Home battery sales are going through the roof. That means a growing number of homes now have both. Or soon will.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, hardly anyone thinks about how the two will work together.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->That is a shame. Because if you do not plan it, the default behaviour is simple:<\/p>\n<p>Whenever you charge your car, any charging power required above your instantaneous solar output will come from your home battery<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ev-will-eat-your-home-battery\/#en-97787-1' id='enref-97787-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(97787)'>1<\/a><\/sup>. Most charging is after sunset, and your car battery is much larger than your home battery, so your home battery simply empties into your car.<\/p>\n<p>Your house is left to buy from the grid overnight and some of what you save on petrol, you quietly lose on electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s walk through your choices when adding a home battery to an EV-driving home:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Option 1:<\/strong> <strong>Don&#8217;t discuss an EV charging strategy with the battery installer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Whenever you plug the EV in, your 7 kW single-phase charger kicks in. Or worse, your (up to) 22 kW three-phase charger.<\/p>\n<p>Your home battery sees a big load, says \u201crighto,\u201d and empties itself into the car. By supper time your battery is flat.<\/p>\n<p>This only makes sense if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have <strong>a very big battery<\/strong>. Think 40 kWh or more.<\/li>\n<li>It has enough <strong>power output<\/strong> in kilowatts to run the house and charge the car at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>Or you drive so little each day that you are only topping up a few kilowatt-hours from a trickle charger.<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ev-will-eat-your-home-battery\/#en-97787-2' id='enref-97787-2' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(97787)'>2<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Option 2:<\/strong> <strong>Ask the installer to wire the EV Charger upstream of the Battery<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is the boring, simple, rational option.<\/p>\n<p>You wire the EV charger so it sits<em> before<\/em> the battery in the switchboard.<\/p>\n<p>Result:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The EV can never charge from the home battery.<\/li>\n<li>It can only charge from the grid or live solar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For many households, this makes the most sense because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some retailers offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/agl-free-electricity-mb3238\/\">\u201c3 free hours\u201d of grid power<\/a> in the middle of the day.<\/li>\n<li>Some EV plans offer charging at 8 cents per kWh overnight.<\/li>\n<li>If grid power is cheap at the right times, or you only charge from solar, this option wins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Option 3: Get an EV Charger That Talks to Your Battery<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When your EV charger and battery inverter talk to each other you can choose whether to charge your car from the battery or the grid.<\/p>\n<p>In theory, all this requires is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/ev-chargers\/#features\">Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) compatible EV charger.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In reality OCPP between brands is a headache, so the practical answer today is usually to buy the same brand EV charger as your battery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Special Word for Tesla Owners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Tesla car<\/li>\n<li>A Tesla Powerwall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everything works beautifully. But there is a catch. Tesla controls charging by sending commands to the car, not the wall charger<sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/ev-will-eat-your-home-battery\/#en-97787-3' id='enref-97787-3' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(97787)'>3<\/a><\/sup>. So when you buy a non-Tesla EV later, all that clever integration disappears.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan to have a mixed-brand garage, you may want to think carefully before locking yourself fully into the Tesla ecosystem for both battery and family fleet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_94210\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94210\" class=\"wp-image-94210 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tesla-app-e1770962627792.jpg\" alt=\"An app screen showing battery data.\" width=\"600\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tesla-app-e1770962627792.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tesla-app-e1770962627792-289x300.jpg 289w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-94210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tesla EVs and home batteries play nicely with each other, but bringing a different brand of car into the mix can cause headaches.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>The Bigger Point<\/h2>\n<p>EVs and home batteries are both big purchases. Each makes sense on its own. But together, they are a system. If you do not design that system, it will design itself.
