While rooftop solar doesn&#8217;t require much in the way of maintenance, it&#8217;s important to have systems appropriately serviced to pick up on any problems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRooftop solar is constantly exposed to the elements and over time, components like wiring, switches and isolators can deteriorate,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysafe.vic.gov.au\/media-centre\/news\/campaign-urges-home-solar-owners-prioritise-safety\"> said<\/a> Energy Safe Victoria CEO Leanne Hughson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>&#8216;Make The Safe Call&#8217; Recommendations<\/h2>\n<p>Energy Safe and Solar Victoria have teamed up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysafe.vic.gov.au\/make-safe-call\">new campaign<\/a> to encourage solar owners to have their systems inspected on a regular basis. The campaign recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Booking a maintenance service at least once every 2 years. SolarQuotes currently recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/systems\/repairs-maintenance\/\">solar system servicing every five years<\/a>; assuming a quality installation. In South Australia, the ACT, and Victoria, Distributed Network Service Providers (DNSPs) *require* system inspections every five years.<\/li>\n<li>Using a licensed A Grade electrician.<\/li>\n<li>Obtaining a Certificate of Electrical Safety for any wiring repairs made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to engage a suitably qualified professional, and to sight their credentials.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUnqualified operators offering so-called \u2018maintenance\u2019 services are often just cleaning panels,&#8221; said Ms. Hughson. &#8220;They\u2019re not trained to identify and fix faults and might even cause damage or increase fire risks.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The campaign also urges solar households to be on the lookout for system changes or warning signs, such as burning smells or unusual noises.<\/p>\n<p>The original solar retailer can be a first port of to arrange an inspection. The cost of an inspection done right is currently in the range of $300 \u2013 $550.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Safe Victoria is the state&#8217;s energy safety regulator; responsible for electricity, gas and pipeline safety. Solar Victoria oversees the state&#8217;s Solar Homes program that offers \u2014 among other incentives \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/victorian-solar-rebate.html\">Victoria&#8217;s solar panel rebate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Solar Power System Fires In Victoria<\/h2>\n<p>According to Energy Safe, it has received reports of 138 solar-related house fires across the state in the past 3 years; many of which it says were preventable with regular maintenance. Given the number of installations in the state, it&#8217;s a tiny proportion, but still 138 fires too many.<\/p>\n<p>While a breakdown of the causes of these fires wasn&#8217;t provided, it wouldn&#8217;t be unreasonable to suggest a significant proportion involved faulty rooftop DC isolators.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-94770 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rooftop-dc-isolator.jpg\" alt=\"A rooftop DC isolator\" width=\"900\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rooftop-dc-isolator.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rooftop-dc-isolator-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rooftop-dc-isolator-768x474.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rooftop DC isolators *were* a mandatory requirement and meant to be an added fire safety mechanism, allowing solar panel arrays to be safely switched off by fire service personnel battling a blaze to minimise the risk of electrocution. An alternative option is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/disconnection-point-vs-dc-isolator\/\">disconnection point<\/a>, which appears to be the preferred choice among solar installers.<\/p>\n<p>Under the standard,\u00a0 isolators still installed must comply with requirements including a non-combustible mounting and weather
