Michael's ActronAir Air Conditioners Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

From what we've been told, ActronAir split systems are rebadged Midea units (known as a budget brand), but apparently built to a higher specification. Actron ducted systems are made here in Australia and have a much better reputation.

Good output for a small unit in a small room. In summer it does a great job, but In winter when the outside unit fan goes the opposite way, it vibrates the wall and window which are thin and is noisy when compressor cuts in. Other than that it works good.
Installed in May 2004, still going strong almost 22 years later. Serviced every 12 months with a one hour visit from Licensed To Chill. A couple of parts replaced over the years but overall the service, repairs, maintenance cost has averaged well under $500 per year. It is one of the most significant contributors to our electricity consumption in winter and summer but probably no worse than most others. These days it is perhaps $2000 out of a $3000 annual bill. It has a three-phase connection.
We replaced a Daikin RZYQ7PY1 (rated 18kW) with the Actron Air Advance Ducted system15kW. The old Daikin system always drew at least 9kW. The new Actron Air draws max 4-5kw when it is cooling. It is separated into 8 zones, so it's possible to only cool one or two rooms if we want (very economical) and have different rooms at different temperatures. It is super silent and can be operated from your phone as well as from the controller on the wall. Innovate Air in Toowoomba were great to deal with - efficient and reliable.
Paid $16,100 inc GST for system + $1650 for extra sensors/on-wall controllers
Brilliant system. Australian made, and capable of reducing to very low power levels. The ducted system has a zone for each room with individual room controls. After heating or cooling it winds down to less than 2kW of power to maintain temperatures - this is a critical part of the Actron design that makes it extremely energy efficient. That's in a five bedroom, two storey, very large and poorly insulated old house.
