Michael's Scame EV Chargers Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Scame EV chargers are made in Italy. Note that if you want smart solar charging and dynamic load balancing features, you'll need to also get the optional Scame Energy Meter, which adds (at the time of writing) an extra $150 to the cost.

Scame EV Chargers: Pros & Cons

Company Info

Scame Parre S.p.A is headquartered in Parre, which is located in the province of Bergamo in northern Italy. Established in 1963, Scame has evolved into a global enterprise, employing approximately 650 people across three facilities in Italy and operating through 18 branches and a network of distributors in over 80 countries worldwide, including Australia.

Scame Electrical Solutions Australia  is the sole distributor for Scame Group products in Australia, offering local support and warranty coverage.

Scame BE-W Home EV Chargers

Scame's first EV charger available in Australia was the BE-W Net, but that has been superseded by the BE-W[2.0].

Available in Lite, Business and Pro versions, the model best suited to residential use is the LITE.

The BEW-W Lite is available in single-phase (7kW) and three-phase (22kW) versions, with a tethered cable or without (socket model). The tethered version only has a 4-metre cable, which may not be long enough for some charging scenarios.

These chargers have three modes when Dynamic Power Management support is enabled, which requires installing an optional Scame energy meter (meaning it will cost you extra) :

  • Full - charge from mains grid.
  • Eco Smart - using power generated by rooftop solar panels, plus the minimum possible contribution from the grid.
  • Eco - totally dependent on solar input.

The charger has dimensions of 235 x 370 x 115mm, has an ingress protection rating of IP55 and a working temperature range of -30°C/+50°C.

These chargers come with the Scame E-Mobility local WiFi app, compatible with Android and iOS. The app provides features including:

  • User authentication.
  • Real time charging session monitoring and management.
  • Charging session reports and history.
  • Charging station status.
  • Adjusting operating mode.

It appears the BE-W Lite doesn't have OCPP 1.6 support.

Warranty Details

The warranty period  starts from the date of purchase of the BE-W and lasts for 4 years - which is quite generous for a home EV charger. The warranty can be extended for a further 12 months for an additional fee.
