Michael's LG Air Conditioners Review & Verdict

LG is a consumer appliance goliath, but in my opinion haven't had a great track record over the last few years in Australia in terms of home electrification stuff. For example, they exited the solar panel market, and then wound up with a hot mess of a home battery recall.
But in terms of air-conditioners, it looks like the vibe is generally positive from Australian customers in terms of energy efficiency, quiet and rapid operation and smart features. However, customer service can reportedly be a bit of an issue at times.

About LG
The origins of Korea's LG go back to 1947 with Lucky Chemical (Lak Hui). The electronics division, GoldStar, was founded in 1958. Goldstar eventually became LG Electronics and led to the modern LG (Lucky-Goldstar) brand globally in 1995.
In terms of air-conditioners, LG started producing systems in 1968; Korea's first locally designed systems.

LG offers ducted, split and multi-split air conditioning solutions.
Split systems
The ranges are:
- High Efficiency: 3.5 kW - 9.4 kW capacities.
- DUALCOOL AI Air Standard: 2.5 kW - 7.1 kW capacities. Full control from temperature and airflow direction to humidity.
- Smart Series: 2.5kW- 6.3 kW capacities.
Some of the common features are the LG ThinQ app, Dul Vane, Proactive Energy Saving, 5-Step Cleaning, Plasmaster and Ionizer+, with the DUALCOOL and Smart Series also having extra bells and buzzers.
Ducted systems
LG offers a huge range of ducted systems: high static, mid static, slim and bulk head ducted; starting out in 5 kW capacities, then topping out at a whopping 20 kW.
The systems use a Twin Rotary Inverter Compressor with low vibration and low noise characteristics - 47 dB(a) in the case of a single compressor unit. The refrigerant used is R32 — (Difluoromethane).
Fine control can be achieved with the The LG ThinQ® App; so you can come home to comfort. (Optional Wi-Fi dongle module sold separately).

LG offers 5 years parts and labour warranty + additional 5 years parts only warranty on the compressor.

The LG units are several hundred dollars cheaper and do a good job at heating and cooling their respective rooms.
Reliability is a concern though - one unit broke down after 2 years of sporadic use. The problem was with the air diffuser. Repaired under warranty but didn't inspire confidence.
I'd happily buy another LG.
