Michael's Samsung Air Conditioners Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

While a very well-known brand here in Australia, Samsung air conditioners have received mixed reviews, with some customers praising their cooling efficiency and others reporting issues with performance, customer support and warranty claims. If you've got the bucks, brands such as Mitsubishi or Daikin may be a better bet.

Samsung Air Conditioning Solutions

Samsung offers wall mounted split, ducted split, cassette split and multi-head air conditioning systems in Australia.

Samsung Split Systems

Smart Geo: 2.5 kW - 7 kW capacities
Energy stars (average climate): Cooling:  4.5 stars, Heating:  3 stars
Indoor noise:  17 dB(A) -  38 dB(A)
Smart Airise: 2.5 kW - 7 kW capacities
Energy stars (average climate): not provided
Indoor noise:   17 dB(A) -  38 dB(A)
Smart Aero: 2.5 kW - 6.8 kW capacities
Energy stars (average climate): Cooling:  4.5 stars, Heating:  3 stars
Indoor noise:  17 dB(A) -  38 dB(A)

The Coefficient Of Performance rating for split systems ranges from 3.27 - 4.39. The outdoor units, which use R32 refrigerant, have a noise level of 45 dB(A).

Ducted Systems

Ducted systems are available in single and three-phase in 10 kW to 16 kW capacities. Indoor noise levels range from 32 dB(A) to 43 db(A).

They have an operating range of -15°C to 50°C outside air temperature for cooling and -20°C to 24°C for heating. However, as the outside temperature rises above 35°C, the cooling capacity will reduce and for heating, the capacity begins to reduce below 7°C.

All Samsung ducted systems are D.R.E.Ds (Demand Response Enabled Devices) with the option of DRM1, DRM2, and DRM3 levels. A Samsung Ducted AC can be connected to a WiFi network, but requires Wi-Fi kit MIM-H04AN; which is sold separately. The systems come with a colour LCD Display with backlight where you can set the current date and time, as well as scheduling and monitoring energy usage.

My system had a slow refrigerant leak that became evident after a few months from install (it wouldn't effectively cool). It took my installer a few attempts to diagnose including redoing all of their pipework before determining that it must be an internal fault. Samsung's repairer was able to very quickly find the leak inside of the in-ceiling unit by sticking his hand into a known spot a feeling for oil (tell tale of a leak) - he described it as a common fault from the factory.

The evaporator core within the in-ceiling unit (ducted system) needed to be replaced. Samsung will not cover the cost of removing the ceiling (or roof sheets if going the other way) to access the underside of the in-ceiling unit (warranty exclusion). I was left expected to pay $3,300 to their recommended tradesmen to remove and replace my ceiling as required to complete the repair. This is very poor form 1) for not properly leak testing their air cons at the factory, 2) for not paying the full cost of repairing their defects.

A side for this, the overall cooling performance of my 2x 9kW Samsung ducted units has been underwhelming even after repair.
The AC is performing well after just over 2 years of operation.

We have it installed to 6 individiual zones with 9 outlets.
Model AC100TNHPKG/SA, AC100TXAPKGSA

Installed as a 7 zone ducted system with Airtouch 5 controller and individual temperature sensors in each zone.

It is one of the most efficient system. I couldn't be happier with it.
