions-level-off-cost-solar-falls\/#en-8858-6' id='enref-8858-6' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8858)'>6<\/a><\/sup>.\u00a0 My understanding is these things are terribly important.<\/p>\n<p>This requires emissions be cut by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangeauthority.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Target-Progress-Review\/Targets%20and%20Progress%20Review%20Final%20Report_Chapter%203.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 2.2%<\/a> of their current level each year until they&#8217;re about zero.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we can do this.<\/p>\n<p>There is a huge scope for improved energy efficiency, wind power continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-04-06\/wind-and-solar-are-crushing-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fall in cost<\/a>, electric cars are becoming competitive with internal combustion vehicles, and one very important point I will expand on &#8211; solar power is continuing to spread.<\/p>\n<h2>Word Solar Production Is Increasing<\/h2>\n<p>While we&#8217;ll have to wait for precise figures, around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-12-15\/world-energy-hits-a-turning-point-solar-that-s-cheaper-than-wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 gigawatts<\/a>, or close to it, of solar panels were installed around the world in 2016. \u00a0This is around a 25% increase on the amount produced last year.<\/p>\n<p>If they were all put in very sunny locations in Australia\u00a0 they could produce as much electricity as all the\u00a0coal power stations in Australia currently do<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/2016-good-news-co2-emissions-level-off-cost-solar-falls\/#en-8858-7' id='enref-8858-7' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(8858)'>7<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<h2>Solar Power Is Continuing To Fall In Price<\/h2>\n<p>We have already seen an impressive fall in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/panels\/cost\/\">solar panel prices<\/a> in 2016 and some analysts say we may see an <a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/new-solar-glut-could-push-solar-module-prices-as-low-as-30cwatt-54970\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional fall<\/a> of 13 or more cents.\u00a0 While the cost of a typical rooftop solar system will increase by around 4% with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/solar-rebate-ending\/\">slight reduction in STCs<\/a> that will occur at the end of the year, solar panel prices will only need to fall by about 6 cents a watt to offset this.\u00a0 Because the cost of inverters and other hardware will also fall it seems inevitable that rooftop solar will continue to decline in price for Australians.<\/p>\n<p>Enphase has promised to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/cheaper-microinverters-plan\/\">halve the cost<\/a> of their microinverters from what they were at the start of this year by the end of 2017, so it will be interesting to see if they can manage to do that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/Enphases-17M-Equity-Raise-Buys-Time-But-Pressures-Stock-Price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before running out of cash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Utility scale solar is also falling in price and has been bid in at around 4 cents a kilowatt-hour in Dubai and Chile.\u00a0 But because it competes with the retail price of electricity, Australian rooftop solar is already effectively cheaper than that.\u00a0 For most people who own a roof, an appropriately sized rooftop solar system is the lowest cost source of electricity available in Australia.<\/p>\n<h2>Solar&#8217;s Energy Payback Is One Year<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_8884\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8884\" class=\"wp-image-8884 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/abbott_shield-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"The Abbott Shield\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/abbott_shield-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/abbott_shield.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The &#8216;Abbott Shield&#8217; is ready to activate, Mr Turnbull.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The energy payback period of rooftop solar in Australia is roughly one year.\u00a0 This means it only takes about a year for a rooftop solar system to generate as much energy as it took to make.\u00a0 This will only get better as the technology improves.\u00a0 Unless of course, someone blots out the sun.<\/p>\n<h2>The Future Is Bright<\/h2>\n<p>The Australian Electricity Market Operator, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aemo.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEMO<\/a>, says rooftop solar will provide <a href=\"http:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/rooftop-solar-to-cut-total-grid-demand-to-zero-in-south-australia-32943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all electricity demand<\/a> in South Australia at times by 2023.\u00a0 Other states seem certain to follow &#8211;
