Well yes, it is now, almost.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more-->Is Powerwall 3 Compatible With Powerwall 2?<\/h2>\n<p>With the appropriate firmware update drops, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-2-review.html\">Powerwall 2<\/a> owners will be able to upgrade using Tesla\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/reviews\/tesla-powerwall-3-review.html\">Powerwall 3<\/a> battery technology.<\/p>\n<p>Though I had some unofficial inkling from Tesla tech support in mid-February, I&#8217;m pleased to announce Tesla has made it official. A new PowerWall 3 will be able to talk to the Powerwall 2 if you already own one. If you\u2019ve been thinking about adding more capacity, this really changes the equation.<\/p>\n<p>So finally, they&#8217;ve done what they should have from the outset. This has been one of the biggest failures in product planning, only rivalled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/inverters\/fronius-review.html\">Fronius<\/a> releasing the Gen24 without them being able to talk to the dominant Snap-Inverter range. A problem I&#8217;m happy doesn&#8217;t exist anymore either.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll probably see fewer used PW2 appearing in the classified adverts, but it&#8217;s really going to annoy those who have already jumped ship and quit their Tesla battery in favour of something bigger, and probably cheaper.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98136\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98136\" class=\"wp-image-98136 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/used-pw2.jpg\" alt=\"used tesla Powerwalls\" width=\"850\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/used-pw2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/used-pw2-300x270.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/used-pw2-768x691.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-98136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Used PW2 seem to raise about $4000 on the secondhand market &#8211; sadly the PW1 and Fronius shown have too many zeroes to sell.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Tesla Are Turning Up At Trade Shows<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing what a bit of competition will do for a company that was previously a market leader and a bit insular or standoffish to go with it. Prices have fallen, incentive deals are announced and new features and products are coming.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla is celebrating the installation of a MILLION home batteries, so they&#8217;re offering the &#8220;Next Million Powerwalls&#8221; promo. Customers who order by March 31, 2026, (and install by September 30, 2026) will receive rebates up to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$750 for a Powerwall 3<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0$1,500 for a single Powerwall 3 with an Expansion Pack<\/li>\n<li>It could also be 2x Expansion packs for $1500<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is in addition to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program incentive of $3,650 for one PW3 or $5,450 for a PW3 + expansion pack.<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_au\/support\/energy\/powerwall\/order\/rebate\">Tesla support page<\/a> for more info.<\/p>\n<h3>What Are The Benefits?<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just about unlocking more storage, even though the standard Powerwall capacity of 13.5kWh turns out to be a pretty good default capacity for many households.<\/p>\n<p>Features include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stronger blackout protection<\/li>\n<li>better EV support<\/li>\n<li>potential to make more money with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/battery-storage\/virtual-power-plants\/\">Virtual Power Plant<\/a><\/li>\n<li>and greater solar savings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98134 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-pw2-pw3-combination.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-pw2-pw3-combination.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-pw2-pw3-combination-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-pw2-pw3-combination-768x564.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tesla insist you book in with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_au\/support\/energy\/powerwall\/learn\/backwards-compatibility#\">Tesla Certified Installer<\/a> to configure your new PW3 system and make sure it&#8217;s fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly there will be problems for those early adopters with gateway 1. Seems the only option here is to upgrade to Gateway 2. <sup class='endnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/finally-tesla-powerwall-3-is-talking-to-its-father\/#en-98132-1' id='enref-98132-1' onclick='return hhEndnotes_show(98132)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Those with a Nurio wireless metering device, commonly used to measure a solar inverter some distance from the main switchboard, will also encounter compatibility issues. However we&#8217;re told they can upgrade to Tesla Remote Meter to be compatible with Powerwall 3.<\/p>\n<h2>More Power Coming For Powerwall 3<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>After\u00a0doing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/powerwall-3-tesla-training\/\">product launch training day<\/a>, I know the PW3 can manage a 10kW load, but battery charging is restricted to 5kW. The Tesla people in Adelaide said &#8220;the battery is the bottleneck&#8221; when we asked, however we were given the impression that the expansion packs (yet to be released) would open up charging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Once they hit the market, expansion packs <i> didn&#8217;t<\/i> allow faster charging, however with the firmware 26.2 rolling out (to more than 10% of the fleet already) customers with DC expansion packs will see the increase applied.<\/p>\n<p>Charge rate is now upped to around 8kW (depending on the cell conditioning at the time).<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tesla have framed it as nearly 40% faster charging. Here is the summary of the <em>time reduced<\/em> for full charging:<\/div>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-98133 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-charging-power-table-1024x441.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-charging-power-table-1024x441.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-charging-power-table-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-charging-power-table-768x331.png 768w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tesla-charging-power-table.png 1035w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Three Phase PW3 Is Coming<\/h2>\n<p>Tesla hasn&#8217;t always delivered on it&#8217;s targets, let alone aspirations like 3 phase, so I collared the local Tesla rep after her presentation at the recent Smart Energy Council roadshow and asked pointedly which Xmas would PW3phase be delivered by?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This one!&#8221; she promised with a smile, but the latter half of the year was as specific as it got.<\/p>\n<p>My other Tesla sources pointed toward the PW3phase launched in Germany, but sadly the <a href=\"https:\/\/energylibrary.tesla.com\/docs\/Public\/EnergyStorage\/Powerwall\/3\/Datasheet\/de-de\/Powerwall-3-Datasheet-DE.pdf\">technokrauts<\/a> haven&#8217;t released the details yet. Unless there&#8217;s some queering brought about by Australian Standard 4777 or the Clean Energy Council accreditation, the unit delivered here won&#8217;t be much changed from the European one, aside of course from CSIP-AUS compliance. That has to be working straight out of the box, because world leading Australian networks need extra control.<\/p>\n<h2>The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same<\/h2>\n<p>For some years there have been people bleating from the cheap seats about SolarQuotes being biased, or bent by manufacturer kickbacks. Often because they want to include a particular brand or need help with a difficult roof perhaps. In an ironic twist, the first time SolarQuotes ever saw requests to <em>exclude<\/em> a brand, it was because Tesla&#8217;s CEO had incinerated his reputation. People couldn&#8217;t stand the smell of Musk.<\/p>\n<p>Still you have to give credit where it&#8217;s due, of the 8 AC coupled alternatives we listed in November 2022, Tesla is powering on while most are gone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eguana &#8211; LG battery recall problems, Australian offices closed<\/li>\n<li>Q.cells &#8211; withdrawn from Australia<\/li>\n<li>Redback &#8211; difficult to raise warranty claims on Pylontech batteries<\/li>\n<li>Sonnen &#8211; difficult to get warranty support.
