There’s a lot of conflicting claims out there about whether getting off gas is worth it financially. I’ve taken a deeper look at how much money Australian households could actually save by quitting gas, and the amount will make your head spin worse than a leaky stovetop.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are currently over 5 million Australian homes with gas connections.\u00a0 The number that would be financially better off if they stopped using gas is, by my calculations, over 5 million.<\/p>\n

There’s nowhere you won’t eventually be better off.\u00a0 Solar improves the savings and if you have a battery gas really makes no sense.\u00a0\u00a0 If you rent, it’s difficult to get off gas without landlord assistance, but so long as you’re not paying to upgrade your landlord’s property, you’ll also save money.<\/p>\n

I’m only going to discuss savings on energy bills.\u00a0 But if you care about your family’s health — or you’re a bastard and only care about your own — you’ll also want to get off gas because it’s a major health hazard<\/a> that would never be approved for home use if introduced today.<\/p>\n

The Four Ways Getting Off Gas Saves Cash<\/h2>\n

Having your gas permanently disconnected or abolished<\/a> saves money in 4 main ways:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. No more gas supply charges.<\/li>\n
  2. It’s normally cheaper to run appliances off electricity — especially reverse-cycle air conditioning and heat pump hot water.<\/li>\n
  3. Solar lowers the cost of electricity for households and batteries allow solar energy to be used at night.<\/li>\n
  4. No need to pay for regular safety checks of gas appliances.\u00a0 (The 3 or 4 Australians who do this will save heaps.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While you will need to pay for replacement electric appliances, for most households this investment will pay for itself within a time period that’s more than acceptable.<\/p>\n

    Total Savings From Getting Off Gas<\/h2>\n

    How much you’ll save from giving up gas depends on where you are, how many gas-burning appliances you have, and how much you use them.\u00a0 While I can’t give a precise figure, I can give an estimate of how much a 2 to 3 person household with moderate to low gas use will save by giving gas the boot.\u00a0 This is different from a home with average gas use which can have considerably higher savings, but I want to show that pretty much everyone is better off without gas.\u00a0 The kWh figures I’ve given below for each gassy capital are daily averages for end-use thermal energy, with colder locations using more energy for hot water and home heating.<\/p>\n

    Annual cost savings from electrifying home heating, hot water, and cooking are given first, followed by the supply charge and then the total for households that use gas for all three and give it all up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    This estimate makes Canberra the capital with the greatest financial benefit from going all-electric.\u00a0 This is partly due to cold winters resulting in high gas consumption.\u00a0 The next best place to give up gas is Adelaide.<\/p>\n

    The capital with the lowest financial benefit from going off gas is Perth.\u00a0 A solar household with modest gas use will only save around $305 a year, while a non-solar household will only save around $175.\u00a0 While not a huge saving, it can still enough to make going all electric worthwhile, and the savings are only likely to improve as the WA government has baked in gas price increases for the next 4 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Below, I’ll go into more detail about how I calculated the above figures, and in a future article I’ll explain how much less efficient gas appliances really are.<\/p>\n

    Supply Charges By Capital<\/h2>\n

    Supply charges are what you have to pay for a gas connection, regardless of how much gas you use — even if it’s none at all.\u00a0 To work out the annual cost of gas supply charges, I used the lowest-cost gas plan I could find with a quick search.\u00a0 While you may be able to find a cheaper plan, the figures I’ve used are likely to be around the best you can get.\u00a0 Annual gas supply charges are:<\/p>\n
