Michael's Magellan Power Batteries Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

The Magellan HESS from Perth firm Magellan Power was only produced for a handful of years, and there didn't appear to be much uptake before the company stopped producing it some years ago. However, the firm appears to have had another home battery system in the development pipeline for quite some time - the Karri.

Magellan Power Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Well-established Australian company
  • HESS is no longer produced (new battery available soon).

About Magellan Power

Magellan Power was founded in 1991 in Perth, Western Australia. In terms of battery systems, the company initially provided industrial lithium-ion batteries but then began producing systems for the home energy storage market.

Company Info

Magellan's founder, Masoud Abshar, is a power electronics design engineer. The first products produced by his company were SPC DC power systems.

In 2007, the company renamed from Magellan Powertronics to Magellan Power. Around 2009 the company entered the energy storage market. It's still producing battery systems today.

Magellan Power HESS

The company's flagship home battery was the all-in-one Magellan Home Energy Storage System (HESS); which was made (assembled) in Australia and launched in 2017 - but had been under development since 2013.

The Magellan HESS was available in 6.5kWh and 13kWh capacities, and had a 5kW inverter. The HESS's battery packs were supplied by LG Chem. In backup mode, it could output 4.6kW continuously, but could be overloaded 1.5 times for 10 seconds.

The Magellan HESS had dimensions of 1380mm x 755mm x 500mm and weighed 140 kg or 175 kg, depending on capacity. It could be installed indoors or outdoors and had passive cooling with fan assist. The HESS's ambient temperature range was - 20°C ~ 60°C, with derating occurring at over 45°C.

It's not clear when production of the HESS ceased - it was still available until at least late 2021.

Karri Home Battery System

Announced in May 2025, the all-in-one Karri home battery will offer capacities from 9.6 kWh to 25 kWh and inverter capacities from 5 kW to 15 kW.

Measuring 1400 millimetres high, 700 millimetres wide, and 600 millimetres deep, it has a marine-grade aluminium IP65-rated enclosure.

Magellan has paid special attention to safety features for this system, which boasts active cooling, fire suppression, gas and smoke detection, infrared thermal monitoring, mechanical shock sensors, an emergency shutdown button and remote safety monitoring.

As at late May 2025, pricing and availability, along with further details were yet to be announced.

Warranty Details

The HESS batteries came with a 10 year warranty so far as we can tell, and the Karri will also come with 10 years.

If yours HESS system is experiencing issues, try contacting your installer before Magellan, as the installer has the primary responsibility for warranty issues.
