Michael's Aotai Electric Inverters Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

One of the many Chinese brands that pursued Australian home solar market share in the early to mid-2010's, Aotai Electric still appears to be going strong today - but not in Australia.

About Aotai Electric

These days, China's Aotai Electric Co., LTD produces grid-connect inverters from 3kW through to 225kW. But years ago it offered units with capacities as little as 1.5kW.

Company Info

Aotai Electric was founded in 1993 by a team of professors and graduate students from Shandong University in China. The first products it manufactured were inverter MMA/TIG welders. Its solar inverter division was launched in 2011 with distribution into 40 countries soon after; including Australia.

Aotai Solar Inverters In Australia

Several models of Aotai inverters were included on the Clean Energy Council's approved inverter list in early 2012. These were from the ASP-XKHF series in capacities of 1.5kW, 2kW, 3kW and 4kW. The ASP-XKHF were transformer-based units (so rather large and hefty), whereas these days most solar inverters are transformerless.

It's not clear how long Aotai units were one the CEC's approved list for, but as at February 2025, there are none. This means none of the company's inverters are eligible for federal and state solar incentives, and it's unlikely permission will be granted by Australia's Distributed Network Service Providers (DNSPs) to connect them to the grid.

Warranty Information

A search on the word "warranty" on the Aotai Electric website showed zero results, and it's not clear what the warranty was when the company's inverters were available in Australia. But given the amount of time that has elapsed since they were CEC-listed and mentions elsewhere of current warranties being between 6 and 8 years; chances are any units still installed in Australia are no longer covered. If you want to pursue warranty issues, the best place to start is by contacting the party that installed your Aotai inverter, and failing that, the company's headquarters.

If your Aotai unit has failed, it's not worth getting it repaired outside of warranty - choose another inverter brand.
