What Should A Battery Installer Tell You Before Leaving?<\/h2>\n

You\u2019re the one living with this system \u2014 you deserve to know how it works.<\/p>\n

A proper handover includes:
\n– How to shut the system down safely (for emergency or maintenance);
\n– How to monitor performance;
\n– What different alerts or lights mean;
\n– What parts of your home are covered by the battery (especially alternative supply\/backup circuits);
\n– Who to contact for service, warranty, or technical issues.<\/a><\/p>\n

It shouldn\u2019t be overwhelming \u2014 but it should be thorough. No assumptions. No jargon. Just practical information.<\/p>\n

What If You Already Have Solar?<\/h2>\n

Many battery installs are add-ons to existing solar systems<\/a>, which present an additional set of handover requirements.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, I regularly attend inspections where the homeowner hasn\u2019t been told:
\n– What has changed;
\n– What has stayed the same;
\n– Whether their old solar gear is still compliant;
\n– How the new system actually interacts with what was already there.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not good enough.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re just adding a battery or overhauling the lot, you should understand:
\n– What was upgraded (and why);
\n– What has stayed in place;
\n– How your battery and solar systems now function together;
\n– And what to expect in terms of performance, monitoring, and shutdown procedures.<\/p>\n

If your installer can\u2019t explain that clearly, they might be in over their head.<\/p>\n

Backup \/ Alternative Supply Circuits: You Need to Know What\u2019s Covered<\/h2>\n

Circuits which are energised in a black out must be clearly labelled “Alternative Supply”.<\/p><\/div>\n

When I ask homeowners whether they have backup (or alternative supply) circuits, a very common response is: \u201cI\u2019m not sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a red flag.<\/p>\n

If your battery is configured to provide power during a blackout<\/a>, you need to know:
\n– Which circuits will stay powered;
\n– Where they\u2019re located;
\n– How to identify them during an outage.<\/p>\n

Commissioning: More Than Just Powering Up<\/h2>\n

Proper commissioning is critical. Unfortunately, it\u2019s one of the steps that\u2019s skipped most often. Make sure that:
\n– The battery is tested under load conditions;
\n– Battery and inverter communication is checked;
\n– Monitoring portals (app, desktop, or on-device screens) are activated and functional;
\n– Alternative supply circuits (commonly referred to as backup circuits) are verified, labelled, and tested;
\n– Parameters are configured \u2014 such as charge\/discharge limits, and whether the battery can be force-charged or force-discharged;
\n– The system is confirmed to operate safely in alternative supply mode (when the grid goes down).<\/p>\n

If these steps haven\u2019t been completed properly, your battery may not operate safely or as expected.<\/p>\n

Customer Handover: Not Just a USB and a Wave Goodbye<\/h2>\n

Whether your installation is inspected or not, your expectations as a customer should remain high.<\/p>\n

Your battery system should be:
\n– Compliant;
\n– Commissioned properly;
\n– Integrated safely with any existing solar;
\n– Clearly explained to you;
\n– Safe, clean, and ready for long-term use.<\/p>\n

If something seems off \u2014 or the installer rushes through the handover without explaining things properly \u2014 ask questions.<\/p>\n

And if an inspector turns up after the job\u2019s done? We\u2019re not here to make life hard. We\u2019re there to make sure everything\u2019s been done properly, so your system doesn\u2019t just look the part, but actually works the way it should.<\/p>\n
