{"id":98768,"date":"2026-04-13T05:38:55","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T20:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/?p=98768"},"modified":"2026-04-13T06:54:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T21:24:52","slug":"australias-battery-boom-has-a-wiring-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/australias-battery-boom-has-a-wiring-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s Battery Boom Has a Wiring Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/battery-wiring-exposed.jpg\" alt=\"Battery wires left exposed\" width=\"1500\" height=\"783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/battery-wiring-exposed.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/battery-wiring-exposed-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/battery-wiring-exposed-1024x535.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/battery-wiring-exposed-768x401.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/>If you&#8217;ve got a high-voltage stackable battery system and the DC cables between the battery and inverter don&#8217;t have mechanical protection, you&#8217;re not compliant with Australian standards and your systems could be classed as unsafe &#8211; and shut down.<\/p>\n<p>This column explains why, and what the standard requires.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more-->A Quick Word On Voltage Categories<\/h2>\n<p>The &#8216;home battery standard&#8217; AS\/NZS 5139:2019 classifies DC voltages into three tiers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DVC-A (up to 60 V DC),<\/li>\n<li>DVC-B (60\u2013120 V DC), and<\/li>\n<li>DVC-C (above 120 V DC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every mainstream high-voltage stackable battery sold in Australia today operates well above DVC-C.<\/p>\n<h2>What The Standard Says<\/h2>\n<p>Clause 5.3.1.4.3 of AS\/NZS 5139:2019:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For battery systems operating at DVC-B or DVC-C, the cable between the overcurrent protection device and the PCE shall have mechanical protection.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The PCE is the inverter. In most modern HV stackable systems, the overcurrent protection device is built into the top (Master) battery module. So the protected run is from the battery stack&#8217;s DC output terminals to the inverter&#8217;s BAT input. For DVC-C systems, that entire run requires mechanical protection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98781\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98781\" class=\"wp-image-98781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox-ess.png\" alt=\"exposed dc battery cable example 1\" width=\"600\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox-ess.png 566w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox-ess-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-98781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unprotected battery cables from the battery to the inverter. Not even close to compliant.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>There Is No 300mm Allowance<\/h2>\n<p>Many installers apply a 300mm exposed cable allowance at the inverter end &#8211; a habit carried over from the solar panel installation standard AS\/NZS 5033, which does permit a short exposed section of solar DC cable at the inverter connection point.<\/p>\n<p>That allowance exists in AS5033. It does not exist in AS5139. Glen Morris &#8211; Standards Australia committee member and principal of Smart Energy Lab &#8211; confirmed this to me explicitly: there is no exception for mechanically unprotected DVC-B or DVC-C battery cables in AS\/NZS 5139, unlike the 300mm allowance in AS\/NZS 5033 for PV array cable at the inverter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98782\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98782\" class=\"wp-image-98782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox1.png 748w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/non-compliant-fox1-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-98782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not compliant &#8211; battery DC cable is visible. Unlike solar DC no exposed battery DC cable is allowed. Drop a tool across unprotected battery DC cables, or rub insulation against a sharp edge until conductors touch, and the available fault current is in the thousands of amps. The arc that forms is violent and sustained. It will keep going until the overcurrent device trips, and in the time between fault initiation and trip, enormous energy is released at the fault point.<\/p>\n<h2>What Protection Is Actually Required<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_98776\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98776\" class=\"wp-image-98776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/compliant-fox-ess.jpg\" alt=\"A compliant battery\" width=\"600\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/compliant-fox-ess.jpg 494w, https:\/\/www.solarquotes.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/compliant-fox-ess-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-98776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An example of battery cables with proper protection.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AS\/NZS 5139 references AS\/NZS 3000:2018 Clause H4 for mechanical protection requirements. For most domestic battery installations, WSX1 classification applies. AS\/NZS 3000 Clause H5.2 lists what satisfies WSX1:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Light or medium duty conduit (AS\/NZS 2053 or AS\/NZS 61386)<\/li>\n<li>PVC duct with clip-on covers<\/li>\n<li>Small sheet-metal ducts with clip-on covers<\/li>\n<li>A sheathed cable immediately adjacent to a projecting timber batten or masonry corner\u00b9<\/li>\n<li>The protection needs to cover the full run from the battery DC output to the inverter BAT input. There is no permitted exposed tail at either end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Enforcement Reality<\/h2>\n<p>This requirement has been mandatory across Australian jurisdictions since around 2021. Glen Morris (who helps write the standards) told me he comments on dozens of Facebook posts every week, pointing out non-compliant installations, and only about 10% of installers appear to be getting this right.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a systemic problem that makes home batteries less safe, and it&#8217;s about to become more costly. Clean Energy Regulator inspectors can and will shut down non-compliant systems.
