Michael's Green Energy Technology Panels Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Taiwan's Green Energy Technology Inc. produced thin film solar panels that were available in Australia for a while, but the firm didn't appear to sell many of its products here. Thin film for home solar has pretty much gone the way of the dodo (as has Green Energy Technology).

Green Energy Technology Panels: Pros & Cons

About Green Energy Technology

Green Energy Technology solar panels were once approved for use in Australia with grid-connect systems, but like the company, are no longer.

Company Info

Green Energy Technology Inc (GET) was a Taiwanese company that was founded in 2004. It's initial products included multi-crystalline silicon solar wafers, blocks and ingots, and later the company moved into panel production.

In June 2007, Green Energy Technology began developing and manufacturing G8.5 thin-film PV modules using amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology. These PV modules became available in December 2008 and the firm reached an annual thin-film capacity of 45 MW by the end of 2009. It also developed other solar panel products including BIPV modules.

It looks as though the company disappeared sometime in 2019. As to why, we have no idea - but focusing on thin film probably wasn't a good move given thin film panel size (huge) and efficiency (poor). Multicrystalline silicon also lost a lot of ground to monocrystalline during the latter half of the 2010's.

Green Energy Technology Solar Panels In Australia

GET panels available in Australia in the mid-2010's included the:

  • GET-170A-1 (170 W)
  • GET-180A-1 (180 W)
  • GET-340A-1 (340 W)
  • GET-360A-1 (360 W)

Being thin film, their conversion efficiencies were lower than conventional panels, so they were huge: up to 2.2m x 2.6m. Wrangling with these panels on a rooftop even in mild breeze would have been quite a task for installers.

Warranty Details

While Green Energy Technology offered a 20-year warranty on their solar panels, as the firm no longer exists it will be very difficult for Australian owners to make a claim. However, if the firm that installed them or importer is still about, they have warranty responsibility too, so that could be an avenue worth chasing.
