Here&#8217;s what was facing the axe.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Coalition Cuts<\/h2>\n<p>In its release of costings on Thursday the Coalition announced it planned to axe a raft of programs related to home electrification and green energy. Programs set to be axed included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The $26 billion Future Made in Australia Program;<\/li>\n<li>The $19 billion Rewiring the Nation Program;<\/li>\n<li>The $16 billion National Reconstruction Fund;<\/li>\n<li>The Net Zero Economy Agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funding to Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water will also be cut substantially, while plans for additional funding for ARENA and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation will be curtailed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61637\" style=\"width: 783px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61637\" class=\" wp-image-61637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Level-2-home-charger.jpg\" alt=\"Zappi 2 home charger\" width=\"773\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Level-2-home-charger.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Level-2-home-charger-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Level-2-home-charger-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Level-2-home-charger-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 773px) 100vw, 773px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-61637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Coalition has pledged to get rid of the fringe benefit tax exemption for electric vehicles and EV charging equipment.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Electric Vehicle Tax Breaks<\/h2>\n<p>A key sticking point this election has been the fringe benefit tax on electric vehicles, which allows Australians to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/evs-leave-election-petrol-promises-in-the-dust-with-fbt-exemptions\/\">lease an eligible EV through their employer without paying FBT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opposition Leader Peter Dutton initially promised to protect this lucrative tax break for electric cars, but his party backflipped days later by declaring it would be scrapped;<\/li>\n<li>The Coalition instead is focusing on petrol vehicles, vowing to halve fuel excise for 12 months and abolish incoming fuel efficiency penalties;<\/li>\n<li>The EV fringe benefits tax exemption, which Labor has vowed to keep in place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/evs-leave-election-petrol-promises-in-the-dust-with-fbt-exemptions\/\">can also apply to EV home charger equipment;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Depending on your novated lease provider, you can salary-sacrifice the hardware and installation costs of a home EV charger and other charging accessories if they are offered in your lease package.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Gas Versus Electrification<\/h2>\n<p>The Coalition has proposed doubling down on gas to reduce energy prices with a plan that includes reserving gas for domestic use on Australia&#8217;s east coast.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0This is despite SolarQuotes analysis that finds almost every Australian household would save considerable amounts of money <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/like-money-get-off-gas\/\">by getting off gas<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Our in-house fact checker Ronald Brakels looked into claims made during the election that gas is efficient and vital to keeping Australian homes warm. Ronald found that in almost all cases alternative electric appliances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fact-check-actually-we-can-heat-homes-just-fine-without-efficient-gas\/\">are more efficient to run.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_91270\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91270\" class=\"wp-image-91270 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/mums-for-nuclear-paper.jpg\" alt=\"Mums for Nuclear ad -- &quot;Nuclear energy reduces energy costs by 25%&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/mums-for-nuclear-paper.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/mums-for-nuclear-paper-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-91270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A nuclear lobby group has been making misleading claims about nuclear energy &#8211; ignoring the cost to owners of rooftop solar.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Nuclear Impact on Solar<\/h2>\n<p>Another key energy policy proposed by the Coalition is a plan to roll out nuclear power stations in the coming decades.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our analysis found that claims nuclear would cut energy bills ignored the huge cost to owners of rooftop solar, whose systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/fact-check-no-mum-nuclear-wont-reduce-costs-by-25\/\">would need to be shut down regularly to keep always-on nuclear running<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>SolarQuotes founder Finn Peacock, who used to work in nuclear power in the UK, believes that nuclear power plants will simply never be built in Australia as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/phase-shift-nuclear\/\">there are too many obstacles in the way<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Labor&#8217;s Home Battery Rebate<\/h2>\n<p>Central to Labor&#8217;s election campaign is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/federal-rebate\/\"> $2.3bn Cheaper Home Batteries Program,<\/a> which the Coalition costings reveal would not be supported under a Dutton government.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This scheme would cover an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/labor-home-batteries-mb\/\">up-front discount on the purchase and installation of home batteries<\/a>, with a subsidy of around $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) useable capacity, before administrative fees and charges;<\/li>\n<li>If Labor wins the election, the official start date of this scheme is July 1, 2025, however solar batteries installed from now until then would also be eligible (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/new-battery-great-now-switch-it-off-until-july\/\">provided you don\u2019t turn them on<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>The discount is supposed to work alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/rebates\/\">existing state schemes<\/a>, which allows for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/double-dipping-labors-battery-incentive-big-savings-big-problems\/\">big savings through double-dipping<\/a> \u2014 but also some big potential problems, including a perverse incentive for people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/battery-cash-grid-crash\/\">quit the grid entirely<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For a home battery with a 10 kWh usable capacity, the incentive will be approximately $3,720 minus admin fees for an installation in 2025.
