hot water in a way that&#8217;s environmentally benign and affordable.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>A New Type Of Hot Water<\/h2>\n<p>In the past, if you wanted scalding hot water for your home but didn&#8217;t want a scalding hot planet,\u00a0 your options were limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solar hot water;<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/hot-water\/heat-pump\/\">heat pump<\/a> or conventional electric hot water system powered by rooftop solar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But Peikkovoima offers a 3rd way that makes use of the high <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermal_decomposition\">decomposition heat<\/a> of specific minerals.\u00a0 This allows them to offer a system that can provide hot water for a prolonged period of time without any external energy source.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to make sense of the technical information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-au\/products\/bendon-dreamworks-trolls-troll-power-224-page-coloring-and-activity-book-with-over-30-stickers-video-game-9781505034035\">Peikkovoima site<\/a> but couldn&#8217;t understand a word of it.\u00a0 It may as well have been written in Finnish.\u00a0 In fact, I suspect it was.\u00a0 I did translate it, but it still made no sense.\u00a0 Luckily, I was able to go straight to the source and get information directly from Peikkovoima&#8217;s two founders and gain some interesting insights into the technology, the company, and &#8212; unfortunately &#8212; Finnish culture.<\/p>\n<h2>Peikkovoima &#8212; An Interview<\/h2>\n<p>I had the pleasure of interviewing Karvainen H\u00e4m\u00e4h\u00e4kki and Sikha Koria, the founders of Peikkovoima, at their product launch last night.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how it went, with a few &#8220;ums&#8221; and &#8220;ahs&#8221; edited out:<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOLARQUOTES (SQ):<\/strong>\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pleasure to meet you.\u00a0 To begin, could you give me some background information on your company?<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 Certainly.\u00a0 It would be a pleasure for me.\u00a0 Peikkovoima began a little over two years ago.\u00a0 As you may know, Finland is famous for its hot springs&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 Surely you have heard how we love our hot saunas in Finland?<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, but none of them are hot springs.\u00a0 Finland is primarily Paleoproterozoic and Archean craton with no geothermal activity for heating spring water.\u00a0 Also, Finland is famous for its almost complete lack of groundwater.\u00a0 I know because my mother&#8217;s PHD was on cratons and how boring they are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but the few hot springs we have are famous because they are so rare and because they are not formed from geothermal heat, but from geological decomposition of minerals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know about this.\u00a0 Please go on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 To go on would also be a pleasure.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loviisa\">Loviisa kuorma-auton sel\u00e4st\u00e4.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 He claimed a right to?\u00a0 Staked a claim to?\u00a0 My English is not so good.\u00a0 So, he approached me to discuss how this could be monetised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KORIA:<\/strong>\u00a0 First, we tried the hot springs business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but we decided this approach was not the best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KORIA:<\/strong>\u00a0 The filter kept getting clogged with hair.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 So then we settled on the hot water system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how does geological decomposition hot water work?<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 To tell you this would also pleasure me.\u00a0 As you may know, when certain chemical bonds break, they release heat energy.\u00a0 These minerals we are using are breaking into really very small pieces now and so release large amounts of heat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 So how much electrical power does it need?<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 It requires no external power.\u00a0 It provides all its own heat, guaranteed for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQ:<\/strong>\u00a0 But there&#8217;s a power cord coming out of that unit right exothermic reaction.\u00a0 What&#8217;s to stop it from getting out of control or exploding?<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00c4M\u00c4H\u00c4KKI:<\/strong>\u00a0 It cannot&#8230; interview there, but hopefully, Peikkovoima hot water systems, with their new geological decomposition technology, will soon be available for purchase and provide another environmentally friendly option for hot water.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, their arrival on the market may be delayed.\u00a0 I had to end the interview suddenly because a woman standing near us pulled a device from her pocket that emitted clicking noises.\u00a0 Then she announced she was from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansto.gov.au\/\">ANTSO<\/a> and that all the hot water systems were impounded.<\/p>\n<p>While this was an unfortunate start to Peikkovoima&#8217;s business in Australia, I was glad to see firsthand that Australian Customs is doing its part to protect us from ants.\u00a0 We already have too many invasive species here and we don&#8217;t need any from Finland.<\/p>\n<p>I even think I must have been stung, because I have a rash on my hand and face&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>If you&#8217;d like to install a
