Michael's Greenstar Inverters Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Greenstar was an Australian firm offering microinverters that came and went in the 2010's without much impact on the local home solar scene - except of course on those who bought the company's products before the firm went belly-up.

Greenstar Inverters: Pros & Cons

  • Company no longer exists.

About Greenstar

Australian company Greenstar Products (also spelled Green Star) once supplied microinverters, but their use seems to have been very limited locally - as was the company's lifespan.

Company Info

Even when the firm was operational, there wasn't much background information about it on the Greenstar website, which was active from 2012 to sometime in 2017. What we do know was the company was registered from August 2011 and was deregistered in May of 2018. Green Star Products went into liquidation in 2016.

The company's head office was listed as Lynbrook in Victoria.

Greenstar Microinverters

Greenstar wasn't a manufacturer, and which company produced their microinverters isn't clear; but they were made in China. The main microinverter products offered were the GS250 and the GS500.

The GS250 was a 250 Watt microinverter compatible with most 60-72 cell solar panels available at the time, and up to 22 units could be daisy-chained together per branch. The GS500 was essentially two GS250 microinverters in one housing, providing 500 Watts capacity. Up to 11 GS500 units could be daisy-chained per branch.

The microinverters communicated with the ECU-3 (Energy Communication Unit), the company's internet gateway device that transmitted data back to the Power Tracker monitoring website. Use of the ECU-3 wasn't required, but recommended for visibility, system performance historical data, and alerts.

Unfortunately, when the company ceased to exist, so too did customer access to monitoring and alerts via Power Tracker; rendering one of the big advantages of microinverters - panel level monitoring - moot.

Warranty Details

Greenstar microinverters were covered by a 25-year warranty; the details of which are unknown. But the 25-year guarantee means any that were installed are still covered by warranty. While the company no longer exists, there could be some recourse through the party that installed them - assuming they are still around. If they aren't, you're unfortunately out of luck.
