The combined figure (79%) was slightly lower than for the same period last year (81%).<\/p>\n<p>Almost 80% believed their electricity or gas bills have jumped over the last 12 months. 16% experienced difficulties paying their electricity bill in the last 6 months, while 17% struggled to pay their gas bill.<\/p>\n<p>Only 54% said they can keep their home at a comfortable temperature on cool days without having to use a lot of energy, while 49% stated the same when it comes to hot days. It&#8217;s an issue that has a particularly big impact on renters, with more than two-thirds avoiding heating or cooling their homes to save money.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/energyconsumersaustralia_what-australians-now-expect-from-landlords-activity-7402183634717503488-TDwy\">ECA said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Without some sort of mandatory enforceable standards, renters are going to keep living in homes that are too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and very expensive to run &#8230; Energy efficiency is the foundation of a fair, liveable, affordable energy future. That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re calling for nationally consistent energy efficiency standards for rental properties.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Energy Retailer Relationships &#8211; What Consumers Want<\/h3>\n<p>With regard to engaging with Australia&#8217;s energy system:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>58% want a basic relationship with their retailer (+4% on Autumn 2025)<\/li>\n<li>42% want an active relationship (-4% on Autumn 2025)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A basic relationship is considered getting a good price for electricity consumed (or exported if you have solar panels through feed-in tariffs), a reliable electricity supply and good customer service. An active relationship involves a choice of different tariff structures, the ability to monitor energy use, and control over how distributed energy resources (DER) such as solar, batteries and electric vehicles store or export energy.<\/p>\n<h3>Reviewing Energy Plans<\/h3>\n<p>The December 2025 report indicates two thirds of households <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/energy\/\"> review their energy plan<\/a> at least once annually and around a quarter review it less than once a year. Close to one in ten households never review their household&#8217;s energy plan; one of the major reasons being it&#8217;s perceived to be &#8220;too hard&#8221; (32%).<\/p>\n<p>Energy retailer loyalty, for whatever reasons, can be very costly. Late last year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) estimated more than 80% of National Electricity Market (NEM) households <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/electricity-costs-accc-mb3084\/\"> are paying more for electricity than they need<\/a> to through not switching plans regularly.<\/p>\n<h3>Household Appliance And Technology Use<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/household-appliances-technologies.png\" alt=\"Household appliances and technologies graph\" width=\"896\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/household-appliances-technologies.png 896w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/household-appliances-technologies-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/household-appliances-technologies-768x496.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The survey found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>51% of respondent households have ceiling insulation.<\/li>\n<li>38% have a smart meter.<\/li>\n<li>33% installed solar panels (a further quarter were considering or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/solar101.html\"> researching installing a solar power system<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>29% had implemented draft-proofing.<\/li>\n<li>13% could monitor electricity use and costs in real time using an app or in-home display.<\/li>\n<li>13% had double- or triple-glazed windows.<\/li>\n<li>10% had floor insulation.<\/li>\n<li>9% implemented home automation.<\/li>\n<li>6% had installed a home battery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will be interesting to see what the home battery uptake growth is in a year from now given the very generous incentives under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/federal-rebate\/\">Federal Government&#8217;s Cheaper Home Batteries Program<\/a> that formally launched in July this year. Last year, the December 2024 ECA survey report indicated 4% of respondents had installed a battery.<\/p>\n<h3>Vehicles<\/h3>\n<p>Per household and on average, 1.7 vehicles were owned among respondents. Most of these are Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles; followed by hybrids (10%), fully electric (4%) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV: 3%) vehicles.<\/p>\n<h3>Home Gas Use<\/h3>\n<p>56% had piped gas at home, which was most common in Victoria, Western Australia, the ACT and South Australia. A further 9% have gas bottles delivered; which was more prevalent in Queensland and the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p>While mains electricity supply may be pricey, fueling a home with gas is even more so.
